Lacking in polish, but that's understandable because of the short dev time. The art is definitely the standout aspect, but the writing is also entertaining.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing!  Some polish should turn up in a post jam release :) until then I'm very glad you found the art and writing to your liking ^_^

Nice game! I loved the art and the story was really cool

A little more indication of being hit / hitting the octopuses would be great, as it was a little tough seeing these things.

Overall, this is a really cool game!

Developer

Thanks gamer!  I'm glad you enjoyed it ^_^

I really liked the art style, those octopuses are cute. It was hard to read the text. The game window kept resizing.

The combat was surprisingly fun, but could use some work definitely. My game window kept resizing whenever I entered a new room, but nothing that can't be fixed.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing gamer!  I'm glad you had some fun ^_^ I did notice that about the game window, but didn't have time to dig into the cause... All ears if you've ever come across it and have an inkling what might cause it! (I'm suspicious it's in my camera code)

The art is cool. The banter with the machine is kinda fun. The sound is pretty weak though, and so is the gameplay. After a bit I realized I could just aggro the enemies and spam space to kill them. Maybe have the attack collider only be in front so at least your back in vulnerable. One tip that would have made the sound immediately better with very low effort is just having some room tone or looping ambient sound.

Hey thanks for the feedback!  Tbh the sound is nowhere near where I'd like it to be, the sound that is there has been very quickly reused from some other projects because I ran out of time to make anything.  There was some disappointing triage in the audio space :( I'll add some bits and pieces in for the post-jam.  I'm glad you enjoyed the art and characters at least!

What I liked:

  • The Art
  • The Atmosphere created by the sound effects
  • The simple but cool story
  • The enemy designs; The looked like something i don't want to have near me xD
  • the character controller

What I didn't like:

  • The Text being white on light background -> Fix: Add a black panel with opacity and rounded corners behind the text boxes.

  • Missing sound effects -> Fix: Add Walk and hit sound effects
  • The walk animation -> Fix: Add variations for walking up and down
Developer

Thanks so much for the feedback and suggestions!  The text is definitely a quick and easy fix, honestly I didn't think to test that part once the code for it was working...  Sound effects I didn't really have time for unfortunately but I really appreciate the suggestions ^_^ the up/down animations were just culled for simplicity but I agree they'd pull the quality up.  Thanks for playing :D

Very entertaining game! I really liked the art style it reminded me of of Hyper Light Drifter a bit.
The gameplay itself requires some polish but it still works as intended which is great.
The boss fight surprised me a bit but was fun
a good amount of content for a game jam.
Awesome submission!

Thanks so much!  I'm stoked that you enjoyed yourself ^_^ Hyper Light Drifter is huge praise, thank you!!!

Great fun :) Fantastic art! I really enjoyed the whole visual atmosphere, and the little heart animations stand out as a very cool little piece of polish I didn't notice at first. And really enjoyed the story/character side, especially after reading the last bit of text.
I agree with a lot of other comments, the two-swing attack idea wasn't totally clear, but I did realise the low swing (or backswing as I interpreted it) had a hitbox - and yup it's faster so optimal strats for killing baddies are stabbing the little fellas' toes with the backwards jab.
Oh and for me the difficulty balance was just right to be casual but not easy. So I guess we've got a goldilocks situation.

Anyway, thanks for a fun little game! 'Twas very cool.

Thanks gamer! <3  I'm so glad my efforts on the visual feel seem to have paid off ^_^ yeah in actual fact I was lazy with the attacking and the whole of the attack frames are a hitbox - so you'll do damage as long as you're attacking (regardless of which part of you hits the enemy).  I think visually that just isn't making the most sense since it subverts expectations a little.

But maybe it's also not so bad when standing still?  And in that case simply adding a running attack animation might fix things?  I'll have to play around with it and get some more feedback :)

I think you're right about the difficulty - it certainly seems to be getting views on both sides!  Which would suggest it's either the ideal mid point - or very close to it...

You're most welcome - I'm stoked you had fun ^^
