Great OST! Lots of comments already said what I’d say, I’ll just add that I thought it felt very cute while still mysterious, which really compliments the JRPG vibe you were going for. Favorite track would be Real, love the gentle subdued humming. I think the high end in the mix could’ve been brought down a bit, there were a few spots where it sounded a bit shrill. Aside from that, excellent job Layla!

Aw thanks for listening! Those are synth instruments that I picked out from Ableton’s sound library, I searched for sounds that had a bell like quality and landed on those two sounds.

Thanks for listening to the whole thing!

Thanks for listening! Glad you liked the choir!

The breaks are great for this song! I like the variety of different timbre’s for this piece. I think each of the 4 sections of the song could’ve been halved to give the song more movement and have the drops hit harder. It’s hard for me to see how this fits with the theme of the jam, but I think the ideas are solid.

I feel “Above The Clouds” is a fitting title. Really like the consistency of the bell like timbre’s for this track. I like the synth melody around 1:23, it created a sense of movement in the song, but I found it was a bit too crisp and digital sounding when blended with the piano and bells from the beginning of the song. The strings around the 2:00 mark were a nice touch, but I thought they got pulled out too quickly at 2:15, it felt like an undeveloped idea. Overall I think this is a good song that could be developed some more to become a great song. Thanks for sharing!

This is a very pleasant and soothing piece. The instrumentation is mixed well and blends together nicely, although I found the overall mix to be a bit too quiet. The song could use more rhythmic variation to make it stand out after the initial melodic idea is established. Good job on this, keep it up!

I really liked the spoken word/singing part, I really felt like I was in a game during that part. Reminded me a bit of the narrator in the Bastian OST. Would be interesting to hear more songs in this musical showtune style matched with a game OST structure.

Aw thank you so much for taking the time to comment! We were going for music that was memorable and I’m happy that we achieved that for you! Earthbound was a favorite JRPG for me growing up, I’m seeing the connection now that you mention it. Glad you liked Bubble Waltz, I used my Ibanez 4 string bass with flatwound strings for that one, you can hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers influence in that piece.

Thank you for listening and for the feedback!

The picture for the jam reminded my team of the Studio Ghibli movie aesthetic, so we drew our inspiration from the music of those films. We aimed to make music that was dreamy, fantastical, playful, childlike. One goal I had for this jam was to experiment more with orchestral arrangements and make music outside of my rock/pop/electronica wheelhouse, so I emphasized variety in our OST. We decided we were going to use orchestral instrumentation and went for a breadth of different timbres. I tried to use a variety of drum sounds to fit the various moods, like jazz brush kits for the more downtempo tunes, some of the quirky drumkits in Ableton Suite like the water bottle kit, and taiko drum for the bigger sounding tunes.

My game compositions tend to be very melody and rhythm focused, so I usually try to get these components down first. I compose most of my music in Ableton’s session view. Usually I’ll start by creating a drumloop to establish the rhythmic feel of the song, and then I’ll try to come up with a melodic idea or a harmonic accompaniment that I will support a melody. Once I’ve built enough loops to establish different sections of a song, I’ll start copying and pasting those pieces into arrangement view and work on the layering of the instruments, transitions between sections, getting volumes and eq mixed properly, adding effects, etc.

I stream music production on my Twitch channel on the weekends, feel free to pop in to see what my process looks like!

There’s a strong sense of melody across all the songs. Minty The Fish was my favorite track, loved the glitch stutter at 0:14. I liked how the Minty race song kept the same melodic idea but repurposed it in a minor key with a faster tempo. Really liked the energy for Monster Bubble, but I found the major tonality of the melody clashed with the minor key accompaniment. Overall, this is a solid chiptune OST, you should feel good about how this turned out, well done!

Beautiful piece. This song has a nice blend of orchestra instrumentation with synth textures. I really liked how the square wave synth mixed with the flute and how the bit crushed drums bookended the transitions in the middle. Great job on this one!

Thank you so much for listening!
