Lots of lag in bigger maps (Gameplay issue, WebGL on ChromeOS)

The framerate drops off a lot when you load into this map (I think it's around 10-20 fps, assuming normal gameplay is 60 fps); is there any way for bigger maps to be loaded dynamically or something, so that less strain is put on the less than optimal system I'm using?

(Also happens in Big Town)

Developer

Thanks for the reports. I've got some optimization for the Deeps coming in the next update, but this is the first I've heard of it happening in Deep Town. I thought it was related to enemy AI but I'll rerun the profiler.

Does this happen continuously, or just for a few seconds when the level initially loads?

If it's continuous, it might just be an issue with the Chromebook not being able to render large areas, so I'll see if I can cut them up in the future.

wait: it seems to have gotten better after leaving and loading back into it

(deep town, i mean)

it used to be crazy, as if the deeps was still loaded along with the town. maybe that was what was happening?

(It is still bad though. that precision segment with the slime blocks had me close all my tabs and turn my input buffer down to 2, and it still took like 10 minutes to get past)

That's very strange, but the detailed reports help. Thanks!

No problem! As I progress through the game, I'll note out any more problem areas here, though I'm pretty sure it's tied to map size.

are u happy now...

Not really, Peridot from Homestuck Steven Universe.

It's continuous, and worse in Deep Town than in the Deeps. Places like the introduction area and the first shrine play w/o lag, though. (The very first scene has a little bit of lag, though.)

haha chromebook user

do you have anything running in the background? that could probably be the cause of the issue,

the unity webgl version of the game is also just very laggy in general, i have a fairly beefy pc and it struggles with that a lot

I would use literally anything else but this is what i got aaaaa

I normally have like, maybe around 5-10 tabs open while playing; there was one part in Deep Town where I had to close out all my tabs other than the one I was playing the game with in order to get past. I can't run anything else in the background: it's a web browser; not really an OS lol.

having tabs open in the background while you play is probably the cause of the issue, if any other applications are running other than the web browser as well, that might affect your performance

I know that, but even with everything else closed, it still is borderline unplayable in bigger maps. I think this is an optimization issue, rather than one that originates from me and me alone; although my low ram and poor processor on this Chrome OS piece of garbage is certainly not helping.

Sorry to hear that. I'm still working on the optimization patch, I wanted to bundle another larger code change with it which is taking longer than I thought.

Oh, DW about it! It's all good, and I don't mind waiting. Take your time :>
