  • Ghost in the Shield was quite fun, and very frustrating. I feel like I finally know what support mains go through after spending a number of waves defending our poor, drunk knight. The single input control style, lively music, and pixel art style make this feel like it could be a very good casual game, perhaps with skins for the shield and different drunk knights to hold you, each with their own special abilities. I imagine adding in level transitions between waves might add opportunities for comedic timing. I found it hard to get past wave 3, due to the sheer inability to save the knight from his own call to the void. This game very much followed the theme of the event. Thank you very much for this submission to Pirate Software Game Jam 16.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
You play a sentient shield trying to protect its owner - mighty knight Sir Tumbleweed - from a horde of demons come to take revenge. You can only bonk the demons around desperately until the drunk idiot decides to go for a drunken charge, at which point you better be in front of him!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
What if the weapon you are is not a "weapon" in the traditional sense?

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
All of us work 40 hour jobs and we weren't able to take any extra time off for this. It was all done in what little of our free time we could spare. Proud to be part of it. Have fun! :D

This game is hilarious and fun! Drunk knight uses magic shield to defend himself from little imp demons? Sign me up. The controls feel responsive and feel easy to react to the imps. I like that "bonking" imps can make them  tumble into each other, nice detail there. The music is fun and fits the setting. All the SFX are awesome, I love when Tumbleweed goes into a drunken rage and you can just blast through the enemies. There are moments when I felt the spacing was unfair, but I think that's probably my 30 something year old hands just catching up to me. And honestly just made me want to come back for more because dang it this time I'm gonna get 50 bonks! 60 bonks!

Entertaining game!

This game is simultaneously rage inducing and super fun.

I really like the touch of the knight burping every once in a while, and the gameplay itself is really interesting and fun, especially when you get the temporary power up after killing a certain number of enemies.

I do feel that the speed of the regular shield can be a bit tough, since I ran into situations where I had enemies approaching me from opposite sides, and the regular shield was just way too slow to protect me.

The music is fitting whilst also making the situation feel funnier, and the sound effects are satisfying! Farthest I made in the game was wave 10, with 109 kills and 171 bonks. The game can make you rage, but it also works really well and I personally had a lot of fun with it. I really liked it!

Cool approach to the theme, I really love it when a game has simple controls and keeps an interesting concept, good job

Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. :)

We decided to stick with the core experience and make it as fun as we can in the end. Personally, I enjoy games with simple controls the most.

Simple and fun. I wish there was a little bit more depth, something to look forward to while playing. But it is fine as short casual game.

Developer

Time ran out for upgrades and more additions to the core experience, so we decided to just focus on that instead and make it as fun as possible. But I agree, just surviving gets shallow after a while ^^"

Thank you for playing!

This is so fun, i kinda got the drunken master vibes!
At first I thought the enemies were angry cats, especially with those sounds they make when they bump into each other.

Developer(+1)

Angry cats, haha! xD

Glad you enjoyed it! We were going for drunken idiot vibes but an actual drunken master might be a fun idea for a second character. :D

The feeling of knocking away the enemies was well implemented! Feels good to play! One of the little guys respawned right on top of me so that killed me. But overall nice work!!

Developer

Ayyyyy, what? Were you outside the screen at the time or very far off to the side? Ideally that shouldn't happen but it's a soft barrier at the moment.

Thank you for playing. Glad the main mechanic feels good to play! :D

I was somewhere in the middle.

Developer

Strange. I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Thanks for the report. :D

Haha loved the idea of playing as the shield of a drunken knight. The execution is great as well! The animations and sound effects are really satisfying, make you feel the impact of the hit. Maybe a button like R key for instant restarting, since I died a lot in the beginning lol :D Great entry!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, pause menu and restart button are lacking. That's jam games for ya. :D

Thank you for the feedback and thank you for playing the game! It's great to hear that the main mechanic is satisfying! <3

Haha, I actually really love the concept.  The drunkenness definitely adds a clever twist.  Nice and simple although can be brutal with the one shot kill haha.

Developer

The drunken movement throws me for a loop constantly as well. Paired with the one-shot kill it can feel a bit undeserved, I agree. ~~

Glad you still enjoyed it! :D
