I loved this game, laughed many times while playing. Don't know that I would call this a roguelike, though. The time-based and accuracy-based typing challenges seem to run counter to Rogue's considered pace, and there is no discovery, exploration or itemization. Still, I really enjoyed it.
It's what I could deliver in 7 days, sadly. There are plans on expanding it re exploration, itemization and stats (while keeping it strongly timer-based). You can see some precursors of stats in the current "difficulty" paths, namely timer length and the amount of mistakes you can make. Also planned are some sort of time regeneration stat that will push against the timer the faster you type, and a way to regenerate hearts by various means (probably involving an attack that feeds on enemies).
Again, I think this game is amazing :-)
This seems like it'd be super fun, but for some reason my keyboard can't make the right apostrophe. I can just barely start the game before every option has an apostrophe I can't type for the life of me. Probably a regional thing (I'm from Brazil).
Looks awesome though!
The latest version should have included a fix for that... did you play the 1.01 version?
I'll look into it. You can also try to use the same key but with shift, this may work for you.
Yup, I played the 1.01. I really tried everything I could think of, including a test run on the tutorial using the "Let's go!" option as a test-bed to check every key/combination possible. It might have something to do with the fact that this particular character( ´ ) only shows when double stroked or when something else is pressed right after. But even then the game doesn't seem to register the first apostrophe anyway. It's really unfortunate but it is what it is.
This is unfortunate, and maybe has something to do with Brazilian keyboards being able to type apostrophes on vowels, so it doesn't know if you want to put a vowel accent or just the ' until u type it a second time?
Will mapping another character not currently used by the game to ' help you? Like, I can let the game accept ` as ' without affecting other players...
EDIT: Never mind all that I guess! It's a mapping issue. Apparently there was ONE bastard key I hadn't tested and it is the apostrophe I need. It's just mapped really weird on my KB. It's on the ( ~ / ^ )key.
Derp I'm dumb. :D

Yeah, it's probably something like that. And just to be extra clear about it, quotes( ' / " ) work single-stroked it's just ´ or ` that behave like that, because those would be the accents. So mapping it to ` would have the same problem. I can't seem to use single-quotes( ' ) in place of it, would that be by design or it's just my keyboard being wonky?
Ah, I'm glad it was solved, hopefully it's not too inconvenient and you can play the game like that.
I only tested it with regular English qwerty keyboard, didn't think of how many other configurations exist.
Super well done! The typing mechanic is fun and tense! The snake timer was an awesome touch. The longer, more risky to type attacks being more powerful was really clever.
What a neat game! I've always like typing games, and this one was no exception
The timer snake's changing colour as time runs out is a great detail that tells the player how much pressure they have without having to look away from what they are typing. Your sound effects are perfect, you can actually feel your heart drop when the whiff plays.
There's also just something perfect about the fight descriptions. Like getting waylaid by a goblin and a woof, who are joined by a squirrel who is in a "fighting mood." Or by encountering a pirate, joined by a second pirate, and a third pirate shows up.
I do have a bug report for the 7DRL version w/ bug fixes: I could not seem to select the Ultra-Violence mode as the dash/hyphen was not recognized. Also I'm not sure if it's a bug or just working exactly as intended, but in the final fight if you focus the boss the game will immediately end when they're defeated.
Overall, great game!
Ah yes, the fixes in the "fixed" version broke the hyphen. It's solved in the latest version (1.01) though, which also has much better flow due to not having you type the exposition, only the combat.
The boss thing is known, theoretically the guards should not allow you to hit the boss while they're alive, but it was cut due to lack of time, so yeah, focus on the boss and you will win it quickly. Will be fixed eventually.
Genuinely funny and thrilling. A simple but brilliant mechanical variation. Having to type more difficult sentences to execute stronger attacks is *chef's kiss*!
