Hi, I have enjoyed this AVN for a long time. But I noticed the Eternum references during this most recent release. I hate Eternum so I nearly quit immediately.

Please keep in mind that when you choose to reference someone elses IP, not everyone loves the same things and it could cost you. Even if it is just the support of someone as insignificant as myself.

Just curious, what about Eternum did you not like?

I was once a fan of Eternum and Caribdis. I noticed after some time that with each release that the Dev time was longer and longer. I added it all up and worked out that it was taking over 6 months for each release, which in my opinion was way too long.

I was a paying customer through Itch.

I asked why. I got no response. I got angry with being ignored and started acting out. I got blocked. Now I will oppose Caribdis in all things.

So in the end the reason I dislike Caribdis and Eternum is a mix of long dev times and poor customer service.

masterpieces take long to be developed!

I understand, it's taking waaaay too long to the updates, but when they come out... Oh boy, a man can only dream!

last eternum update was dope!

and please man, don't associate different developer's work, they are not the same and your opinion on one's shouldnt affect the work of another!

reconsider your thoughts, please!

You didn't change my mind but thank you for your kindness.

we can only recieve kindness through giving kindness!

but really, reavaluate your opinions, Eternum is probably the best game of the genre by far, picking battles you can't win will only make your next experiences be frustrating. Let the hate go away, my friend, embrace the love and the message of the games, not what you think of the dev.

It's fair to be impatient, though I have no experience in making this kind of thing  so I can't comment on the speed in which these VNs are being made. However, I think the stories they tell and the emotions they create are worthwhile enough.

It seems that all VN studios that create quality work take time, and burnout is a cruel maiden. As long as these stories are given the opportunity to be concluded, I don't mind waiting.

Hopefully you find a dev/dev-team that suits your pace, have  a good one!

Managing customer expectations is very important when it comes to purchasing an expectation of work. Were you misled into believing the development times would be notably shorter than they turned out to be, or do you simply 'feel' the development times were too long? The former would be the fault of the creator and I would expect this to lose them some customers, while the latter would be the fault of you for asserting an expectation based on nothing.

There was actually a poll on Patreon a long while ago where Cari put on a vote whether he should go for longer dev times with meatier content or keep the shorter dev times which Cari was using at the time (3-4 months per update). Guess which option won?

Eternum is okay from my point but this much hate that you almost quit... Why?

(1 edit) (+7)

This is one of the oddest comments that I have ever read lmao. To be so sensitive as to complain about a reference to something you dislike and even threaten to quit because of it.

I can't even imagine what it is about Eternum that results in such a fit of rage for you lol. And you say that it could cost NiiChan? I'm sure that they will recover from the single person who would get this annoyed over a reference. Oh, the humanity!

(-15)

This is the sort of thing that motivates me to hate Devs too. A fanbase that just loves to mock anyone that does not agree with their point of view.

(+6)(-1)

It's not the dev's fault whatever issue you have with caribdis. You yourself said you acted out, so were you being an asshole? Maybe that's why you got blocked.

(1 edit) (-9)

I am sure I was an arsehole at one stage. It certainly is why I was blocked.  Does that mean I should be ignored, my concerns ignored? Even when I had calmed down?

Thats bad customer service. When a customer is angry you attempt to deescalate, not ignore. Ignoring a customer is only going to lead to further escalation.

I also never said anything about it being NiiChan's fault. NiiChan is not responsible for anyone's behavior except his own. But he did reference Eternum, he has linked his story to Caribdis' story. That has consequences and I am sure that he will reap more positive ones than negative.

As I said, my opinion is of little consequence. Does that mean I should just shut up? I think I should speak up as often as possible, try to hold these Devs to a higher standard, especially since there's money and art involved.

(+11)(-1)

You sound entitled as hell to begin with. You would probably receive more positive interactions with developers if you weren't being so negative or backhanded.

Telling NiiChan you hate Eternum to the point of almost wanting to quit immediately seems more like a personal issue.

Do better.

(+4)(-1)

I don't have a problem waiting 6 months, but maybe that's just me. You had bad customer service as a payer? Fair enough, I won't speak on that. But now the problem is you come off as entitled and petty regarding MBML. "That has consequences" What consequences are you going on about? You act as if this is some big controversy. You're the first person I've seen that's had so much dislike for Caribdis. I'm not saying you're unjustified for that, but your anger at the Eternum reference is. (This is also not the only game with an Eternum reference that I've played).

You're basically saying: I'm not going hold Niichan responsible for Eternum but I'm going to hold Niichan responsible for Eternum by almost quitting their game.

It's not about having opposing viewpoints. You can hate Eternum all you want for all I care. It's the complete lack of logic behind your initial comment is what I find absurd lol.

You said that a simple REFERENCE got you on the verge of quitting. Not like an incite of hate speech or some personal attack. A simple reference to another work. A work which has nothing offensive in it to warrant such a reaction. It's like if you hated broccoli and threatened to break up with your partner for even saying the word again lmao.

And what I found even more hilarious is your second paragraph. You make it seem as though the decision to refer to another AVN has catastrophic effects on the developer's following. Again, utter hilarity.

(+18)

Okay, I will step down my professionalism for once.

Cari and I are good friends, and I take a small part in his game development. Does that make you hate me more? I take 3-5 months of development per update. Does that add to your rage? Hell, Caribdis put out more content than I did within that timeframe, so what are you yapping about?

Remember that I, even Caribdis, am not a triple-A game company. This means that we have our limitations and can't handle every single inquiry out there.

In our years of being in this industry, we've seen worse. Countless BS on the internet. Losing you, an insignificant individual, as per your words, will never hurt our egos if that's what you're aiming for.

If I want to, I will reference Eternum or any other games you hate hundreds or millions of times. Will I lose supporters or gain some during the process? I DO NOT CARE.

(-10)

Cool. Message received. I will shut up and never bother you or your space again.

Goodbye.

based developer

No, based profile picture you got there. XD

(1 edit) (+2)(-1)

I saw them bitching about this with the same copy pasted comments under Fates Collide. Chang from Eternum made a small cameo and this guy had a meltdown about it.

This is surprising and unfortunate to read.  Eternnum is objectively the best illustrated, written, choreographed, and plot-rich game in the genre and you're executing a personal vendetta against it because you let your impatience get the best of you, behaved poorly, and got yourself justifiably blocked.  To top it off, rather than look inwardly and expand the internal limitations that caused your predicament, you've doubled down on the pettiness and are now even allowing it to bleed into your interactions with a completely different developer.
I'd strongly recommend some daily self-reflection.
