  • Match & Slash was a fun, fast-paced, tactical combat puzzler. I found myself spending quite a lot of time inspecting the screen for as many combinations as possible and planning my faster path to drag everything into place within 7 seconds. Very fun, a little cute, and quite colorful. The UI theme and pixel art of the main game board clashed, in my opinion, although neither were especially bad looking at all. I recognized some textures, which I expect would be replaced if this were to become a full game. The style of the UI and main game board evoke the idea of a mobile game, and I would probably play it on a long flight. The upgrade system worked very well, and I found the gold rewards to be tight enough to punish players who don't use their heal ability (me). Thank you very much for this submission to Pirate Software Game Jam 16.

Description:
Match & Slash is a 2D strategy and combat game that combines match-3 mechanics with RPG elements. Players control a group of characters on a grid, forming groups of 3 or more to activate their attacks. At the end of the player's turn, the characters automatically attack enemies in a straight line. Enemies also have their own turns, where they reduce their attack timer until it reaches 0, at which point they strike back. The game features waves of enemies, with a boss at the end of each round. Between waves, players can upgrade their characters using rewards earned from defeating enemies.

Controls:
Mouse: Click and drag to move characters on the grid.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
With the theme of "You are the weapon", I used the characters to attack by throwing themselves directly at the enemies, the army is the weapon.

This was a fun take on the concept. It had a very mobile game feel to it. It was simple to pick up and I mostly understood what I was doing. I liked all of the enemy sprite work as well. I feel like the music could have been improved a little but it was still fitting to what was actually happening.

Overall nice game, I hope you learned a lot in this game jam!

Couldn't quite pull through my first try, made it to the end of round 4 and it was a joy! I will give it another go a little later. Only suggestion would be to show the levels of the colored minion dudes mid game so you know which ones will be the most destructive to combine. Super clean UI design!

Hey! Thanks so much for your comments, I’m really glad you liked it. That’s a great idea about the character levels, you’re right, it’s not easy to see which characters are the strongest. I really appreciate you pointing that out

Super fun game. Takes the match games like candy crush and puts it on it's head! My favorite thing was just being able to quickly put together large combos and sending it. The cute sprites are awesome. The UI looks good to me. Simple and balatro like. Controls felt really easy and intuitive to use. Simple concept pretty well executed! Think my only gripe is it seems like there is a mismatch between the enemies healthbar and them actually being dead. So that was a little strange.

Hey! I’m really glad you liked the game. And you’re right, when enemies have very little health, it looks like their bar is completely empty, but they’re still on the field. I’ll keep that in mind to make the remaining health clearer. Thanks a lot for your feedback

What a fun game! I really enjoyed playing it, I wish there were things like jokers in balatro where certain upgrade changes how you play. I imagine for this game something like allowing you to connecting diagonally(plus abilityto  move characters after they match) or remaining characters falls and matches like puyo puyo.

I really enjoyed playing it! great submission!

Hey, thanks a lot for your comment! I'm really glad you liked it.

Those ideas sound awesome! That would be a super fun way to add more upgrades to the shop and make the game feel even more dynamic. I really appreciate your feedback

That was amazing! Couldn't put it down.

I survived the 5-damage boss (tower-looking dude) with 1 HP and thought, I should quit while I'm ahead. It's a great idea and really well executed with a lot of polish. All the small animations really add to the experience.

Is there a trick to interest, though? Past the first level I never got any, even when beating a stage in turn 1. ^^"

Developer(+1)

I'm very glad you liked it and shared your experience with me. For the interest part, it depends on the amount of coins you have at the end of the round. For every 5 coins, you get an additional one. I should have put some indicator or something that would help with this point. I'll keep it in mind. Thank you very much.

Ah! Then it probably broke somewhere for me. I got 5 coins multiple times but never any interest. ^^"
