Absolute Gem of a game!

The Artsyle, Graphics and Music are absolutely amazing and I also really liked that you gain abilities slowly over the course of the whole game. The only thing that irritated me was the camera, I didn´t really like how it switched to the other side once you change directions, the movement of that was just a bit extreme for my taste. But other than that the platforming felt great, especially in combination with the awesome animations of the character!

Also just if you find some time, I would really appreciate if you would check out our game:

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback, the camera was very aggressive and we didn't end up having time to wrangle it.

A lovely little game!

It is short, but has been added was well polished. The animation is well made, the story is there, everything down to the UI was thought and taken care of to fit the game as it should.

Of course you certainly have here and there details you wanted to correct a bit, or had to do some compromise to release the game on time. But you have already achieve something rare in the Jam (and in Jams in general): having a full game.

Yes it needs more levels to be complete, but you already have your beginning, maybe an end, and you can certainly make more levels with the same idea it would not be out of place.

One detail that bothered me a little:

- The difference between background/foreground and actual platform was not clear enough to me. I really just found out I could jump on branches by accident :) Maybe it would be a good idea to enhanced contrasts to make it clearer, or define clearly for the player where you can walk/jump, and where you cannot.

Well done here  already ;)

Thanks! Our, focus was on polish, especially with all the art, so I'm glad you liked it. And thanks for the feedback, that's a good idea.

I love the art and music of the game. It's really a nice atmosphère. The jump on the last branch of the tree was quite hard to do. But instead of that, it wasn't too hard to play the game. It was quite balanced. Maybe add a ghost jump with the character may help with that (I mean allow the player to jump if he's already felt from the platform 0.1second ago). It's a mechanic use in a lot of platformers to make it less frustrating.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! And that's a good idea. That jump ended up being a lot harder than intended.

loved the art music and the fact that it had a mini intro. Was hard to jump at times as the input would delay, eventually, I stopped playing as there was a branch I couldn't jump from without losing health. I would save that the jump height could be increased though that may not be needed with some work to the controls. Also a maybe a softer sound effect for when a user can't use a certain input. Other than that great work! Reminded me of Gris / Monument Valley!

Developer

Thanks! And yeah, the jumping was inconsistent on the branches which made that section really hard.

Short and sweet! God I got stuck for so long on that final branch to cliff jump, felt like those near perfect inputs in mario maker lol. I really loved it overall! Great sound, amazing art style keeping it simple yet really beautiful. Super good job and at the time of leaving this rating, criminally underrated imo!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, it's hard to judge how difficult something is after playing it non stop for a week. I'm glad you liked it!

Nice art, it has a quite a unique art-style, being simple but that perfectly conveys the message, I like that creative laziness doing more with less. The concept of the game is really good, adquiring your basic movements via mirrors, it has a good music that fits within the theme.

There is certain small things that could improve the experience of the game like making the movement of the birds a bit more predictable? (making the movement a bit more smoother and clear the path of the bird) and/or having the collider of the bird smaller. Maybe you can make the attacks of the player more impactful when it hits the enemy by making a small freeze and having a particle effect.

Even though the game is small, is really well polished experience, it's kinda sad that not many people will try this game because is really well made and is really good.

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the feedback. The gameplay/combat was definitely the roughest part, as we were focused on getting a high level of polish on the art, music, and story.

I like that you've chosen one strong feature, focused on it and made a solid consistent game around it. It's a big achievement for a game jam. Well done!

I'm talking about visual and audio presentation. From this side your game isn't only looking good but also feels complete and thought out from start to end. Some Gris influences can be seen, but in a good way. Your game definitely has it's own face.

Sound, designed especially to fit the intro sequence is something exceptional for a game jam! And those owls, wah!

I'm really impressed by the story. Told without one word, abstract enough to be enigmatic and give player some space for interpretation, yet concrete in its own way to keep player's imagination in needed direction.

From gameplay perspective I can't say I like it. Movement lacks fluidity, platforming is a bit clunky and combat doesn't really add anything to the game. Also it fits the theme quite weakly. But once again, clearly these weren't your priorities and I'm glad that you didn't try to do all things at once instead of doing few things really well.

If you're going to continue working on this project, I think it would benefit from removing everything distracting from its strong sides. For example, make platforming and combat less important and stressful.

And some minor details and suggestions just for your information.

Birds movement is stiff and jittery. Maybe use sine?

Placing camera a bit in front of the character is usually a good idea, but it has a downside: dizzily fast camera movement when the player is often changing the direction of movement. It was rather irritating.

Attacking with a mouse doesn't seem to have any sense if you're not using it to control attack direction. And running with a right hand would be much more convenient.

Implementing coyote time would be great. Especially considering uncertain logical shapes of platforms. I failed so many jumps because of pressing jump button too late.

Setting up hitboxes is hard for characters with such rich animations. Yet they definitely need some tweaking. I think, it's better to make them smaller.

Main character motion lacks inertia.

The moment of landing after jump feels too stiff and fast. Additional animation could fix it.

Anyways, thank you and good luck! I had pretty good time playing your game several times)

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! You're right about our focus, but also your critiques are totally valid. A lot of those issues you mentioned were just things we didn't have time to address in a week, but if I come back to it I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

Cool vibe. I liked the jazzy soundtrack and the cinematic intro :)  I got stuck at the high branch with 2 birds

This game was AMAZING! The art, the cutscenes, the levels, the enemies, even the SFX! Its all great and it all pieces together so nicely! The only problem i can think off is MORE CONTENT! Its a mysterious, darkish, fun game that deserves more attention!

Thanks! We were a bit worried about that once we put everything together. And yeah, I'm playing all the games of people who comment, I'll check it out!

THIS is the type of game I am really into. Great job to all of you ! The atmosphere, the aesthetics, the gameplay, everything was well controlled and nicely tied together. Unfortunately, I couldn't go further than the wolf pit after I've got the attack ability. I encountered a weird bug (twice), where I couldn't jump anymore, for some reason. I had to restart the game. :(

That's the only bad thing I ran into, really, I love it and want to see more. I just hope you'll fix that jump softlock !

Developer(+2)

Thanks! That's great to hear. Sorry you ran into that bug, but there wasn't much more after the wolf pit, you didn't miss much.
