Super impressive looks, nailed the noise/pixelation effects! The game was fun and enjoyable, only part which “irked” me is the transitions when you move from bottom to top on a scene, for me it was quite hard to get a grasp on where I would end up, and felt like it broke the flow a bit, cuz I had to wait.

Other than that, super solid entry in 2 hours, amazing job! 3200!

Developer

Ah, yes it also "irked" me quite a bit too. It's because it's basically just a simple screen wrap so you're always going to appear on the "opposite" side when you go off the top/bottom or left/right of the screen.  And sometimes it triggers more than once because of some wonky hit boxes. I was intending on cleaning it all up but got caught up fixing other things here and there and had to roll with it:) Thanks for playing and glad you enjoyed it!

Developer

Haha, I just watched your stream where you played the game. That was amusing, thank you! And I absolutely put "Press T to Try Again" at the last minute because I knew people would be mashing "SPACE".  And I tried doing a hold or cool down, but it wasn't cooperating so thanks for giving me a pass!

At least you didn’t made the mistake of the feature not working, sadly mine is bricked atm T_T you have to reload the page, or know about the builtin enter menu inside PICO-8 to reload the cart.

Congrats for the entry! Very impressive you did this in 2 hours. I like how holding the button is re-purposed for rotating the ship. Having a filter over the screen also adds a lot more visual flare.  Sometimes the screen switches to another one even if I still have some room left to go (trying to shoot some asteroids near the right-hand side) but other than that great job!

Developer

Agreed about the inconsistent switching! It was a bit buggy but I couldn't put a fix in without redoing WAY too much before I had to submit. Thanks for playing though and all the kind words!

Awesome.  Cool concept with room to grow.

I wish the gameplay was a little more polished - for example, more time to navigate one screen, strategize, and build some anticipation before moving to the next screen.

Everything else (titles, sounds, visuals) is extremely polished - so congrats!

Developer

Haha, thank you. I also wish the gameplay was a little more polished:) I was having trouble getting some of the timing right so had to kind of settle for what I had and polish up what I could before submitting! Thanks again though for playing, and I appreciate the feedback!

The more I play SPACED OUT, I actually enjoy the screen resetting.  Keeps the player focused.  Only problem is when the player goes off the bottom of the screen mid-way and it resets faster than expected.  I wonder if the ship could bounce of the bottom edge to keep that screen alive the typical time?

I think both of our games would benefit from an audible 5s count down and a fun visual transition to the score screen.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I really wanted to do a transition to the score screen and from the title as well...but it was already around midnight since I started late and I just had to submit:/ And I also agree that the reset that happens faster than expected in those situations is annoying. I'll definitely go back and tinker with it a good bit after the jam is over.

Congratulations on your game, well done in just two hours!

Nice idea to adapt this type of shooter to a single button, it works very well.

You even managed to add particle effects that look very nice. I also really liked the "noise" (I don't know how to call it?) effect, it looks very nice and fits the game's atmosphere and story.

It is also cool that you have added different points depending on the size of the asteroid, which adds to the gameplay as you have to think about which one to shoot.

Developer

Thank you! I appreciate you playing and leaving constructive feedback. There was so many other things I wanted to add or play around with, but I started pretty late and didn't have much time this weekend even to toss around ideas in my head.  Tweaking some of the movement or the speed of the projectile are definitely things I wish I would've got nailed down better but I'm just glad it ended up being functional:)
