Aaaaa I died right at the end of the bossfight and was sent back to the start
This was pretty on-brand and original, the a capella audio goes without saying and I liked the multiple bullet types as well as reference(s) to Unwriggleable Night.
Acapella game, round of applause for the originality. Audio is ugly af, but it made me lol.
I didn't found this so hard as they said, missiles solve any problem, what I found was a bug, if you enter yuuka fight while shooting flamethrower you're stuck with that sound the rest of the game.
Not exactly my favourite, but the effort is appreciated.
yeah flamethrower is bugged all over the place. i've also noticed that if you die while holding the button the sound continues until you press and release the button with the default weapon, and that if you run out of ammo the sound continues alongside the sound for the default weapon until the button is released
the acapella was less originality and more that i didn't have time to properly compose music before the deadline. i ended up reusing a couple sound clips from a prior game, but the music is all new to this game
Even if audio was improvised, you should consider that on a future game, its totally original
It took me... a lot of tries to beat the game, lol. I struggled so much in the second room. Honestly I hadn't realized you could strafe, so thanks to the comment below for that.
I liked that little animation of Yuuka positioning her umbrella. The bosses' dialogues were quite funny. The sound effects take the cake, though. That "ow!" fits so damn well.
tbh im glad you noticed the umbrella animation i wanted that to specifically be in as a little animation flourish which led me to adjusting how i use my dialogue engine to allow for animations between words and it feels so much more versatile now
So first I have to ask: is there a particular reason the keys are Z and C?
With that out of the way, I'll also say that: the Flamethrower shot felt like a downgrade from the default shot, you can't strafe when you're not shooting, and that the game's slightly too easy (when you're not equipped with Flamethrower).
The rest I found to be actually decent, there's never too many shitpost-like creations that take itself seriously. When I saw how Marisa was taught the Laser Spell™, I'm sure I grinned.
Z and C is mostly bc i was using an input script from a prior jam and those happen to be the focus shot and auto fire keys. the general control scheme i kinda blatantly stole from hyper princess pitch bc i enjoy that they made "keyboard only twin stick" work, which is why strafing requires focus shot
i agree that the flamethrower kinda feels like a downgrade, *especially* compared with the missiles. i could probably adjust it to be way more powerful or spread out larger or something
Unlike Aeon, I am an epic hardcore retro gamer girl who has
beatengotten to the final level of Battletoads without cheating, so I was able to beat this game without cheats (on my second try). I liked the different powerups, though they're so much more powerful than your normal shots that they trivialize encounters like the Wriggle fight. Maybe that's okay, though? The game screen was sorta zoomed in, but I could manage just fine. Also it seemed like the Master Spark got way bigger as the Yuuka fight went on, which was nice. Though I do wonder if you could've introduced attacks other than the master spark for the final fight, and either made Yuuka's health lower or given a powerup in the middle of the fight to compensate.
Beautiful audio as well. Brings a tear to my eye.
In short, 'twas nostalgically arcadelike.
i'll be honest i had spent most of the time programming the scenario and didn't even touch the gameplay until the last couple days after work so i'm amazed it even functions at all
if/when i revisit this for a post-jam bug fix run i'll probably be adding more phases, i just needed "technically a boss fight" for the jam release
never change
i couldnt beat it because it was too HARD and ZOOMED IN and i couldnt CHEAT
but still, instant ten
oh no ive become a brand D:
tbh the zoom is something i noticed as probably an issue and at this resolution (480x360) a 32x32 character size would have been better idk why i didnt change it
its aight its still a funny lil guy
great ost !
