This is your first completed project? Great stuff, especially when I think about how my first couple rpgmaker games turned out. Some creative maps in this, definitely captures the dreamlike feel you were going for I think. I'm also glad you included the answer maps for the people who needed them, otherwise I would have spent a bit too long wandering.
I had a lovely time with this game - I liked how the stages tied themselves to specific incidents, which made me think about how those events impacted Reimu mentally. Very nice dreamlike vibes.
Yume Nikki-style fangame? You got mah interest bud
I like how you went for a more comprehensive storyline compared to the usual Yume Nikki cryptic style, but I feel like you could have explored it even further. To be specific, I never really understood what Reimu's fears corresponding to each area was. Even adding a little bit of dialogue between each area event would have helped. For example: What did the hands in the first area represent? How did Reimu feel when she lit up the lamps? Why do the rabbits hurt Reimu so badly? And finally, what exactly did Doremy do to dispel the fears?
The gameplay is also nice and sandbox-like despite the clear progression. I like how Doremy and Reimu hint at how far you've gone in the fetch quests in the 2nd and 3rd areas, it made me feel like I was actually getting close to the goal and not just wandering hopelessly not knowing what else I should do.
The 3rd area has a glaring issue in its pacing, though. Firstly, are way too few spirits for the size of the area., I suggest either increasing the number (4 should be fine) or having the area be lit via a limited-use skill. I also would recommend making the spirits & talismans move Very Little (or even not at all), since they move so much that its inevitable they won't be in the exact spots in the game guide. (I found talisman 3 in the middle of the area, when it was signified to be in the bottom left.)
Last but not least, I love the music. It's the best part of the game and the musician really captured that atmospheric, dreamike Yume Nikki feeling well.
For a game jam entry though, this is a solid work. Good job!
thank you so much for this review, I'm glad to see that you liked my game on certain points! I quite agree with your criticisms. the 3rd zone was very poorly managed, and it is the one that requires the most work in terms of gameplay. I hope if I make a more advanced version one day I can develop a more concrete story!
(sorry if my english is bad, I'm not bilingual at all ;~;
Everything was good, but the spritework in particular more so.
I appreciate Doremy's coldness toward Reimu. And the "corrupted" music.
oh thank you very much!!! Honestly I didn't know doremy before the touhou game jam, I'm happy to have managed to give her a little personality !
commentated rpgmaker dream worlds, feels unusual. im walkin places then i remember we have a big ol 337 hp doremy sweet on board talking about stuff
eientei was kinda hard to navigate since i did not ever find any of the light spirit things. i just wandered around in complete darkness until i randomly hit one and thought that i just had to wait for light next time it happened. i was wrong
only managed to get through by popping the game open inengine to see where the yin yang orbs were and speedrunning to them with perfeclty optimized rpgmaker movement, and it was still pretty close to going all black on me
also the first yin yang room kinda chugs. not sure what you can do about it or how it even happened but its there
still cool game though i like the wine glass hand and the big yin-yang orb doin its thing and the secrets
thank you very much for this comment. actually I may have focused too much on the graphic and technical aspect, to the detriment of gameplay and fun. My game lacks interest, maybe also explanation, believe me that all this I will not forget for the next time!
I'm thinking of eventually making a more complete game of it one day, and I assure you that this comment, I'll think about it to correct the problems. Thanks you again !!!
Man, this is a trip! I like the pace in this game a lot better than most games I've played like this one.
WAAA THANKS YOU ^-^
