I GOT GNOMED! OH GNO!

(1 edit)

First of all, thank you for playing Shade Strider and leaving such kind compliments.

I really enjoyed my time playing Forest of Calamity. I got heavy Paper Mario vibes from this, especially with the turn-based combat and the combat scene that reminded me of a theater stage.

Much of the artwork really made me warm and fuzzy. The castle was well designed, and you fit details onto it that made it feel truly alive -- a few animated details (flags waving, people bustling about) would be another nice touch if you continue working on the game.

Also, thanks to your art style, I felt the humor of the characters pretty intensely. They have so much personality and it's really endearing! The king is so goofy looking (which lends to his "incompetent" nature), the fox seems like a character I should probably be skeptical of, and I felt so bad for the poor goblin I slayed without the slightest hesitation -- was there an option for me to spare them? Another thing to tally in your win column is how well the forest background of the game blends seamlessly with the webpage's background. I don't want to take that for granted -- I really appreciate your attention to detail.

Boy, oh boy, that music was incredible! The boss soundtrack came out of nowhere and had no right to be so pumped. It absolutely slaps. There was so much tension there. Impending doom! Big bad boy! That, coupled with the screen shaking, made the game feel alive. More to that point, I would have loved to see your world-building in action with that opening cutscene. The text was interesting, and I think some background images or animations would have done that even more justice. I understand, again, that there is a time limit to this and I absolutely do not fault you for it. (It turns out that it was only displaying a black screen on Firefox, so I tried Chrome and it worked properly. I love the intro cutscene, great job!!!) Your team is creative and I want to see more of what you have to offer.

I can see your vision for how you want this to unfold, and I think you should absolutely pursue this further. If you are interested in finding a game artist, I would love to help you out in some capacity! But you don't owe me anything, and I hope that isn't an unwelcome thing to say. I just see so much personality in this game and it piqued my interest!

I want more. Jan and Annabelle, you have done a fantastic job and I am really charmed by this little game. Please keep up the great work, and remember that you're now officially game developers!

My partner Setteal (artist) and her teammate TehRyan (programmer, musician) submitted a game called Shade Strider. It's an "endless runner" game similar to Dino Run, and in the same genre as Temple Run and Jetpack Joyride

If a charming game like Shade Strider is something either of you would be interested in playing, you can check it out with the link below. It would mean a lot to me (and the developers of Shade Strider) if you left helpful feedback for them, as they are planning to continue this project moving forward. https://itch.io/jam/pirate/rate/2491872

Sneak peek

Okay -- as I promised, here are my thoughts on Beacon. I'm sorry it took me so long, I really wanted to give it my full attention.

More than as a couple, but also as a team of newly anointed  game devs (which is a title you've both earned), you just took your first steps down a promising path. I want to congratulate you both for deciding to compete in this game jam and acknowledge that, though it likely wasn’t easy, you followed through on this huge time commitment. Hats off to you. I am so proud of you both and have so much to say.

In roughly chronological order, these are some of the many things I enjoyed:

- Controller input and keyboard input both worked. Way to go, Xelti!

- The magical particles in the tile sets, the cape swaying as Mote walks, and the little amulet Mote wears were details that all felt special.

- The music reminds me of my fond time with Minecraft and its peaceful setting. It's akin to discovery and calm, for me. Love, love, love it.

- The glowing plants were a special touch. Not only do they remind me of one of my favorite flowers -- Lily of the Valley -- they also act as information sign posts, akin to a wooden medieval sign.

- The shadow monsters look so goopy and creepy! I just animated a similar looking creature, and it sure was hard work even drawing just a few frames. I can see the vision for what they might look like in the future with more time to animate them, and I think they’re a great starting point! Can’t wait to see how your creatures evolve.

- THAT BEACON LOOKS INCREDIBLE! The inspiration from “Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee” is shining (no pun intended) through its design and absolutely nails that “tribal” aesthetic. That is a stylistic choice I believe you should absolutely run with. Seeing more assets like that would totally add to this atmosphere and there are so many engaging directions you could take that in when worldbuilding.

- The howling wind sound effect that you hear on the top of that hill was also a nice touch – it was an audio indicator that I was at a high elevation.

- The tall shadow creature’s design is so fun. And the hug was so special, eyes closing and everything – great job on the animation, Chelly! I’m assuming this creature is the “keeper” of the beacon? You nailed the cool factor when the beacon keeper poured out of the inside of the beacon as the player approached. It even seems to return to its container after you walk away. There’s a chance I misinterpreted that, and that animation is just the beacon turning on and off, but I choose to interpret it the other way. Xelti, great work on coding that encounter! Animation and coding go hand in hand for much of your game, and your teamwork especially shines through at the top of that hill. It’s soooooo cool

- Through the NPC dialogue, I could see what you described in your game design document being reflected in the world. I think continuing that narrative would be fruitful. Imagine if the other citizens are not only complacent with their suffering and sadness (since they’re not actively doing anything to fix their situation), but actively fight YOU to prevent you from ending it for them. Change is difficult, and some folks would rather leave things as they are – even if that leads to their continued suffering.

Are you planning on implementing fighting mechanics similar to those in Hollow Knight? I am completely aware and understanding of the limitations of the game jam, so this is more about my curiosity and continued interest in the development of your game. I enjoyed Hollow Knight so much and played it at a time in my life when I needed to hear messages like the one you ended the game with: “Always share your light with others when you have light to spare. No one is alone…”. This is such a heartfelt way to send off your players, and it truly meant a lot to me. I will always welcome games like Beacon that tug on your heart strings just enough. And with that, I leave with you a final bit of encouragement: pursue this dream of yours, and don’t be afraid to take the next steps. You’ve already come so far!

This hits hard

I absolutely had to master it – took me several tries to get a perfect score on the Yayometer© and empower those old folks!

The music slapped, the pixel art is incredible, the game is easy to understand and play, and the attention to detail in the background (while difficult to focus on while hunting that sweet high score) was humorous and well-executed

Nice job Devrique, Eliimperio, and Jacob! You all did a thing, and you earned a fan out of me (batteries not included)! WOO HOOOO!

Exhibit A:

Exhibit A

I can't put into words how blown away I am with this game. From the moment I heard the music and saw the little bee keeper's hood bobbing around, I wore a smile from ear to ear. I mean, this was a tremendously enjoyable experience for me and I almost never play games like this. Nathan and Justin, you knocked this one out of the park. This has so much character, so much charm, and a ton of potential. I could see myself playing a fully realized version of this game for dozens of hours -- heck, I even played this one for far longer than I imagined I would. I couldn't play this game, enjoy it as much as I did, and then neglect to leave words of affirmation and validation for you both. So here's to you! You did it, and you did it so well!

- charming
- relaxing
- unique
- enticing
- creative
- so much more!

My partner, who submitted a game called Shade Strider, would absolutely adore this game. I linked Bee's Bring Life to her on Discord and raved a good bit about how much I like it. This is right up her alley, and similar in style to a game about homesteading which she has been silently developing for years.

If you are interested in reviewing her and her teammate's addictive and charming "endless runner" game, please give Shade Strider (by TehRyan and Setteal) a try: https://itch.io/jam/pirate/rate/2491872

This is a quirky concept that has a lot of potential! I want to take the time to congratulate you on bringing this to the finish line, especially for your first time coding! I found your art charming and weird (in a good way) and I spent a good amount of time playing.

After playing, I realized that I am absolutely terrible at moving two things at once. But I did have the best luck moving both hands together, side by side, at the same time. That allowed me to be a little more efficient. I also tried alternating between hands -- one goes out to grab fruit, while the other hand brings back fruit that has already been grabbed.

All in all, I think you did a great job, Mexalen! Go make more stuff!

Here’s to Shade Strider and its creators, TehRyan and Setteal! Congratulations!

Setteal, I am so proud of you for taking this leap into the unknown and putting your art out there. Finishing this Shade Strider demo is an enormous accomplishment on so many levels, and I am so thrilled that you decided to compete. I saw the effort you put in, day in and day out, pulling all-nighters, collaborating with your teammate to make this fantastic game.

You have always been a capable artist, and this proves that your inner doubter is categorically wrong. Look at how many assets you made in such a short timeframe and look at how many skills you polished through your hard work! You cannot deny how much you’ve grown as an artist and game designer. Way to go!

TehRyan, I also want to validate you for your hard work and dedication to Shade Strider. Without you, it would not have been a complete game! You could not have been a better teammate for Setteal, and you clearly poured your all into this game. By playing off of each other’s strengths, you two produced something truly special and fun to play.

Ya'll have accomplished so much in the last two weeks. The passion and dedication shines through the finished product, and I believe Shade Strider’s players will see that too. This game has a healthy dose of personality and liveliness, and I can’t wait to see how you take that to the next level as this project continues to develop. You two are rockstars!
