  • I dont think the dad need a health bar or it need to have an chance that the player can heal the health (but not cure it. That is what the cure is for), so they have more time to mine without worrying about the dad. The gems doesnt do anything for me. It is just there, but it doesnt do anything special. I am aware that they can be combined, but I dont see anything happened when I combined them.

Did you include your Game Design Document as a Google Drive link?

Play as the son of a coal miner who is now on his death bed. Your job is to find the cure to save your dad who has spent all those years in the mines!

Mine for coal to earn money, and use the gems you find to combine them into useful potions.

Don't spend too long in the mines or you might get spooked!

Extra Notes
Having a notepad handy might be useful at the crafting table. I hope it is not too frustrating. Given the different combinations, there is a 40% chance to obtain a potion. Good luck :)

I'm very glad I played this game! Going into the mines for a loved one is a very touching way to connect gameplay and story through a mechanic--really well done. In addition to that, it was also fun to figure out a good strategy and get rewarded for it (getting upgrades and eventually learning recipes feels great). I felt pretty frantic trying to figure out how to get the health potion, which honestly felt like another really good way to connect the player to the story. I also liked the art!

Here's some more feedback if y'all decide to continue this game:

  • My first attempt I died in the mine. I didn't actually understand that being in the mine was hurting me. I just didn't really realize it, maybe because it wasn't really giving me feedback. I guess as a general note, I didn't really immediately understand a good amount of the UI (eventually it makes sense though)
  • I thought I had to do something to deposit materials (also didn't realize you only deposit coal). I tried a handful of keys until eventually I realized it happens automatically because I had more cash than before.
  • When I first opened the store, I thought I was going to be able to buy the cure with gold, so I was a bit confused why the price was low. I just completely missed the icon next to it that told me it used gems for some reason. Might have just generally seemed unclear at a glance for me.
  • I thought at first the order of the gems might matter. In one of my playthroughs where I was still learning, I tried different orders in desperation to get some potions.  After I made my first potion I fortunately tested the same gems in a different order to realize it didn't matter after that point.
  • Minor visual bug: I think the scaling of the fear meter gets a little messed up as it goes down. It's super minor, just tripped me up a bit because I was trying to visually gauge whether the amount remaining was the amount that took me to get to that node. In a way it made me more paranoid as to how accurate it was, which I guess is a fitting experience to have haha!

Really great job! I think it's rare to see gameplay really fit a story like this, well done!

Very cute visuals and sounds, simple premise with a clever take on the theme, super fun gameplay loop, with a very generous lategame that speaks to the miner power fantasy in my soul? Yes please. This was a whole lot of fun! Rock and stone!

Thanks for playing! I really enjoyed the later game too once you figure out the potions haha. Love seeing the number go up!

Hey Merulon! Fancy seeing you here! I failed my first run for getting home too late, dad running on fumes, and me not knowing the correct combo for the health pot. Second run though, I rushed a strong income, picking up Boots > Pickaxe > Boots > Pickaxe upgrades as soon as I could afford them. Only using the first ore and running back and forth to refill my spook meter. Then I made a trip home, with plenty of time left on dad to experiment with gem combos. Launched notepad on the side and got cooking. Diamond + Sapphire + Emerald was the health pot I think? Healed dad to full, Went back to the grind, using the second ore pile this time, now that I had upgraded tools. Farmed pleeenty of gems, using some potions from the combo experiment earlier. Buying a mirror lets you see dad's healthbar at all times, if you're worried about how long to stay mining. Mining speed potion makes the numbers go brrr, I always combo'd this with luck potion to maximize the effect. And I used bravery potions when I had the other two buffs running. Once you get the pickaxe and boots upgraded, you can go crazy and mine forever, easily keeping dad alive and chugging potions like crazy.

Its really cute that you developed that together! :)

Regarding the game: At first I tried to leave the house to the left and wondered why nothing happened. Maybe add an arrow or a tree to make sure that the player does not try to go past the invisible wall.

Then I tried to mine but didnt get anything.... I did hold down the E-button. This may restart the mining process over and over so that I couldnt farm... When I finally noticed my mistake, the game started to make fun! But I still wondered why I lost stamina when just walking.

Grafics are retro-style and quite nice. Take a look at walking circles maybe since the head has to move up and down and does not stay on the same height.

You could polish the game more and I could see that it could become a really nice game. Maybe add minigames for mining and also let others playtest to gain feedback.

Keep on making games!!! :D I really like the concept and the game loop!

Thanks for playing! It was our first jam together. I agree with your sentiment. I think I could have implemented a better tutorial and guided the player more on what to do and where to go.

Its really addicting. Saving the father is a strong motivation! :D
But I cant finish somehow... Is there any way to heal a bit of the health of you father?

Finally get through the game. Got to admit that I didn't liked it as first, being very confused on what should be done and stuff like that, and died a few times because of it.  (For the first round I didn't even know there is a mine half way through, I guess I was just thinking this was steam world dig) But once figured out what is happening, I was then finally enjoying what the game has to offer. What I especially like is the urge to heal your father or he dies. It really force the player to do stuff rather than playing around.

Now to the nitpicks. I feels like the mining was a bit too simple, it would really adds a layer of complexity to the game to spice up it a bit. Say, multiple ores each giving different gems, ores that require potions to mine, so on and so on. Potion crafting is a interesting mechanic and I really enjoy how it's the actual important part of the game. I ends up needing something to write down the combinations so that I can use that effectly. Not that I am complaining but it would be better if there is some sort of recipe once you successful make a potion. You could probably then make that system way complicated than what it is now and still don't overwhelm the player.

Anyway, I think you did a good job, especially given that it's just 4 days for you. Well done!

That was fun! At first, I was under the impression the spook meter was going down too quickly, but after I played around with the items, I understood the loop pretty fast.

The art's cool and tells clearly what each thing is. It's endearing, in a way.

The sound effects are fitting and I really liked the music! The house one reminds me of music you'd hear in the 80s. The cave ambiance is also super good, really nails down the creepy and sinister factor!

Only thing I'd point out is that maybe it'd be nice to show the dad's health bar on the top of the screen at all times, considering that it's a game over condition and all. Though maybe the intention is to make the player visit their pa once in a while, which never hurts to do, ey?

The potion system was also key to being able to finish the game, so it's good that it was able to have relevancy! Sometimes, we can implement systems that end up not having as much of a spotlight, so it's good that you guys were able to avoid that.

This was really good and worked well. I had a lot fun seeing the numbers go up and emptying the shop. Good work, and keep making stuff!
