Thanks for this feedback.  I have uploaded a JPG version of the zine and the bookmark - hopefully this clears up the text/picture problems.  Let me know if you still would like a text version.

You can make a character just for the purposes of this game using any rule-set - so long as they have a Name and some HP you can see how long they last. (no gaming group needed)

Thanks for this feedback.  Upon reflection it did need to be expanded!  There have been substantive details added to the end-game in the second version (V2).  Check it out.  I would be interested to hear what you think.  

Thanks for this feedback.  It was just what I needed to see a way to improve the game.  Check out the V2 file which now include progression in the form of updates and a prompt about when to end play.  

I was on vacation for a few weeks and returned to a bunch of really great comments that got me to re-think and update this game.  Check out version two.

Here are some responses/ideas:

I love the quiet year/deep forest - definitely inspired me.

I wanted this to be a tool for visioning concrete, positive, local change.

I included wizards so that players would feel powerful, and changes would happen by magic - negating self-editing thoughts around feasibility and self-interest of powerful groups.

This game assumes that people do know their community well enough to know where the problems lie, or would be interested enough to find out.

This was meant to be GM-less, all players control a wizard and collaborate on using magic to affect change.

This was designed to be deadly and unfair; I imagined that people would want to home-brew it to be easier to survive capitalism.

I hadn't though about contextualizing it to cover a wide range of countries/currencies.  Feel free to alter some of the numbers and entries to whatever best fits your context:   ex. Purchased from corporate chain -2HP/ (hourly salary) OR Paid rent -2HP(Weekly income) OR My local environment degraded by multinational corporation -3HP, etc.

In terms of balance - if you are exploited by capitalism, then your character should be on the verge of dying, and you should have good alternatives to move to.

I currently live in a land where most industries/sectors are dominated by a few corporations and consumerism reigns, but I am heartened to be reminded that there are other places with different ways of living (including some I've lived in).

I was in a funk, grinding through a long term project and when I saw this game jam it instantly sparked a great idea and several others followed - even some non-menu related ones.

Definitely looking forward to submitting some menu inspired TTRPGs.

I like the idea of scoring puns and having them count towards defeating the current scenario (as hit points and damage).

I'm going to think about how to incorporate having the heroes lose and making room for a last, great line to go out on.

Here are some ideas (not fully understanding or meaning to address your specific issues):

The main rule is turn taking. During the GM’s turn they put forth challenges and explain them. The player’s turn is to say what their character is doing to the challenge and draw something to represent that action. And then, the GM describes the consequences of that action.

-Perhaps getting your child to explain not only what he is doing for his action, but also what he expects the outcome of the action to be, will give you some hints about what he is trying to achieve, and what consequences to describe for the action.

-If your child’s goals for the challenge are not too dissimilar to your own, then the consequence of an odd Action could be to reveal something about the challenge to give him clues about what to try next.

-Go with it. This is designed to be a minimal game, and it admittedly relies upon tropes of the genre it is set in to understand how to move forward. The scenario on the back assumes the players will want to survive the dark forest and clear out the dungeon. If the adventure consists of making friends in the forest and making a cool club house out of the dungeon, that is way better.

-Another way to engage. Perhaps your child would like to take on the role of the GM? You could model interactions with the challenges he puts forth.

My main design goals were; to get people to draw and have fun, and maybe end up with a cool artifact to capture what happened during a gaming session (inspired by ‘the deep forest’/’the quiet year’). It was also meant to be open and free form.

I appreciate how it generates so many flavorful ideas - for individuals, the region and upcoming adventures.

I like how there are multiple hooks for possible scenarios - one in the town trouble, and also from the mission generator.

I love to roll dice too.

Here’s an optional dice mechanic.

Player describes intended Action and draws it on the Challenge.

Player Rolls a 1D6 to determine effectiveness of Action:

  • 1- No, GM describes how it fails to have intended outcome.
  • 2- Yes, but GM describes one complication.
  • 3,4- Yes, but other players describe one complication.
  • 5- Yes, it worked.
  • 6- Yes, and Player describes how epic it looked.

D8's are non very common, and I would not want sourcing any to prevent people from trying this game.

There are dice rollers online that one can use in a browser.  If google is how you search, then there is an interactive dice roller that comes up at the top of the search results, when you search for 'd8,' '1d8' or 'dice roller'.   Admittedly, this is less immersive.

Wonderfully specific, thanks for sharing and reflecting upon your experience.

I will try to incorporate this as advice for larger groups, and also as a variant for play.

I'm excited to hear that there your group was able to generate an interesting world to interact with and have fun in.

I would be interested to hear what limitations you feel might be helpful.  OR if there is a prompt that I could include to advise players, about what sort of information to write down so that these details are more obvious and that people fell their creative offerings are not being overlooked.
