  • took me a lot of time to figured out how to get the password and play the game, and I am sure the way I did was not correct, as I discovered where the files were and looked on its source to get the password. Also having to wait for 20 real minutes was really a turn down. Other than that, seems like a good game/idea.

How many people worked on the game?
2

What elements of the game did you NOT create? (No need to mention engine, OS, etc.)
I guess an automatic link or 2 the game will open like music to youtube.

What do you think we can do to improve the next jam?
This is my 1st time so I would not know yet Joshua :)

Hey-Oh! I'm the ideas guy for this game, and I'd like to thank all those who came up and played this really cool game!

If anyone is having a tough time with the dragon protagonist's name, Lohikäärme, it's actually pronounced "LOH-hee-CARE-meh". The closest sound I can compare "Ä" to in today's English is the "a" sound you hear in words like "catch" or "magnet". The game itself doesn't have those special " ¨ " marks above the "a's" in the text, unfortunately, but let's pretend they're there, haha! The name comes from the Finnish word for "dragon". Why Finnish? Eh, I was feeling lucky, and I wanted this character to be unique from many other dragons you might be more familiar with.

If Lohikäärme's name is still a bit of a mouthful to have deal with, that's okay!

You can call him Lohi for short!

Here was my side of playtesting back in the day :)

I cracked up so much yeah so sorries I did edit the files as soon as someone told me however due to it being in a jam I couldn't do the hot fix even though sadly I was aware of these problems after I submitted as only after submission did I get play testers to try it oopsies my bad but I did crack up when watching and I think I'm more than safe now to actually upload my new files! Again it's not anti "Piratable" Yet it's a work in progress to get to that stage! I'm more about trying to figure a way to lock down the files to be edited 1st which will take some time to do, and then from there I can work on Anti Piracy :D For now I will upload the new edits I done awhile back which I was blocked from adding to my main page oddly enough!

Developer

Also in Batch you have to type the letter once and hit the enter key once only each! I think you were double hitting the enter key! I mean it is possible I can code in a catch or a wipe of the input to refresh the screen twice! But again I never had others playtest it till I submitted which kinda was too late when I saw a hoard of problems! :)

Developer

For music I dunno if it is possible in batch atm, I'm still learning python and javascript but for now it is what it is :)

Interesting using Bat files. Had to read through the comments in order to figure out how to get the game to run.  Thoughts:

  •  Not sure how I feel about running .bat files from a random internet page O_o
  • The password thing seems a little excessive for a jam game, especially because you have to manually get it from the file and there is no instruction how to do that included in the ReadMe
  • Cool animations.
  • Wish you had extracted the game setup files into the same folder so removal wasn't an extra step.
  • Maybe it's because always on type games aren't my cup of tea, but hours to complete seems a bit steep in a jam game, especially if there isn't much variety to the content. But that might just be me.
  • Cool idea though.

Lols... I will have to wait 4 more days to upload the said files as apparently the Jam blocks my game on my side but no worries! I guess I will just add more goodies to the new and improved version of the game! Anyways I fixed Password and Meditation and a few other goodies btw :) so Dec 31st my new game files will be up for everyone! For now since I can't upload what you see is what you get for now! Let me know when the Jam is over if your interested in seeing my new edits :D

I will now take the feedback you all gave me and I will take 1 day and edit my game on the game side of things, not this submission side of things 24 hours I should have some new polish to the game hopefully, I will rework a few concepts around and make them more spread out and not as many in 1 janky things as placeholders! Between 3 people I now know what needs to be fixed thanks I will also reduce Meditation times to 5 mins but you will always get +50 Exp always and then you will get a 1 in 7 chance to gain Attack, 1 in 7 chance to gain Defense, 1 in 7 Chance to gain HP and 4 in 7 chance to gain no stats, However EXP always is Guaranteed! Next up I will make the Math game part of the Meditation so actually scrap the 5 Mins, it will be until you get 5 correct answers instead however you can choose to Do the Time instead so scrap that again it's back on the table in that regard! Last up Player ID will use double the length of Formula +Time! And passwords will then be able to be set however you will have a toggle to turn on or off passwords meaning a Password can be set but it's your choice if you want it activated or deactivated! Also up I will give a very slight starting stat boost but make meditating Capped at 250 per game this will allow Fighting to begin out of the box but still allow a chance to lose the game if not careful! Give me 1 full day aka 24 Hours! And I will hotfix these changes on my game page side! From there to play again you will need to reinstall as certain structures will change so the old files indeed will be obsolete but don't worry if existing files are there my new files will overwrite my previous files meaning also you will need to start over in the new Fix, Player ID will be saved on Password.bat for now to not complicate things Password toggle will be the Lohi thing still and Password will be well your chosen password! Thanks for your feedback I will make a new version however the new version will be 50 cents USD for now just so that there is no confusion on which is new and which is old files! Old Files for Jam always will be free Hot Fix always will be 50 Cents USD and then the real polished game will be one day maybe 2 or 3 dollars which yet again the price will indicate new update new product etc. Cheers! :D

After many troubles, I finally played the game. To be frank, it seems everything in this game is designed against me - it seems my only options are to immediately die in a fight or become a cryptocurrency miner and do math problems for 20 minutes. I'm not sure exactly what you were going for in terms of design and gameplay. However, I do congratulate you for building a rather complex game out of batch files; that is pretty impressive. Perhaps if you would like to check out my game you could provide feedback as well. I would appreciate it!

Developer

Well in reality all you need is like 26-29 meditations! Just be sure to press E to buy Regen Bread "25 EXP = 1 Regen Bread" or "525 EXP = 1 Regen Bread and +1 Permanent Attack" The 525 Exp is kinda a hidden part but it does exist! If you chose Attack upon character creation you woulda had 4 Attack from there you indeed want to meditate right away until attack is 30 from there you want to fight as much you can! Bats +1 Exp , Rats +10 Exp , Dragons +100 Exp, End Boss nothing cuz well you win! Attack Path means 25 Exp to use immediately to press E to get 1 Bread! Bread Path means you have to meditate more often but you wont lose Stamina and overall is actually the most stable of the 2 but time wise Attack path is quickest cuz You always strike 1st in game and 2ndly all that matters in game is you hit the heaviest blow 1st to bring the enemy HP to or below 0 HP! You need stamina to keep attacking and you need bread to replenish HP and Stamina to full it's hard to explain the battle mechanics it's very complex all you really need to know 30 Attack before fighting gives you absolute best odds! If you want guaranteed odds well then 600 Meditations would do it 100% for sure and regardless of any path you took you win the game but you would still need to slug through until you even Find the Boss Dragon which is extremely rare odds The Boss is in a last ratio Mob Dragon within last Boss Ratio meaning I dunno 1 in 10,000 chance I dunno I never calculated the math on the Boss but 25x250 I think and that be maybe 1 in odds of that number! Meaning 30 attack should suffice as every 5 basic dragons slayed gives you 1 Gem and 5 gems give you boosts too "ALL" stats! Far as mobs go when you consume 5 gems well they gain less stats than you but you always gain 5-6 points of overall power while the others gain something like +1 to all stats you gain like 7 or 8 total, I will have to re-look at it again! :D

Ok, I played it! There's some nice concepts here, leveling up your dragon by fighting and meditating. I only got one gem after several fights, though, so couldn't upgrade anything. Meditating takes too long in my opinion, but I like the idea of having a minigame associated with it. It might be better if you could just play the minigame 1-5 times to meditate, rather than wait 20 minutes (unless you want to take the the full-on idle game route, in which case you'd design things differently). The minigame (math problem) doesn't accept the right answer though, only the wrong ones. In my first try, I tried fighting and died pretty quick. On my second try, I meditated and returned to the game every half-an-hour or so to restart meditating. Then I started fighting again, and got my first gem after 20 fights or so. It wasn't enough to upgrade, might be better to give those to the player more often. Feels like the game could go somewhere if there was more gameplay. Right now it's either pressing M every 20 minutes, or F every 10 seconds. Btw, it's impressive that you made it in .bat code instead of using a game engine. I don't think many people did that for the jam. Good luck developing the concept further (if that is your intent)!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Thanks for the feedback! Thanks yeah the MiniGame was actually ripped from my https://sarainia.itch.io/core-math-clicker game in which both right and wrong answers did work in that and still do however but I dunno maybe I forgot to carry over a simple script over by chance!? And yes I do agree the Meditation is very long 1200 seconds to be precise however I was on 2nd last day so instead of hunkering down to figure what a person can do I just copied over some code and threw it in the extra file! And regardless that extra file does not affect the game in any way! In fact watching youtube or playing another game when meditating or doing chores has literally the same exact effect I just threw it in just to have something thrown up so people don't get bored off the bat but what I can do is work that into the main game and not be a boredom defense and make it a 5 questions they have to get right sorta thingy and remove the 1200 second timer! But then again when Monks meditate usually it can be hours to if not days! So 20 mins might be the right track for the player to feel immersive in it but maybe I need yet another workaround for the MiniGame instead for now I don't have any serious ideas that pop to my mind! Plus I need to fix the chosen ability part so when you die that your not given defaults! Cuz to choose the upgrades and weaknesses only ever trigger upon character creation but if you die then well there is not that screen to start from again so that is yet another ting to work on someday! Atm the MiniGame for now is not solely part of the game it just sorta fits the theme of Lohi meditating about numbers and sorta introduces you to my other game in a lesser way! Far as me making this into a further game or expand on concepts well I will leave it open for now as projects to stay looking at for now maybe I will complete it in full :)

Developer

PS ... I chose .bat code because it's a very text based way of doing things and I don't have current working knowledge how to even add wingdings or unicode so based on that knowledge I was already set in stone to be Ascii all the way and all I had to come up with after checking that Box of knowledge off was Just the "Dragon and Dungeon" part lols :P Though I was gonna initially rip code from core math clicker it came apparent I needed a different structure for Stats thus old code for me was actually quite useless and I had to build the whole foundation up! had I been able to just copy most the code over I woulda worked on animated characters and mobs which I still might do btw! The only thing animated was the Numbers in which I remembered a show called The Matrix which was numbers so I remembered a past project I done not on itch btw and I coded up The Matrix and chose like a Purplish color to signify not green but like Psychic meditation ish like feel as Purplish color kinda reminded me as that so this project sorta took me down memory lane in a few areas! Unfortunately I was not able to reuse code thus the game all you can do is "M" and "F" for now! I wanted to get a Storekeeper in the game and also even have items at one point! Well Regen Bread was as far as items went lols and that was not a true item it was just a number stored by text saying Regen Bread followed with an in battle function to use it! So yeah.. Not yet an object/item quite yet but almost there. :D

U , E , S , would also work too but E is if you have 25 EXP or if you have 525 EXP pressing E woulda gave you a neat surprise btw "Jorova" :)

Um... couldn't play the game. It asked for "the number we told you to make note of", but such number didn't exist. There was that math equation you could do before setup, but it didn't react to numbers I typed in, and the numbers didn't work as the password for the game itself. Honestly I don't know why you'd make it so convoluted to play in the first place. Also, when starting the game, it also opens a YouTube video for some reason. I would've loved to play the game, particularly with the Finnish word in the title, but couldn't, sorry!

Developer (1 edit)

Alright the Password is also your player ID it's to prevent a bot from getting in, next off the password will disable itself once the original numbers are entered think of it as sort of a "Captcha" and no worries about the youtube link just goes to some No-Copyrighted music I scoured the youtube net for! If by chance you forgot the password or misswrote it down, go into CMD and type attrib +r -h +s "C:\Prototype Secure Game Files" then from there goto your C:\ drive and find Prototype Secure Game Files, then what you do is find Password.bat right click edit open with notepad or whatever copy that Number the Password=#### is , and when in game paste it in! I can care less if people wanna hack the files as this is just a prototype anyways but if you want to play it as expected just only do the Password to get started "Best of luck Jorova" thanks for reaching out! I'm still actively researching better ways to incorporate Captcha's and Passwords and Player ID's but trust me the number does in fact exist! ;)

Developer

Also attrib +r -h +s "C:\Prototype Secure Game Files" is the only way to also uninstall afterwards btw as I don't have a concrete plan of how to create an uninstaller at this point of time :)

Okay :D I found an easier way to get to the game though - I found the number in the "Password" -file and copied it from there. Will give feedback later.

Also now thinking back on it Making a game outta Batch for a Jam may have been a bit too tough for me to chew as there is No ways I can think of for Mouse or Sound interactions thus it's purely keyboard and when you start the game it calls a No-Copyright Battle Game Music via a youtube which starts in your browser and you have to minimize it to play the game! So I would say Batch games are riddled with problems but at same time I'm most fluent in batch over any other language atm! But I hope you all enjoy! :)

Developer

I thought at 1st the submission was just public only to those on Voting etc. because making it free for all, kinda defeats the purpose of if one day my team members want to revisit this project and make it full on have a price to it if we decide to add more content but seeing as this is my 1st jam it likely will stay in it's current form regardless bugs or glitches that may occur etc. :)
