Great concept! Played on physical PD. Unless I'm mistaken, maybe the engine could be mapped to right and left D-Pad instead of having to swap with B. Felt a bit like a chore swapping back and forth. And the sonar coming from the center of the sub often left an entire sub length along the radius of the circle, so it was hard to tell when you were approaching a mine until you were already on top of it! Could be the problem with playing on physical at this time though. Loved the presentation and concept though, could see it being a ton of fun.
Hey, thanks for playing, apologies for any performance issues on device. I’m currently working on rewriting the whole thing to improve performance now that I know a little more about the handheld and the SDK.
The need to switch between engine/sonar manually was intentional, I wanted to create a risk/reward feeling of managing the two, and wanted to discourage just ploughing through pinging the sonar at all times. That said your point about the origin point of the sonar is a good one. I’ve now updated my rewrite so that the sonar ping spawns at the nose of the ship.
Thanks again for the feedback, hopefully I can stick with the rewrite and make it a a fuller experience that people can enjoy.
The game looks really good and plays great. Also it fits the theme perfectly. Great job :D
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it.
Great fit with the Theme of the Jam ! Had fun to find the ending without blowing up :)
Would love to see this on my futur device in an extend version.
I'd be great to have sound design around the sonar that could make the game even more immersive !
Yeah definitely would love to add some sound if/when it performs reasonably on device XD alas time was not on my side. Glad you enjoyed it though.
Such a creative concept! I loved the visuals and gameplay (and how I had to balance between controlling the engine, or controlling the sonar), and seeing all the circles ping and grow across the screen is really satisfying!
I hope you return to this some day to optimize it because it has a lot of potential :)
Thanks for the kind words, definitely a project I’d like to keep popping back into when I have some time here and there, maybe by the time I actually buy a device it might not run quite so badly XD
I really like the concept!
I sadly had to play it on simulator since the game runs at what feels like 2 fps on the PlayDate :(
I was worried about this, I didn’t have the physical hardware to test with, and not being particularly savy with lua, I can’t imagine the code is super optimized. Definitely considering getting a playdate in the future at some point though so may then I can come back and remake this properly.
i super hope you do. this is pretty great
