You have a good game. If the move to itch.io went better, I would happily play this more. "Pickup Count" could easily be written as "Fish Eaten" or similar, and a start or pause button could be added so players aren't immediately thrown into gameplay, but I enjoyed the experience.
I like the idea of the game but it was a bit difficult to play with the arrow keys. Pressing up and down also made the page itself scroll so I had a hard time being able to see the actual game. I think if the game window was a bit bigger it would help a lot.
I think changing pickup count to fish eaten would have made more sense. Also, finding sound effects that fit in an underwater environment. The sound effects that currently play remind me of old Game & Watch games.
At first I experienced a glitch where if you didn't move the player to the right right at the get-go, they would be invisible. I figured this out and got to playing the game.
The player moves really slowly, whether up or down, or left and right. I think slightly increasing horizontal player speed, and drastically increasing the vertical player speed might get you a better swimming feel for the player character.
Also, the hit-boxes are rather big and janky, and I ended up hitting enemies that I shouldn't have.
Also, the fact that there's no collecting green fish sound detracts from the experience due to it creating a lack of overall player feedback.
Ultimately, this has the makings of a good game, but needs some ironing out.
I noticed that sometime I would avoid the red fish, but it would still count as a hit. Maybe the hit-boxes for the red fish are a little too big?
I also experienced the scrolling-page issue with the arrow keys. Frankly I will just blame itch.io for this, and not you. Also this is an easy fix so it isn't too big of a deal.
I like how the text beneath the canvas changes color based on what fish you touch.
I liked the general gameplay. This was the first game I've played for this project where the player is stuck on one side of the screen. I did run into the issue where the entire screen would scroll down when I tried to move the blue fish down. This could just be an issue with either the browser or my computer's settings, however. Aside from that, I noticed that the player sprite flashes every time it's moved. This could be an issue with redrawing your canvas!
