In my experience it was only unsafe to save in the Hunter's Dream when the Doll was on the balcony, but it seems this was patched (I tested it a moment ago). It should now be safe to save in the Hunter's Dream wherever the Doll is.

As far as I know, a DS4 should work fine through Steam. The joysticks are not used - is that possibly what you're running into? If it is, you can use Steam to remap the controls if you want joystick movement.
Here is a simple remap if you want to try it:
steam://controllerconfig/bloodborne%20psx%20demake/2816129592
But I'd recommend messing around with your controller configuration until you find something comfortable for you. The configuration I personally use is more complex than the one I shared - it automatically holds the walk button when I only slightly push the left joystick; right trigger activates a macro that opens the menu, scrolls to right-hand weapons, transforms the weapon, and closes the menu; when I hold left bumper to bring up the gun cross-hairs, it makes the right joystick control the camera instead of the left ("aim down sights" camera controls work with the d-pad by default so you can aim up and down, where the normal camera, controlled by the triggers by default, cannot be aimed up and down); that kind of thing. If that interests you or anyone reading this, let me know and I can make a shareable version of that.
I hope the lack of joystick functionality is all it turns out to be and you don't need to go digging for another solution! I wish you luck, good hunter!
I used to Steam to basically map a macro to the right trigger. The macro
On press:
- Presses start
- Waits half a second
- Presses down
- Waits half a second
- Presses L1
On release:
- Waits half a second
- Presses start
I need to wait a moment before releasing the trigger so the final input doesn't get dropped, but it works. It takes at least 1.5 seconds but if I wait for the right opening I can get it off mid-fight.
I just need to be careful not to press and hold R2 when I'm in the menu because it will close the menu, turn the character toward the camera, and fire my gun hahaha
But yeah, I do agree it would be nice to open right up to the right-hand weapon.
I realized I didn't include the Flamesprayer in my list! You can get it by talking to Gilbert (the man at the window by the Central Yharnam lantern) after you defeat the Cleric Beast, but before you defeat Gascoigne. (It might technically be after you interact with the Great Bridge gate and before you interact with the Tomb of Oedon gate, I'm not sure what the actual triggers are.)
Does anyone know how to access the garden in the Hunter's Dream? The devlog for 1.04 reports that there is a teleport gravestone in a "Secret area," the image on the 1.04 devlog page shows this gravestone in the garden, and if you stand near the gate and skew your camera just right you can see it in-game.
The control scheme is not at all likely to be changed, and options for it are very unlikely to be added.
A way around this is to add the game to Steam, open Controller Configuration, change your left joystick input type to Directional Pad, assign the 4 d-pad buttons to the 4 directions, change your right joystick input type to Directional Pad, and assign Left Trigger to left and Right Trigger to right, leaving up and down blank.
I discovered a workaround for this. Going into the Audio settings (don't even need to change anything there) and selecting "Back" gets the game to save your settings. So make any changes to Graphics settings you want, select "Back," select "Audio," and select "Back." Your Graphics settings should save properly at that point.
This is likely an issue with Windows, not the game. When you plug in a new audio device (the controller has a headset jack, thus counts as an audio device), Windows thinks it's being clever and helpful by automatically switching your audio input and output to use the controller. It's a real pain, there's no way to turn off this "feature," and the only way to prevent Windows from switching to it every time you plug it in is to disable the device, either through Windows' Sound Settings or Device Manager. Luckily the audio portion of the controller can be disabled without disabling the controller itself.
There are no control settings in-game but if you're using a controller,
- Add the game to Steam
- Open Controller Configuration
- Select the Directional Pad
- Select "Mode Shifting"
- From the "Mode Shift Button" drop-down, select "Left Bumper"
- From the "Style of Input" drop-down, select "Directional Pad"
- Assign "DDN" to "D-Pad Up," "DUP" to "D-Pad Down," "DLT" to "D-Pad Left," and "DRT" to "D-Pad Right"
With this setup, any time you hold down "Left Bumper," your Y-axis will invert. It probably goes without saying, but you can also swap "DLT" and "DRT" to invert the X-axis. If you're using a keyboard, you may be able to accomplish something similar with PowerToys.
After some messing around, I found that the issue I was encountering when toggling the Arbitrary Limiters appears to extend to many, if not all, graphics settings when changed from the main menu, including the resolution (which I thought was working properly at first). I can change some of these settings by editing MainSettings.sav with a hex editor and the changes seem to stick, which leads me to believe that the game is not writing any changes to that file.
Some graphics settings are present in the character save files (maybe just the ones that are different from the default values, i.e. the ones that I changed?) but it may be preferable if they were saved exclusively in MainSettings.sav.
Some or all of the graphics settings from the main menu seem to not be saving properly (or possibly at all). I'm currently messing around with this so I can write a comment on the 1.03 devlog page (where I prefer to make note of bugs).
In my experience, if I toggle "ALL CRT FX" on/off from the graphics menu while you have a character loaded and then save at a lantern or the doll, this particular setting will be reflected at the main menu as well. Hopefully this helps in the meantime.
To stream on Discord:
- Open Discord settings
- Go to Activity Status under the header "Activity Settings"
- Beneath "No game detected," you should see "Not seeing your game? Add it!" Click on "Add it!"
- From the drop-down, select "BBPSX"
- Click "Add Game"
DO NOT enable the overlay. The game will not function if the Discord overlay is active. (At least this was the case with version 1.00; I haven't tested with the current version, 1.03.1)
You should now be able to stream the game as you would any other.
