The dev kept working on this & put alot more work into this for a full release on Steam! Surprisingly fleshed out final/complete version is really good. Checkit out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1411940/Silence_in_the_Dark/
You made a massive 2-floored level, lots of decorative sprites, multiple enemy types, an inventory with a crafting system, puzzles, multiple weapons, secrets and even a boss fight? This is really impressive! This game is a very cool survival horror with creative puzzles, I got nostalgic Silent Hill vibes while playing.
Small remarks I can make are that I had to do a lot of boring backtracking in this game, which is could have easily been fixed by adding a few shortcuts. Another thing is that you can shoot through walls, and that made the enemies a lot less threatening. EDIT : Oh yeah, and the game file is extremely heavy. Half a gigabyte? I don't understand where the size comes from. Please consider at least compressing your files.
But overall, this was premium quality, and I had a huge thrill against the boss fight when I was out of ammo and I scrambled in my inventory to drink that dangerous-looking purple potion and savagely hacked the monster to death with my axe! That was damn fun!
(too bad I didn't find the shotgun, I would have used it to find and kill that guy who plays the creepy didgeridoo !)
Thank you for small remarks. I definitely won't abandon this project and continue development. Silent Hill was the inspiracion and the school map was used from original ps1 game SH. I just over traced the map with walls. Also I did add some of my ideas too :). And glad you like it. A Lot of assets(pretty much all of them) and some code was borrowed from a game I am making it right now. This is my first game jam.
I really the like the idea of this game :3 Sadly, I wasn't able to get very far due to a couple of similar reasons mentioned in the comment below :( I went into a room where there was a creepy nurse-like character, but it runs so fast at me and goes inside my body so there's nothing I can do to fight it once it reaches me >.<
I thought the intro scene with the voice over was really cool though! If that was you, you have a nice voice :D Also, I was really pleased to find at the start that you can click on the newspaper on the bench to read the story :3 I love having lots of stuff to interact with like that!
It seems like there's a lot of content here considering it was a pretty short jam, so it's totally understandable that there are bugs (mine has some little bugs too cos there just wasn't enough time to do extensive testing + fix everything) and I noticed on your page that you said it's still in development, so I'll definitely come back to it :3
there's a shotgun outside. That would definitely help you with the nurse ๐. Thanks for playing it :)
Thanks for making it + for the tip :D I picked up the gun outside where you start, but I panicked and used up all my bullets on some of the other creatures I encountered first, haha. I'm probably gonna have another go later today to see if I can explore more of it cos I'm curious to know what's going on :3
Not sure why nobody has rated this game yet, since it looks so good.
I really enjoyed playing this, but there were some issues. I found that the feel of the game was good, but mechanically it was lacking. There were a number of bugs, including enemies and the player being able to see through walls, the player being able to shoot through walls, the weapons sometimes not reacting to input, and there being almost nothing you could do once an enemy was attacking you at close range (the gun wouldn't fire for me and there was no way I could see for the player to get out of melee range; feel free to correct me if it was just my noobishness).
I really respect and admire that you went for a more feature-rich game. The inventory, the crafting/combining, the heartbeat monitor, even the loading screen tips, all made the game feel full and finished. The problem with having all of these features is that I think the core gameplay quality suffered. Personally (for a game jam with limited time), I think that it would have been better to focus on the core aspects of the game and made them as fun and functional as possible. The scope was a bit too large, and I think that hurts the game, especially if it's done in 10 days.
Another thing that I think could really use an upgrade is the sound design. A lot of the sounds felt out of place or were poor quality (I think the footsteps in the snow sound is the worst offender). The footsteps were also kinda repetitive (one tip I would suggest trying is to change the pitch slightly of each footstep. That should help to add some variance).
Still a cool game, and I think you did a good job with this :)
yeah for Short jam the scale was to big. :) Thanks for playing it :)
Charming game! Reminded me if the PS1 GTA games had a baby with Silent Hill
Thanks. That was the idea :D
