Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • Progression curve was punishing, but not unachieveable. It was enjoyable enough that I went beyond the allotted judging playtime! Really enjoyed the game flow when the laser weapon upgrade was unlocked. Great theme interpretation, being a literal sentient spellbook was a great direction! Managing and corralling enemy mobs was enjoyable, but slippery at times. Player damage being simplified and what collision design was used felt a bit too harsh on the player. Too many times I felt there was a hole in enemy waves and incurred damage, unsure which enemy I was too close to and needing to avoid. Spells looked and felt great and were useful. Some of the AoE indicators (lightning?) did not line up and hit enemies way outside of the rendered AoE indicator either vertically or horizontally. I'd give more feedback but you already did it for me! Your team did enough QA and documented known issues and roadmap future updates in the GDD to fix in future builds. What it lacked in diagrams was made up by through descriptions in the GDD.

You are the Awakened Spellbook of an Order of the Scribe gnome wizard, named Dimitri Hoppadopalus. You are unable to find your wizard and must search for him. However, you accidentally enter the domain of a necromancer with a penchant for collecting and riding atop powerful spellbooks. As her minions are tasked with hunting the powerful magical item she senses, you must fight your way through this bullet hell in search of your master. After all, what's a spellbook without its scribe?

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Usually a weapon in the hands of a wizard, as a spell book you must wield yourself if you are to succeed.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The art and 2D animations. First time working with animation.

Title screen really sets up the mood. Awesome music, and I like the floating person on the left. The music during gameplay is also quite good, and the sound effects are also very fitting to each spell and are satisfying to listen to.

The game has really REALLY cool art, from beginning to end. The assets have a very impressive amount of detail to them and are quite refined. This also extends to the enemies and especially to the visual effects of the different spells you unlock.

My only suggestion is to make the movement speed a little higher, to make moving around a bit more dynamic. Other than that, there's some really cool stuff in this and it'll be interesting to see what you guys make in the future.

Keep making stuff!

Wow, thank you so much! It makes me so happy to see people like the art! The movement speed would be less of an issue if some of the other issues were fixed. We had planned to add a teleport/dash but the ever looming deadline prevented that and other features.

The game is quite interesting. I love the graphics and concept of it, but I am not 100% sure if removing the player agency of attacking is a good move in such games. I mean, there is not a lot to do when you can only move. If you really want to do movement only, you would probably need more movement options and upgrades just to make it more engaging. But anyway, I think you are onto something quite nice, and it definitely deserves a lot of praise on that. Good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I'm glad you enjoyed the graphics, that means a lot! There was meant to be more player agency with teleports/positioning/certain active spells and choosing upgrades/spells but they had to be cut due to scope and time constraints.

This is a fun survivors game! I like all the different spells you get and it's really satisfying to blow up a huge group of enemies. I think it'd be good to add a hit flash when you take damage, it's kinda hard to tell when you get hit unless you're watching the health bar closely. Great job on this!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it for the most part. I agree. We could also have done a lot better on the balance but ran out of time.

I think the idea of this is great. The spells look nice but it's it's hard to see where I'm going in the environment I can't tell if I'm hitting a tree or an enemy. I recommend bringing the saturation up or making the objects in the background clearer as they blend in with the background a lot

Developer

Thanks for your feedback. I somewhat agree. Currently the skeleton collision boxes aren't the best, but I can't update till after the game jam. My first time trying to make proper game assets so the lighting and contrast isn't great I admit. We all have to start somewhere.
