Jumping feels smooth and responsive, solid platformer, and while gameplay was smooth, i didn't feel a connection to the theme.

- Fun game, enjoyable egg jumping game, although struggle to see the alchemy part of the game! A very enjoyable vibe
- I couldn't stop laughing, doesn't fit the theme well but thank you. I was in tears.
- EGG. EGG CRIMINAL. I enjoyed my Egg Journey, Nice nether portal. Humor on point, horrifying finale, the theme could have been a bit more solid and i would have liked a few more animated objects, but thanks, i'm horrified.
- You are a menace. Thank you for existing and thank you for this eggciting game. The theme could have been implemented more directly but this does well for what it is. The jokey text lines and responses in the comments are top notch. This is a great little experience. Keep it up!

"Egg?" is a weird little 2D platformer / side scroller that takes you on an unexpected, transformative adventure. You jump around, collect your fellow eggs, avoid getting cracked, or getting eaten by Shadowsnakes as you delve deeper into the source of the darkness that is slowly enveloping the world.
Extra Notes
I am a technologically challenged old man. With 0 experience or knowledge about game development. I avoid things that I cannot instinctively grasp. This whole project was my declaration of war against my nature to run away from things I do not understand. From things that I am not good at. After countless hours of wrestling with the simplest of tasks for a real game developer, and failing to follow even the simplest tutorials, I remain NOT GOOD AT game development. But you know what? I went against my nature and finished what I set out to do. And for this opportunity, I am thankful to all of you who are participating in this, all of you who are out there making and playing these games. To anyone reading this. Thank you. Keep being awesome.

Keeping that in mind, I'll try to explain my thought process here
Alchemy often starts with a raw, basic state that undergoes a series of processes. Refinement, and purification. And in philosophical terms, enlightenment. Our player character Egg is a literal and metaphorical "prima materia". This raw state I mentioned. As our Egg moves through the world, dodging shadow snakes (A not-so-subtle nod at the Jungian concept of confronting one's shadow, the journey through darkness, reflecting the process of acknowledging and integrating these repressed, hidden aspects of the psyche) and delving deeper into the shadows, the world gradually gets darker. From the lush, flower filled grass lands to a barren desert, to a weird, corrupted purple zone, to complete abyss, devoid of any light (And is this not a definition of shadows and darkness? An absence of light?). The "voice" that keeps giving you pats on the back for being such a good egg, even directly points at this shift and asks "Is this the source of all this darkness?". This is a rather heavy handed (or so I thought) depiction "nigredo", or blackening, where one has to confront and integrate the shadowy, chaotic aspects. Crucial for eventual transformation and metamorphosis, reflecting the journey through dissolution to eventual purification. (SPOILERS) The final transformation into a sun represents both "albedo" (whitening) and rubedo (reddening), stages in alchemy where purification leads to illumination and completion. The GOLDEN sun, (again, rather heavy handed I thought) signifies achieving the philosopher's stone. Or the ultimate metamorphosis / enlightenment / purity. (SPOILERS) Light represents the ultimate goal of illumination and wisdom, achieved through a transformative process. Darkness represents ignorance, and challenges one must face to achieve this enlightenment. In mystical, philosophical and alchemical traditions, becoming sunlike / goldlike symbolizes the culmination of an alchemical journey.
But yeah, I get it. It was probably way too vague overall.
That's lovely and very well executed (eggzeguted, yeah)! I'm so very much NOT fond of platformers that normally I'd pass by without even peeking into, however all the hype around THE EGG made me curious, and I don't regret a single second spent on this game. Love the implementation of coyote time and all those helpful little tricks, and the "try it and you'll see" tutorials that make you explore the possibilities (special thanks for the double jump and the whole section encouraging players to discover the mechanic on their own!). There is also a great replayability potential, as I feel some rhytm-game vibes in the sequences of eggs that seem to be possible to collect in one move without stopping - a perfect example of easy to learn/hard to master. Hats off, this is an eggsterpiece!
A task akin to performing a grandiose, yet utterly one-sided theatrical production. Like a magician unveiling their most secret trick to an audience of one. Though your egg, in its aloof wisdom, may offer not a single clue of understanding, you must carry on undeterred, as though the egg’s stoic gaze is a silent nod of appreciation. 🥚
Very fun 10/10 no notes
Actually small note, I did think the rotating eggs were clouds for a good long time, lol. might be worth doing a slightly different model of those!
Swathed in a thin, yet steadfast casing, the egg lies in eldritch slumber, and when it cracks open, t̷̩̙̱̑h̵͈͚̼͑̑ḙ̷͓͝ ̷͍̋̓͘c̵̗͛͝o̸̻͐̑̿ṣ̴͂m̶̘̫͓̽͛̀o̶͈͈͂s̷͓̓͋͘ ̴̯̈i̷̗̇͒ṫ̶̘s̴̠̗̊͒e̸̝̍l̶̰̽͑f̶̪́̂ s̸͕͍͗͗ĥ̵̫̩̗̦͙͈̤̩̳͆̈̐̈́̀̒͠͝ͅä̸̤̙̟̥͙́̔͗ͅĺ̴̻͎̱̀̄̀͂͌l̴̢͙̯̺̯̎͊͐͛͆̐̀͑̐͒ ̴̨̺̼͚̲̠̗̤̓̃͒̏͛̉̎́͌t̸̻͎̩̣̣̝͓͎͙̅̅̀̓̍̊͌ͅȓ̵͓̳͉̤̮̤͕̓̎͆̈̐͝ĕ̵̳̑̌̋́ṁ̶͕͙͉̠͔͕̭̖͎͛̂͐ͅb̴̨̡̙̰͓̘͙̈́̓̀̂̉͝͠l̸̹̪̳̞̼͕͕̗̮̀̈́̐́̐ȩ̴͕̼̙̟̹̗̦̄̿̈́͑̑ i̷̺̓̀ͅn̶͙̅ ̵̼̦̓i̶̘͇̎͐t̶͚̉s̸̞̘̐̆ ̶̣̓̚w̵͕̿a̸͖̚k̷̦̓e̵̫̒
This game was a vibe. No marks. Only egg. Grats on striving and making game.
Charming with it's simplicity with nice funky BGM. Motivational messages made me chuckle here and there.
Congratulations on a release and (as I understand) personal victory!
The real question - which came first: An Egg or The Egg?
simple and fun, great music, and i loved the motivational messages along the way!
A simple game that I liked, short and fun.
I liked the animations of the egg, that is happy when it walks and jumps, the poker face stays still, and the ending was unexpected for me.
After reading the interpretation of the theme, I like the ending more.
One note, I feel the contrast of the text and the background at the end isn’t that good after the desert, I can read it well but just it’s a little thing to consider in the future :D
Oh, I like how the music is getting lower and lower the more you progress in the game and also liked the progression of the levels in the visual aspect.
I guess to end this I can say the classic, egg/10 haha
Thanks for sharing :)
EXPERIENCE THIS GAME FOR YOURSELF. READ THIS REVIEW AFTERWARDS.
ok so I've been thinking about this game over the past few days, and I think I've come to a conclusion.
egg? is an exercise in futility. it's also a story about learning a skill
you're told that the egg pickups across the map matter, but they don't. they do nothing, the final counter all the way to the right doesn't reflect them. you go out of your way to collect challenging eggs off the beaten path, all for nothing.
you're told that you're on a journey. but you're not. the whole game can be completed by simply pressing a button, only the button prompt is miles away.
the enemies; the pits, they're meaningless too. death costs nothing, it's barely an obstacle. by all rights, this game should be terrible.
but egg? made me feel something. I think the greatness of egg is not in its systems, but in how it's components sum together to make an experience that genuinely made me reflect.
what does egg? say?
well, one potential reading is that the true power is in knowledge; all of us could "hatch" at any point of our choosing, if only we knew how. but that knowledge comes through a tedious journey that, when viewed with hindsight, seems almost pointless. it comes through engaging in activities that ultimately do not bear fruit (collecting eggs). sure, you could hit U by accident, just as you *could* pump out a masterpiece game on your first try. but to attain consistently, you must first do *so* much menial, pointless work to acquire the relevant knowledge. only then could you hatch consistently; could you develop quality games consistently; could you truly master your skill.
to that end, the gameplay of egg? being bad actually serves it's theme very well. I don't want to replay egg? from scratch. and in the exact same way, I don't want to relearn game development from scratch either.
how much of this was intended? who gives a shit, LOL. the proof is in the pudding.
Verily, I say unto you, you have cracked the code and left me shell shocked. I really, really enjoy and appreciate your interpretation of this philosophical shitpost of a seemingly silly egg game. I knew that, making a mechanically satisfying game that is impressive on a technical level, was absolutely beyond my capability to create in two weeks with zero experience or skill. So I just set out to make a game, any game, my own "Fart Hotel", against my own desire to flee from this challenge. And I figured, I could turn my technical weaknesses into strengths. Like, It took me 3 straight days to figure out how to add those poorly implemented checkpoints. But if I could nudge the player, through the narrative, towards the possibility that this was all intentional? That, maybe could be powerful and provoke thought?
I spent over 15 years trying to get good at cooking. I collected many eggs along the way, only to come to the realization that, less is, in fact, more. That "mother nature is the true artist, and I am just the cook". That it's hard to top the delicious joy of a charred potato, baked in a literal ditch.
That, the pursuit of enlightenment can sometimes lead to a fixation on the goal, rather than the present moment. Of course, I'm not clever enough to have come up with this myself. It's funny you mentioned pudding, because this whole project made me think of the story of Sujata's rice pudding, a lot. The notion that, one's desire for enlightenment, itself being a paradoxical obstacle on the way to become enlightened, really resonates with me. The idea that sometimes, all we need in order to hatch, is to let go of the fixation and desire to collect all the eggs. That each one of us, already carries a golden sun within.
I am sorry this reply is all over the place, and lacks any structure. Just my stream of consciousness grasping at the straws, to figure out what the hell I even created, but more importantly, what it meant to people, and their interpretations of it all. I am very grateful you played it, and shared your lovely thoughts. It really means a lot to me. You're a golden egg, and a rockstar!
This was great! A game praising me as I go through the levels and collect things is something I didn't realise I wanted
This is my favorite video game. The only problem is I was playing this at work while my coworkers were trying to have a serious conversation with me, and now I'm in trouble.
I had fun with it, probably more than it's worth, not sure if that's a good or bad thing haha. I think simple janky games are funny. I liked finding the secret and all of the messages. Ending was great. Good job.
Alright, so, Egg. Egg? Egg. Quite the eggsquisite eggsperience. Let's egg about it. Time to egg.
First of all, I'm impressed you managed to make an egg stand out so much and make it have such an oddly unique design with a simple two eyes, legs and a smile. It turned out super characteristic, which I liked from the get go!
The shadowsnakes ended up reminding me of old NES and Master System games with the way they looked and moved, so the way they turned out looked nostalgic and very cool!
I saw that you left some of the older builds of the game as public from when you were testing things out, and it gives a really cool perspective into seeing the growth and changes of this egg's yolk. The humble beginnings of an egg who couldn't yet double jump and of a camera who felt a bit floaty. An egg that was still raw.
Then, eggtest3 surprises you with a longer level design that was still in construction, huge groups of Shadow Snakes roaming around, platforms glued on top of one another.
And yet, the final version of Egg resembles a well balanced soufflé: looking super nice and well put together. Simple, giving space to only what's necessary. The music choice from the prototypes really encapsulated the experience of just starting out on game dev, trying things out, using those classic royalty free bangers, and it was a nice trip into memory lane for me, oddly enough.
However, much like choosing the proper seasoning for an egg salad, the music choice for the version 1.0 was perfect!
I like the fact that you implemented a double jump, which aligns perfectly with your intentions of making something more accessible and easy, like a fried egg. The camera is a lot sharper, doesn't float and feels a lot nicer. The sound effects are satisfying, too! The tiny floating eggs in the background are also a very nice touch.
The way the commentator says "Well done Big Boy" is also quite eggspertly put together, much like a poached egg. The way the b's are capitalized further emphasizes the "Bigness" factor of this "Boy" (me)
One of my favorite parts of the game was definitely the wacky humor and commentary. It's right up my alley and gave the game an incredible amount of personality! It was the perfect seasoning for the game.
I also like the fact that finding redacted doesn't only give you redacted, but lets you speedrun the game's ending. It's funny.
Speaking of the end, the effort for the ending cutscene can't be understated and I felt the impact the cutscene had. The fact that the music slightly goes up in volume and that the animation keeps looping helped make it creepier in a way. The sort of creepy you feel when you fry an egg and the pan's too hot and the egg starts to swell and it feels like the egg will explode on your face! Quite creepy.
You started out with something so simple, and look where you got to.
You can now officially say: I made a game!
And it's a good game. Eggscelent even, one could say. I really enjoyed it!
Call me shell shocked. Wow. What have you done? This review deserves a review of itself. You have discovered the secrets and history of egg at an unfathomable level. Even going through the trouble of playing forsaken test builds? Reading design documents? But even seeing the heart and soul I poured into a game that might seem like philosophical shitposting on the surface. Heck, even uncovering redacted lore. What a gentleman, scholar and a historian. You sir, have the soul of a true eggsplorer. The Rockstar that was promised! Thank you for playing!
What was that?!
In all seriousness though, nice little meta game. Really enjoyed it. The only thing that spoiled it is that the dialogue is getting a bit too positive to a point where its sort of giving away what comes to the ending. But I still fall for it so I guess it's fine.
Anyway, nice game!
