Download the demo - it's still the full version

End of October and it's clear I need at least another month to complete the conversion of controls. I've wasted a lot of time exploring various dead ends and I'm still not entirely positive about the current keyboard control integration. Moving items in inventory will be a challenge.

Devtober 2024 community · Created a new topic Prospector

Hello everyone, I'm joining again this year with my lifelong project https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector

This round I'd like to focus on the X-Box conversion. It means to completely rework the RTS-style controls for console controllers.

Good luck everyone!

Hi, get the latest version of Prospector! https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector Follow me here on Itch and on https://twitter.com/MathiasKaindl  or https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@MathiasKaindl and hopefully very soon here https://store.steampowered.com/app/2755300/Prospector/.

Prospector is a 2/3D mix of Fallout 1, Anarchy Online, Dune 2 and Jagged Alliance 2. Content is still limited but already offers 30+ hours of gameplay.

You will explore the area around your landing shuttle, fight enemy drones, mine resources, craft new equipment and  customize your drone to be ready for next tasks etc.

The last few updates have focused on core game mechanics, like explosives, shields, weapons, buildings etc. I'm also planning to finish the remaining mechanics like executing programs (magic) and map traveling with random encounters. Please download the demo and let me know what you think.

I remember it always happened without my input, usually after an enemy turn. I will try to replicate it tonight. It's minor issue, you can click the red cross button to get back.

It's probably just me, but it would be more convenient to be able to click anywhere in the red rectangle. I'm the king of misclicks, so anything that helps counts :)

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Most of your recommendations are on the todo list, so it's great to have them validated this way! I'm still working on the mechanics so I haven't had time to work on the story yet. Assuming my future players will not read this, I can reveal here that the ship didn't arrive at the trading post, it's been sitting there for several thousand years :)

trying to attach the black screen snapshot

I was surprised by the completeness and depth of this game. Despite the complexity of the gameplay, I was able to understand the mechanics very quickly thanks to the detailed tutorials. There are a few minor issues and potential improvements:

  • hit test in upgrades screens are smaller than selection boxes, e.g. you need to click the planet icon to select it, not the area that is then selected
  • similar issue, hit test of the lever in puzzle with torches, only the upper part is clickable
  • when building rooms, the menu that lists items to build could use a background to improve the visibility
  • encountered a black screen several times during combat, unfortunately, I can't reproduce it
  • probably just my preference, but I would enjoy the outerworld more if I could choose where to go myself, like travel to one of the planets, walk around a static map to find & pick specific encounters

It's worth mentioning that I've only spent 6 hours playing, so I probably don't have a complete picture of the game yet. By the way, I like the defensive version that starts with three 0's:)

No need for keys, download the demo, it's the full version

Hi, get the latest version of Prospector! https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector Follow me here on Itch and on https://twitter.com/MathiasKaindl .

Prospector is a 2.5D mix of Fallout 1/2, Anarchy Online, Dune 2 and Jagged Alliance 2. Content is still limited but it already offers 10-20 hours of game play.

You will be exploring the area around your crashed shuttle, fighting enemy drones, mining resources and crafting new gears, customizing your drone to be ready for next tasks etc.

Last two updates focused on UX. Majority of UI was reworked - new dialogs, popups, etc. Several temporary assets were replaced.

Short term, I will be adding new area with underground military base, protected by more challenging enemies. Then I will finalize program specializations using patterns in memory modules and I will introduce shield effects in combat.

Please download the demo (it's still full game) and let me know what you think.

Nicely made instant action game! Difficulty feels to be just right. Is there another level after the asteroids? My best score is:

Thanks! This is excellent and valuable feedback. Unlocking recipes makes perfect sense, since I abandoned the original factory concept of the  game. The new tooltip shows the item type, including the blueprint type, but this area definitely needs more care. The machinery in particular is quite old and unsightly. Olivine and pentlandite ore needs to be mined in "Mine" or in "Caves":

Thank you for playing/testing the game!

Download the full version using the Download demo button and unzip the game folder. See videos on my channel in case you get stuck: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnjaegIp4BBDFDOTSpuNWwQ. It's still early version, but there is already enough content for several hours of game play.

Please use the Download demo button, it's the same version :)

Obviously, I need to set "I apologize for your frustration" as an auto-reply.)

The game is as much about crafting as it is about exploration. However, it is a very early version and some game mechanics are still missing. Hopefully after the integration they will close the current gaps in the game.

Miners mostly allow you to mine and explore at the same time. The ROI is already there for some resources, in the added value when crafting the resource into more valuable chemicals/items. You usually want to construct it on top of a "glowing" resource.

One thing to rush for is the repair nanobots - to keep you alive long enough to defeat bosses. Current game content culminates when you incarnate and defeat your own personal boss. I will be adding more content soon!

Thank you so much for playing the game and posting the feedback!

Hi, check out the latest version of Prospector! https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector

Follow me here on Itch and now also on https://twitter.com/MathiasKaindl for more progress details.

It's a 2.5D open world role-playing game with crafting and action. Last two updates added quest and mission mechanics as an alternative way to acquire resources.

Over the holidays I focused on game UX, reducing design debt a bit. I reworked the rendering pipeline to support post-processing effects. Read the devlogs for a full list of changes.

Tree with gift box, new HUD style:

Effects in dialogs:

Combat:

Another example of an auto-generated mission area:

Added walls, doors, enemies, boss and chests. The entire mission is shrouded in fog of course.

(1 edit)

Turning the data from level generator into a dungeon. Rooms, corridors, entry point and lights done. Walls, enemies, doors, chests, exit and boss to do tomorrow.

New area next to vending machines with mission entrances:

And the link to the game :) https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector

Even more tweaks to level generator:

  • Red room = boss room, boss drops key to locked doors
  • Blue room = treasure room with locked doors (yellow cell)
  • Purple room - standard room with random encounters
  • White room - entrance room with exit (yellow cell)
  • Green cell - corridor

Next I need to generate the level and fill it with random content.

More fine tuning in the generator code and adding dead ends  (blue) - can be used for locked rooms:

Tweaking the algorithm a bit and adding "entrance" (yellow box) and boss location (red box):

Hi, joining this jam for the second time. Late as usual. My game is a long term project, I'm working on it over nights for quite some time already. The game is still for free (use the demo link). Check out the latest trailer:

I will use the remaining days to add a mission generator. The goal is to generate few rooms connected with corridors, an entrance, a boss and loot. This is what I have so far, visualized in debug layer:

Hello everyone, another update for this game is out. It's a top-down 2D game with a little bit of crafting, exploration, fighting, questing and base building. Please get it here, use the demo download link:

https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector

There are many improvements here and there. The game now updates the last few levels you have visited making the world feel more alive. Drones have a critical hit chance, and there is even an item that boost the probability. There is a new nano program to hit & stun enemies in selected area, guarded by a new boss of course :) Just a reminder, you can save & reload your game now!

I will use my twitter account to post latest news, please follow me there: https://twitter.com/MathiasKaindl

Last but not least, I practiced a bit and tried to compose another trailer with (borrowed) music, check it out!

Hi, there are two new updates to Prospector game, please get the demo (still the full game) here:

https://mathiaskaindl.itch.io/prospector

V0.13 added pocket bosses and building constructions, V0.14 allows saving/loading game progress. Since the game play time now attacks several hours, I pushed saving/loading games to the left in schedule. At the end, I'm glad I made this decision, because it turned out half of the game code was not ready for persistence.

The plans for other updates to come this year, I would like to focus on making the combat more attractive and adding some additional playable content.

Long term, I plan to include:

  • in-game level editor
  • farming
  • shields (only shield special effects are in-game atm)
  • program patterns  (to combine various programs and boosters using memory patterns)
  • in-game story animations
  • generated areas (for encounters, when using fast travel to distant locations)
  • shuttle mainframe enhancements

A little surprise, pretty tough, my highscore is 5029 after numerous attempts. The game still surprise me by a not yet seen enemy. Crashed when approaching a boss though:

Got executed hundred times :) Very nice adventure done in only two weeks, congratulations!

this was actually fun:)

Nice art! Adding to comments below:

- progress label is hidden by the bar

- it takes too long to pick up stuff

- when you filter items to craft, it shows even items I can't craft yet (it seems it includes items even if you have only some ingredients)

- it seems time does not actually pass when you craft

In top 5 of this jam! The difficulty is above my skill levels (A-5), but I appreciate it's always my fault. I will definitely get back to this after rating.

A lot of nice small details, I wonder if the story continues in the demo version? I got "accidentally" killed by the white-blue whirligigs.

Score 7 :)

The splash screen get stuck on my machine (windows10) until I close the game. Can play the game, just minimized in a corner so that the splash screen does not cover the game window :)

Another two updates for Prospector include day & time, contextual music, reworked nano-programs and consumables, numerous tweaks and enhancements. Check it out and leave me a feedback in comments!

Tweaking and debugging before uploading the final version. Can't wait to check out your games next week!

Final day & night in game:

Ancient devices in caves to incarnate powerful beings... to knock down and loot ;)
