I believe it should, yeah. The tpatch stuff uses a replacer function internally, so I don't forsee issues. If it does break let me know.

I'm actually closing in on finishing the translation pass of the first episode of the dragon set of VNs. The speed read of all six of them is done, so I have enough context to get the names, pronouns, and context right in the first one. Some of the Japanese in there is pretty tricky to turn into English manually too, so I had to spend a few days thinking some of the lines over.

Also, there's a VN/RPG hybrid I'm thinking of translating. It does have an official translation, but the devs admitted that it's raw DeepL. The original language is in Simplified Chinese, which I don't know as well as Japanese, so if I offer my own translation of that one, it will be a mix of my own MTL, the official TL, and some small dictionary usage. It also took a good week or two for me to construct a program that can get my translation in there, and make it easy enough for other people to install such a patch.

Also, I've been playing a bunch of automation games recently. They help me think over some of the tougher bits of translation. I've actually released a related mod on Steam for Word Factori recently called Japanese Kana.

I think it's technically possible - translating RPG Maker usually involves editing some clear text json files. However, RPG Maker is harder to fully translate than TyranoBuilder, since RPG Maker allows a lot more branching. It's a lot easier to miss something.

I'd say start off with the Charon games that look interesting, although Dice Psycho should be played after Menherafflesia. Otherwise, play in release order.

Maybe some of the really early ones like Menherafflesia and Princess Cage. I definitely know I made a couple blunders translating some of the lines in those. The more recent ones, like Paranoia Zanatorium, should be close enough to what a manual would create - my dictionary use is much heavier around that period, though not total.

Right now, I'm gathering cliff notes on a dragon-related series. Making cliff notes should be particularly speedy since the goal is to get a summary of each of the story scenes, in order to map out the general story structure - it's very important for catching any foreshadowing. Once I've got that handled, I'll get to manually translating its Episode 1. I'm tempted to replace some of the backgrounds it uses, since some of the default backgrounds used could look out of place. I should come to a decision on the backgrounds once I have the cliff notes done.

Ah, ok. I'll keep it in mind, though I'm currently focused on a certain dragon-related series that I've had eyes on for awhile. I'm going to see how my translation methodology works on the longer stuff.

Ah. The issue with the Mikoto Remake is that it's in Chinese Simplified - I would have to make an edited MTL of it. I also have a strong suspicion that it's the original game, but translated into that other language, considering the Japanese Charon didn't offer a Japanese language option.

I might do a translation if the remake is known to have some upgrades over the original.

I think this patch should work with that March '24 version. The March '24 version is the Simplified Chinese edition. My patch applies an idempotent edit to the VN to turn it into English, so it should work with both editions, provided the March '24 edition truly is just a translation.

The re-release is a rewritten version - an alternate continuity, in other words. I believe both versions had the same characters, though the old one was incomplete.

No, the Atsumaru version is gone for good. It was some other version of the game that was deemed non-canon.

I don't think you can do it through the VN. However, you should be able to lower the volume on Win10 by doing Speakers -> Volume Mixer -> Bloodstained Flowers (VN needs to be open) -> Adjust the volume.

Note that this is for you alone, though. If you're planning on streaming it somewhere, you'll have to edit the volume in editing yourself.

I've been taking some extra Japanese lessons over the past month to improve my reading speed. Fascinating stuff.

I've got some other VNs on the pipeline. I've decided on which Charon VN I want to translate, though I'm only about 1/6th done with the translation pass. There's also a vampire VN and a VN about a crazy town that I'm much further along with, though the editing passes for those will take a bit.

Still, I'm happy to hear I'm getting better. :)

Well if Freem isn't an option, there is chance of a variant of Notepad or VSCode or Notepad++ or some other text editor working. What's important is that the other parts of the executable must not be corrupted upon saving - only the part that needs the extra character. Only then will the executable decide to look at the extracted files instead without instantly crashing.

The VN should look to use loose files instead as long as the characters are messed up in there. Copy-pasting a character in there should be able to do it.

Overwriting the data folder can be accomplished by drag and dropping the whole data folder on top of the existing data folder.

GARBro functions by pulling the VN assets right out of the executable. By extracting said assets next to the executable, and by making the assets stored inside the executable unreadable, the VN can be forced to read the extracted assets instead.

The Freem method is the preferred way to do it without hassle, since the assets are given as loose files.

Unlike Charon's other works, you have to buy Paranoia directly from Charon's Fantia. I haven't gotten around to making my account there yet - I'll probably need to make a separate guide in the install instructions for how to legitimately buy a copy, since there's a good chance people might get confused.

It's possible, though I've got a backlog of other VNs to handle first.

I might do that recommended OverFlowers one while I'm doing the mental hospital one. The translation passes for the hospital one will probably take a bit, so I might switch over to the OverFlowers one in between.

  • Yes, Shiniisogu bokura came out in August 2023. The leads seem interesting - there's a good chance I'll translate it, though there are some other VNs of interest I want to finish up first.
  • Yona Yona seems to have something interesting involving a crane going on, though the setup at the start feels like straight up BDSM nukige. I might return to this one later, though I'm not really sure.
  • I bought Yanderain, though I haven't begun trying to translate it yet.
  • Paranoia is annoying to get. I might do it later once I buy a copy; don't know.

I can't reveal precisely what the VN I'm working on is at the moment, though from what the Japanese Let's Players say, it seems to be ~3h long. It also seems that a Japanese VTuber - Chiruhi - did a Let's Play on this particular one. The denpa elements in it look interesting, and the skull Joker-like character in it is pretty funny, so I feel there's a good chance I'll finish translating it.

Ah, that one. I've considered translating some of OverFlowers' work, though I haven't decided yet.

I'm thinking of translating Shiniisogu Bokura, though I'm not entirely sure yet about finishing it. I considered translating Yona Yona, but there's a very notable amount of BDSM eroge in there. I might return to it later - not sure.

What currently holds my focus right now is a particular VN set in a mental institution. The creator seems to be interested in putting the VN on Steam, but it doesn't seem to be released there yet. Despite that, there are copies available on NovelGame and Freem, so getting a copy is no problem.

The result file should be about 663,239 KB big.

The original file should be a file said to be modified on 2/21/2022 10:37 AM (UTC -6) with an approximate size of 661,963 KB.

I double checked the download provided by Freem just now, and that should have the original app.asar file you want.

The result file absolutely must be named app.asar and be placed inside that resources folder, where the original app.asar used to be.

If that doesn't work, are you able to provide more details on which part doesn't match up?

Original/Source File: The app.asar provided in your download of the VN.

Patch: The xDelta file I provided.

Destination File: The location of the new file that will be created.

Think of it like this: The VN creator gave you the original file. I gave you the file that can tell xDelta how to turn the original file into the translated file. You must inform xDelta what these two files are, so that it can build the translated file.

I am. I did my translation pass up to the start of the 3rd chapter at this time of writing, actually.
There are a TON of cameo appearances in it. Pretty much anyone in a work Charon made in 2017 or earlier shows up for at least a few minutes. When I release my patch, I'm planning to compile a list of all the works referenced.

How does that make sense? Is it simulating the player character getting fatter, thus requiring more calories?

I'm thinking of either 残余の羊 or しにいそぐぼくら . Not sure yet, though it will probably be the cream one.

There's a bit of a hacky way to do it, though this should do the job:

  1. Acquire a method to unpack an asar file:
    1.  The 7zip plugin to open asar files can unpack specific portions of interest: https://www.tc4shell.com/en/7zip/asar/
    2. Alternatively, you can try to unpack it by using the node.js asar package.
  2. The file of interest is {asarRootFolder}/data/system/Config.tjs
  3. Text speed is the value "chSpeed". 30 is the default. Lower values mean faster speed.
  4. Overwrite the Config.tjs in the patched app.asar, and you should be good to go.
  5. Full screen is tougher. If you try to force fullscreen you're going to get black bars on the sides of the screen.
  6. If you want to resize the window on startup to something custom, you can open up the file {asarRootFolder}/data/scenario/first.ks, edit the line that has window.ResizeTo() that does NOT have a semicolon at the start of the line to your preferred resolution, and repack that into the asar file. Take note that the resolutions used by resizeTo are inaccurate, so that's why I used the original width and height to set the desired resolution.

Yeah, the font is too tiny, and I want to make good use of the extra space.

Also, you can drag the edge of the window if you need to make it smaller. I did that at first so I could read the text until I found out how to change the resolution on startup.

I've also gone ahead and made a quick alternative patch that features the original resolution, if that's preferable.

Which part of the game is best to go afk for the event you mention?

Edit: Nevermind I gave it a try. A minigame pops up after around 3 minutes.

If you use freecam, she's got a really creepy smile when she's leading you to the bathroom, too.

Haven't heard of that one - I'll definitely look into that.

I've also found a 7zip plugin that looks like it can open asar files like a zip.

I'll have to think about which one is better for the user - looks like each option would have a different distribution method.

I might do the ghost one, but probably not the hokoro one for a while. I looked at what it has, and Hokoro has a ton of images and its overall super short.

There's also a few sci-fi ones I'm thinking of translating, though I found a good chunk of the VNs there use app.asar for resources. I don't really want to distribute a repackagaed app.asar myself since the creators would get really mad, so I might demand the user use a special node.js utility to get their game patched.

No, I mean it uses characters [0-9a-f]. Basically using the base 16 number system instead of the base 10 number system we usually use.

Speaking of which, using hexcodes combined with GUIDs might be better so it's easier to transfer to paper. Gets hard to break the hascodes into chunks.

Probably. I accidently got burned out for a few months. Also got real life stuff to deal with.

I'm probably going to hold off on this particular one for a bit. I've looked around on NovelGames for the past months looking for neat VNs, and found a few. There's one I've actually finished the first pass on (Nobody Can Kill Them), though I haven't had the time to do an editing pass yet.

I've got the first module of Depersonalization done, though I'm waiting on putting it up on the Steam Workshop. Devs claim they're going to do an update on the 5th, so much of my focus will be set on that when the update arrives.

The codes should be hexcodes tbh.

Depersonalization. The official translation is just barely above raw MTL - it's very tough to read unless you've got experience reading things via Google Translate. The devs are very much not native English speakers.

Fixing it's translation is a bit tougher since, unlike VNs, lines can be out of order, and finding context is harder. I've got the first ten minutes (the castle section) updated with a better English translation, I'm hoping to push out a release once I finish the entire prologue story, with a sizable chunk of menu and combat text being updated as well.

Amusingly, the first ten minutes has a surprise guest appearance from SCP-3999. :D

I'm thinking of the paid Dice Psycho. I've been testing out a new feature I made for it.

I am, looks like it will be a quick one from playtime mentioned in the reviews. Right now I'm busy with Princess Cage, I've got about 2/3 of it TL'ed. That one's taking a bit because it wants some culture context Westerners probably won't have, and I want to ship the completed TL in one release. :p

I believe so, yeah. The DLSite version should use the same assets and references, so it should work perfectly, based on the file structure of other Charon works I've bought from there.

Only way it won't apply in some form is if they changed the projectID in data/system/Config.tjs to something else - I can guide you if for some reason the patch doesn't work out of the box. Then I'll put up a revised DLSite patch for that particular case.

If that "Charon Limited Bonus" is Extra content, then that probably won't translate with the patch. Though that seems to be a wallpaper, so it probably wouldn't be seen by the patch anyway.

If you need a bigger window, you can grab the sides of the window and drag, though if you want actual fullscreen, Borderless Gaming should do the job. Though no matter what you do, it looks like the resolution won't change.
