very interesting game but very frustrating as well.
Well firstly lets start off with some positives:
OK some things to improve on
I guess you wanted to make it a bit harder. I played the game for 20minutes and gave up. The feedback i gave was a bit of me raging so dont take that to heart lol. I think this game is really good and deserves to score high up there :)
EXTRA: feeling better now, i re read what i wrote and think its kinda rude sorry about that
I hope u have a good day and score well on this game jam!
Good idea! Sadly the gameplay feels weird - I could not kill the first enemy and kept overheating. There is not enough clarity in the game. But nice try!
Many have said this already, but the module system is great (reminds me of rougelikes). It is really cool that the parts heat up individually. I also like that you are not forced to kill all enemies. One thing I was changed is the knockback from enemy bullets, which sometimes makes you fly like crazy. Overall though, the game is good with nice graphics. Great work!
I can see the effort you put to this game, however there are some serious problems, and i will be writing them below. I see that you are a beginner so the problems are completely understandable and you will get better as you join more jams.
Lets start with doouble jump, I see you have just used addforce() or whatever it is equivalent in your engine. This is not too much of a problem but before you add the force, you have to set the player y velocity to zero. This way, lets say you are moving -1000 velocity, when you add the force the most that will happen is that the velocity will decelerate and become -800 for example. You see the problem, you double jumped, but are still moving downwards. If you first set the velocity to zero then you will move 200 upwards. Your implementation of double jump basically ruins the game and makes it almost unplayable(I did finish it and get to the Thanks for playing page tho)
What distinguishes a incomplete begginner project from a solid jam game is polish and gamefeel. I highly reccommend you to look at this video Can We Make This Button Fun To Press? (youtube.com). Add particles, effects, overexaggerate the power. Change the death animation to be more juicy, make getting hit juicy, picking power ups juicy, everything must become juiceeeeee.
Lastly the pixel allegation really changes the games feeling of professionality. The pixel sizes of the boxes, obstacles, player and enemies are all different. Again I reccomend this video A Programmer's Guide to Pixel Art (youtube.com)
I did not write all these in other beginner games, since I have not seen as much effort putten in their games as yours.
I like the interpretation of the theme, the selection of powerups are nice and overall , had fun and was able to finish the game in about 15 minutes most which were wasted due to the double jump(I think I could have finished this in 6 minutes if the double jump worked correctly) Good job!
great game! i like how you interpreted the theme: different body parts are responsible for different actions and they overheat independently, very clever. i think the controls are a bit funny; i don't understand why you have to shoot with the mouse in a such 2-dementional game, it's distracting, moving platforms feel frustrating because they move without the player, and I don't know why the timer doesn't reset when a player dies. but apart from that, it's a good game! i had a great time playing
nice game check on mine too
nice game check on mine too
Cool entry!
Gameplay wise, I think the core mechanics you have laid out are interesting and the upgrade system works as a way of having a lot of different ways to play, with meaningful changes that change how you approach levels. However, I think the controls could use a bit of work. For example, the double jump feels kind of inconsistent because I think you're adding a jump force but aren't setting the falling velocity to zero beforehand, so the result feels like you can rocket up really high into the air if you press it quickly, but then if you jump later into your fall, the jump lacks the same oomph. I feel like the combat could feel better if enemies' bullets pushed you around in more predictable ways. I think the dash could also set your fall velocity to zero before giving you the dash, because I feel like the level design really needs that. For example, in level 3, where you fall to a pit of blades, I had to get around that part by sticking to the wall and still touching a piece of the blades, because I couldn't get the dash to help me in that part. All of these things are very fixable, so don't worry if my feedback comes off as too negative!
In terms of the theme, I think this is the best aspect of your game. You managed to create an interesting system that makes sense mechanically and aesthetically, which is very cool. I think the core idea is very solid and you could easily expand it with more content and upgrades and stuff.
Aesthetically, I think the game works very well and looks coherent. There was a small issue where the sprite for the guy with the golf club gets kind of blurry. I think this happened because you disabled the filtering on the first sprite but didn't do so in the others, so it looks kind of blurry. Other than that, I think the game works pretty well.
In terms of the sound, I felt that the music was a tad too repetitive because you have a very short loop. You could play around with it a bit more, in my opinion. The soundscape also tended to feel a bit empty, I feel like you could add a lot more sound effects to give the game a bit more responsiveness in terms of player feedback.
Very cool entry, keep up the good work!
Thanks for your comment, your tips are very helpful! This is our third game jam (first platformer), so we made some stupid mistakes...
No worries! The most important thing is learning from it. Compared to my third game jam, this is already leagues ahead, so keep up the good work!
I have so much respect for the double jump location…. You could simply not go up that way and miss out on it.
Of course there are a billion overheat bar platformers in this jam (mine included)
Good things: overheat on specific parts, I love dash jumps, upgrades with choices. these things combined already made it a lot more fresh.
To Improve: the music is very annoying, it is such a short loop with constant beeping; the combat feels very meh and unimpactful (though I imagine if I had picked different upgrades it might feel better)
I’m rating it without finishing, so keep that in mind when taking my feedback into account.
why am I not finishing? I am a bit burned out games that are close in nature to yours (but admitedly without most of the good parts listed above), so that played a role.
Thank you for your comment!
The third level can contain any 2-star module, so for speedrunners, saving time may be more important than an extra module.(as planned)
Love the look and the sound. Fun to play, there is no way I could not speed run it but that's says more about me then the game. Nice work!
I like the idea of your game! The graphics are pleasing as well and the camera is very smooth. It is a little hard at first but otherwise it's a great game.
Realy nice game, i like the art and sounds. I wish the gameplay would be more polished, like the moving plattform moves the player and have a one way collision or the fall in the lava. But you made up for it with more content.
Animated sprites and general vibe is cool. Gameplay is nice as well but a bit slow for my taste.
I really liked the artwork in this game! I kind of wish the controls where mapped differently though, since it made it kind of hard to jump. I also felt as though the enemies had a bit too much health. Other than that great job!
Cool animation, level design and sprites!
More levels!
Nice, really nice
Yeah!
Animation!
Hard work - easy play.
Go on!
Cool gameplay and mechanic
