  • they still love me was an interesting, albeit very painful story to play through in its present form. I'm the rare, cis-hetro male in his mid 30s who enjoys your work, as of this game. While I appreciate you including your demographic so directly in the GDD, I had to giggle as I was breaking norms. While I'll say I love a good, sad time, this game will certainly not be for everyone. I found myself playing through the game, wondering if the lack of abstraction from the problems facing the player might not prevent some catharsis within the player. While your demo only presented the option to (potentially) get enough points to leave with mom, my lived experience (and perhaps your own) would indicate that the story can be a lot more complicated than that. I would urge you to develop a fuller, agency enabling, more convoluted version of this story; and to deepen your sources and research in order to approach the material in a way that allows both parents to be the villain or hero as the player might perceive them. Thematically, I love the metaphorical route you've taken and understand completely where you're trying to point the story toward. It's tough material, but with time and a lot of playtesting I think you'll land on something truly meaningful and provocative of change. Your art and the music chosen were lovely. Thank you so much for this submission to Pirate Software Game Jam 16.

Yes

Summarise your game!
“they still love me” is a single-player visual novel created in Ren'Py about a child of divorce. As the child, the player must determine whether to side with one parent over the other or forge their own path.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Theme: In the story, the parents weaponize the player against each other. The player has to decide if they want to be a tool or not - and it will affect their life one way or another.

There is a content warning for emotional abuse.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Particularly the story and characters, but I appreciate you taking the time to play!

I like the concept of being a kid navigating a divorce.

Hey! I just wanted to say that I think the story has a great amount of potential and the writing is really good, even for such the short time it lasted! I really felt like a little kid caught in the middle of a crossfire. The art was really nice and polished and I liked the design of the mother.

One thing I really wished for was to get the dad's side of the story. I despise cheating as well, but if we're supposed to be weaponized by one against the other, shouldn't we get a bit of an interaction with the father as well? Make us really struggle with the decision on who to trust and believe? Either way, I understand this is a really personal story and maybe nit-picking is not really appropriate. I really hope we can get more of the story and characters since I think it has a really important message to tell. I hope you continue development and I want to thank you for sharing your story. Cheers.

Me and my team were so hyped for the divorce VN. Incredible use of the theme please keep working on it we'd love to play a more realised version

Nice concept! I'd have loved to see the story continue a bit more.

This game stood out to me greatly when I first saw this way back when. I commend you for trying your best in creating something so personal! I've been there before and it can totally be very draining to make something based off that experience. I also applaud you for being very open about how it affects you.

In terms of the theme, I can see how story wise it really fits in, both in terms of what's in the game and what isn't.  The dialogue choices were hard to pick through, in a good way, because damn does it seem like there really isn't anything to say in such a hopeless feeling situation, which I think was what you were going for!

If you ever do continue this I hope you can find a good balance of using your personal experience as part of a story while combining it with other aspects of story telling that you personally like. Great prototype! Genuinely excited to potentially see more of this idea/similar ones.

Thank you for the feedback and kind words.

It definitely took more out of me than I expected, but I don’t regret doing it. If I can overcome that hurdle, I might return to it one day.

I appreciate your time! :)

GDD makes me jealous. Good work!

Sound is a bit loud.

Never been a fan of visual novels, but this does show some good polish in the prototype.

Developer

Thanks for playing, and letting me know about the sound. the GUI has been updated, so you should be able to adjust the sound more easily now.
