Anything you want to say to players before they play?
Can you help the Royal court musician play the hottest hits of 1680 for the King? Just click the Harpsichord keys when they appear on screen to play music. It is a very simple and "very original" concept... What could possibly go wrong??? You will find more control info in game. Can you trigger the main menu Easter egg? You'll know when you find it.

A game made with Godot Engine by Spyridon Glarakis for the "Unexpected Jam" (2020).

Hope you enjoy! :)

Haha the twist was definitely unexpected :D

Although I'm not good enough to actually complete the last level, I think the extra gameplay mechanic makes this game very different from the generic piano tiles game that you initially disguised it as!

The evil menu looks very cool, is that the Easter egg? I don't actually know how I got it to appear lol, I just clicked the play again button and it came up.

The main thing that would make this a lot better is more rhythm rather than just having the notes come every beat. I kept playing it with the right rhythm on purpose to make it sound nicer and it would be really cool to have it play with the right rhythm. Although, I must admit you picked a great piece that still works pretty well even if you play every note with the same rhythm!

Lastly, the sounds are great (which is obviously very important for a rhythm game) and it is very obvious when you mess up which is good too.

Hello thank you much for taking the time to write such a review! 1st of all, the evil menu os not the easter egg, it is what you get after you get to level 3 so you don't have to replay from level 1 if you don't want to. To give you a clue: the easter egg is at the evil menu! All your comments are absolutely on point! I'm planning to add rythm in the future when I get the time (I just did another Jam sooo...) and I chose this song especially because it works good like that! To be honest, I changed the song just before submitting and I play the game exactly as you do, with timing in head! :p

Again, many thanks!

Hey. I recorded a video about the Unexpected jam and included your game in it. If you want to cut your game out of the video, let me know. However, if you like the video, I make similar videos every day. I will be happy if you subscribe. Anyway, I enjoyed playing your game.

Thank you very much for playing! Watching your video made me realize there might be a bug on some computers/browsers! After you get game over on level 3 , the "click me button" should get you to a second menu, there you can choose to play just the 3rd level. I saw that other people wouldn't get that menu but now I also have proof that it wasn't user error! Thank you very much again! Subscribed :)

Thank you. i enjoyed playing it. I will play it again for myself next update. I hope the bug will be fixed. I really like the mechanic. :D

Has a pretty funny story and fits the unexpected theme well. Also, GUESS WHO'S BACK

Developer

Thank you and congrats ;)

The tri-tone strikes! Hendrix would be proud, and for that matter Bach would as well lol. Great game, and execution. The slower level was kind of hard to get playing but the next level was good.

This is a fun and pretty well made little music game. I also like the story part. Well done.

i love rhythm games but it got too hard to avoid the demons lol

Very nice! Love how it progresses from simple to pretty hard. The unexpected bit is nice as well. The game may need a little bit of rhythm, so that the music sounds better when you press the keys. Great job overall!

Thank you very much! Adding rhythm is very much needed, I will do so post jam!

Funny story and nice twist! I laughed at the fact that you had to make the king not notice something horribly wrong. It's a nice touch with the evil menu and normal menu. Overall, it's polished and fun! Play my game if you get a chance!

I love the concept, world, choice of music, and of course the game engine (I work in Godot Engine too ^_^).

Really really wish there was a way to pick which level to play....had to restart from scratch a couple different times and never fully got the grasp of the new controls introduced...would have loved to be able to restart at the beginning of 3 vs. having to go back to 1! I saw your comment to another comment saying a similar thing and still cannot for the life of me find this easter egg menu option to start at 3 :(

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you very much! Answering here to maybe help other people ^^ when you reach level 3, instead of the restart option you get the "click me" this gets you to the 2nd menu, where there is the option play true level! ^^ p.s: this has nothing to do with the easter egg. The easter egg is much more obscure!

I hate it when I play fresh beats from the 1680s and nothing goes wrong. Thank goodness you've created a remedy.

There were no mosh pits that time around, only devil's pits!

Your game is very addicting because I'm a sucker for games with high scores and I now realise how shitty it must be to be a bard in the 1600 having to deal with diabolus in musica.

Developer(+1)

Hahaha thank you! Yeah, it was a pain in the ass, having to avoid demons and shit and move a whole harpsichord! Make sure you boast your high score when you get to a satisfying level, the comments in the high score screen will help you understand when you should take a screenshot!

Cool game. I always like games where the music is part of the game play. The only critique I have really it the audio was loud an it would have been nice to have the ability to turn it down in game. The fact it got faster and faster was a challenge. Maybe a variety of music would be nice from each level also. Overall nice visuals and the game had no bugs. Good job!

Hark! th're beest demons haunting mine own harpsic'rd! I loved the unexpected part - it went from a simple beat game to a really challenging, unique experience. (Plus I got to listen to Canon in D which is always a bonus). One critique I have is that the level of difficulty went way up and resetting always put me back at level 1.  I would have appreciated a more gentle learning curve or at least a reset to the third level. I think you did a really great job with this, and the unexpected twist added a whole, awesome new complexity to the game. Great Job!

Developer

Thank you for the review! There actually is a reset to 3rd level but you have to go back to the menu to find it. Well, I guess I should make this option more obvious, especially since it's already there! Keep in mind if you want to play again, this option will be in the menu for you! ^^
