Really good game! If I were nitpicky I'd say the UI could be improved (there are a few times when picking dialogues where I picked the opposite of what I wanted cuz the "option selected" and "option not selected" colors are too similar lol) as well as the pacing (that last bullying scene was a bit too fast-paced imo? A couple pauses could have hightened the impact of the whole scene) but overall it's an excellent job that does really cool things with rpgmaker. Love the art. Love Mr Long-leg. Tilly kill yeeeeeey :D
I'll start by saying I really enjoyed playing this!!
The map design was a little bit distracting in some of the forest sections because the tree borders weren't really consistent and the overall look was kinda hard to read, but other than that I really loved the art! The deformed bully art was really amazing, I super enjoyed how grotesque they look. I thought the idea that Mr. Long Legs turned them into these deformed monsters was really cool and makes me so curious about what type of entity he is. The sound design during the final fights was so great, the chaos was super effective and made me feel like I was right there in the rage with Timothy. I think the action text during the fight for each attack really contributed to that feeling of blind rage as well. So great!
The story was great, it reminded me a lot of old creepypastas that I was always too scared to keep reading! The moments where Mr. Long Legs' face would slowly come into frame reminded me so much of a creepy comic that scarred me as a kid-- there was this one part where as you were scrolling down the panels, it would suddenly scroll for you and show you an animated jumpscare!!! I say all this as a good thing, the scares were really effective!
I really liked the idea of the hide and seek minigame, but I think it was a bit buggy. Mr. Long Legs didn't find me, but told me that he thought he taught me to hide better than that :-) I had to go find him to progress the game haha.
The story is quite creepy and has details that we like. We believe that the presentation could be improved by paying more attention to the mapping, although the art is quite good and its colors along with the music create a very good atmosphere. We have noticed that the announcement for the start of day 3 is missing. Mr. Long Legs is a character that could be further explored, his relationship with Timmy makes us cringe!! Overall, we have enjoyed the game. Good job :)
thank you!!
Gameplay:
The hide and seek was pretty creative! And terrifying hahaha. Honestly I like a lot of the gameplay in this game, there was more variation than I was expecting so it was nice to play around with different things! I think my one complaint, if I could even call it that, was that constantly adding in new gameplay made it difficult to get used to? Like adding in battles at the end was pretty jarring. However, honestly that kind of worked in the game's favor, and I could definitely see the purpose behind the battles. I think it worked in this game because of the story and the aesthetics, though I'm not sure you could pull it off in others.
Also I think for day four with the raincoat... I don't mind the look of the assets in the classroom but it's a little difficult to tell what side of the tables you need to search to look for it. I think some tweaks , maybe have a chair or something could make it more clear that you can check there?
Story:
This game took the theme of Untamed Wilderness and paired it with childhood imagination and horror pretty well. I liked how subtle things helped to tell the player early on how things felt off, and that they get more and more obvious as time went on.
Presentation:
The custom animations are really good. The sound design that goes along with them though really sells the horror all the more, good job on the combination! I couldn't tell you specifics because I got so scared I had to turn the volume really low to finish the game :,) Good job!
Creativity:
Honestly, for a game that's simple on the surface, it makes use of it's simplicity in very clever ways. Even the use of RTP assets to make you think you've come across a corpse, but it's actually a bird? Really creative, actually gave me a scare there. For a minute I thought somebody had died! But other things, Timmy being the one to make the mask and it actually doesn't represent Mister Long Legs at all, the body horror, the gameplay, all very unique and memorable.
Horror:
I don't know what's scarier- Mister Long Legs, or the fact that Timmy was already level three by the time he started... putting that experience to work in game. Good job!
Overall:
Sorry if I don't have much to say, that game was. Absolutely haunting. So, good job! Also, still wondering where Timmy's mom is.
thank you so much!!!
The vibe and style for this is great in many ways. I loved all of the hand drawn images, they all were easy to read and so creepy and nightmarish. They had a good mix of recognizable shapes mixed with body horror ick. Like someone had a figure made of clay and squished it and added gore. Very cool! Gross haha.
There were some tile/map issues and it really detracted from the really high quality writing and atmosphere. Like, I actually liked the hand drawn sketchy look to the house furniture but then the walls made 0 sense and looked just odd in a confusing "pulling me out of the moment" type way. And the forest had issues with trees being in half or weird corners and such. Not huge problems but the juxtaposition of the care put into the hand drawn images and the maps was jarring at times.
In general really fun! Ran into a few bugs or not knowing what to do but largely the writing and the genuinely creepy art and vibe of the story made up for any issues. Really cool!
Thank you for the pointers!!!
I think this game really speaks to me as a victim of school bullying/physical abuse; what the player character goes through is definitely a horror aspect that I've explored in instances myself- but the real horror out in the forest in the way the bullies was presented was really terrifying, especially Mr. Long legs' design and his creepy actions within the game.
For gameplay, unfortunately, things felt a bit awkward, from the minor bug(s) I ran into on my run, as well as a kind of blinking issue with the newly added(?) tileset in the area where you need to find the coat- when entering the map, there's no distinction between what to do until you stand in a specific area, where the tables shrink and chairs sometimes appear or disappear.
The map feels a bit large and empty in the segments where we're meant to find the creatures/bullies and it was somewhat difficult for me to find them all at first;; that may just be a *me* thing, though!
I do wish we were able to know more about the player characters' home life or maybe I'm just itching for more to inspect or learn about. A very creative entry, and I did feel a sense of unease overall!
Thank you for playing, and thank you for the detailed critique!
I'm not sure why the paralaxes in the classrooms are blinking-- I've never seen that before, but I can always work on ironing it out!!
Great Game, i likes your monster desgin. that so creepy.
thanks!
