same as most, mashing covered most of the mechanic. it could have also benefited of audio feedback a lot and maybe either show what spells it gives you clearly OR make it risk reward like a new book replace a spell cause your mind can only hold so much, so maybe you get a nicer or less nice one.

outside of that, the gameplay loop worked very well and it was definitely fun. one of my favs !

Developer

thank you very much for your feedback! we had wanted to put some audio in but none of us had worked with audio before so we focused mainly on art and gameplay loop. Still, I agree that audio and a bit more game feel would have gone a long way (definitely missing camera shake! )

I think the main thing that made this kind of boring to play for me was the lack of polish. Since there were no sounds, particles, effects, or anything, it made it feel way more uneventful and as if I had no impact.

I know those are the things that are very difficult to implement on time constraint, especially when content is technically most important, but it definitely made it less satisfying.

Otherwise, this is a great game. I agree with other people about how the books could be spell icons. Also, having to press E so much was sorta weird when both the other attacks were mouse buttons. The art is pretty nice (especially the brain).

Thank you ! :) yes we agree, I defiantly feel audio would have made a great difference in our project along with other game feel techniques, considering the time restraints we focused on each individual's main strengths in development but we would defiantly improve and re-work some features if we had more time thank you for playing :)

Probably the best theme implementation of the whole Jam!

Really enjoyed this, those red fast armored guys are fast! I had a problem with the first level they appeared I think it was level 6, Finally managed to do it only to die a couple of levels later to a massive Mage in a ?cave?.

Most of the things I would like to see improved upon have been mentioned before, as GarbageBunny69 said spell icons instead of books would be nice.

And I kinda ended up doing the same thing as shano19 just mashing all keybinds to remove the gimmick. I have no idea how that could be fixed tough.

Would have loved some sound :D

Overall Good job and thanks for making this.

Button mashing likely could have been fixed with some sort of mana system. or by using the same spell over and over you cast it slower or something, causing you to stop using it as much, but even without those challenges the game is still pretty difficult.

we in the team had loads of ideas for things we wanted to add into the game, but due to a variety of reasons (such as me having my wisdom teeth pulled during the jam). we had to limit ourselves into getting the game basic and working, and had to leave out some of the more time consuming features like better bosses, and more spells, and sound effects/background music.

Very nice game. The books were confusing and seeing spell icons would be nicer. Overall pretty cool game.

Neat game, I ended up mostly just smashing all keybinds as much as possible which kinda removed the gimmick. I think a mechanic preventing this would benefit the game a lot. Also, art is awesome!

What a cool concept, especially in terms of fitting the game jam theme.  I enjoyed the varied experience of the gameplay each time I played and not knowing what to expect.  The game is wacky, but because all of the elements are equally so, it's a very cohesive experience.

I like the use of the theme and the art is great.
