  • The design document was not accessible from the link on the Rating page, but I was able to get to it from the published link on the game page. The design doc itself is organized and detailed. Inspirations are described well and images are provided to help anyone not familiar visualize the concepts. Mechanics, theme, and gameplay are explained thoroughly with diagrams to ensure intent is understood. Likewise, the descriptions of the artistic style are very clear and well outlined. The only component I didn't see was a breakdown of the development plan/timeline. I'm not sure I'd ever considered the DVD screensaver as a backup to the antivirus, but I'm glad it's there. The sound effects and background music worked really well. I also loved the art aesthetic. Everything felt like it belonged on in the correct era alongside the DVD logo itself. Great nod to the classic windows background. Placing blocks to try to direct the DVD logo was a fun challenge. Kinda like billiards if the ball never stopped moving. I did find myself wishing I had a way to remove a block I had placed/misplaced, possibly by right clicking on it. This is a fun little arcade game!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes? At least people in the Pirate Software discord could access it so...

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
The antivirus has failed, and it is now your job as the DVD Screensaver to save the computer from the malware. Although you cannot control the DVD Screensaver directly, you can place computer tabs in order for it to bounce off of. Have fun!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Theme in the gameplay: The DVD Screensaver itself kills the viruses directly upon contact, rather than with the use of a weapon or some other proxy.

Theme in the plot: The DVD Screensaver has become the weapon protecting the computer as a last resort, due to the Antivirus' failure.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Some sort of ranking, rating or anything tangible that I can put on my CV would help a lot for applications and stuff! (Sorry if that comes across as overly competitive or annoying)

Congrats on finishing the jam! For anyone else trying to access the GDD - you will need to do so from the game page the link on the rating page is not publicly accessible. Personal best is 430KB

I really like the visual theme of the game and especially the face on DVD. It would be nice if the CRT shader could be turned off as it's difficult to look at the screen full screen with it running.

The game is a little difficult to play. If a file spawns and you hit it, one or more may spawn immediately after in the direction the DVD is going. When you hit them it basically an instant loss. It would be more forgiving if we had some iframes or they didn't spawn in the direction we were going. Also, it's easier to avoid the files by placing a tab right where it spawns - not sure if intended.

I feel like the health drops too quickly when bouncing around. I didn't really have time to react to the placement of the virus and how to get there with making the DVD bounce in time. I actually found it easier to hit the virsuses when they were moving since I didn't need to place tabs anywhere except where the files were.

Great job!

Absolute banger of a game! It was a great balance between hectic and fun. The description was a bit confusing and I was worried it would be overwhelming, but once the game started I was surprised how intuitive and simple it was. 10/10

This was a lot of fun. I liked how hectic it was and it's really satisfying when you get the hang of it and are executing well. I kinda wish you could place the boxes anywhere instead of on a grid, cuz I'd accidentally place them not where I wanted to sometimes. I ended up going for maybe 5 or so runs cuz I was enjoying it so much and my best score was 215ish. Great work!

I like the UI and VFX on this, especially the losing animation! The game itself is really hard though, but did manage to get over 100KB seeing the screenshot I'd say thats good enough. :P.

An interactive tutorial with a bit of a slowdown in the beginning would do wonders!

Good Job
