I like this entry. The ambiance is good and scary and mystical. I specially like the graphics and the audio design(pls dont place the default winning battle theme, it ruins it!). The battle system is a bit complex to get it but then , once you do, you start to enjoy it. I dont get it why once you have the ranger and go fight the grave digger the ranger will not be in your party.
Once you farm on those wolves, last boss its easy peasy.
Good job, I enjoy this!
To tell you the truth i put most of most of my focus on the battle system aka skills and enemies and story, graphics and audio a little less.
To explain the default winning theme, that's something i overlooked because i tend to play games with the audio turned off so i take the blame.
The gravedigger is part of the story but since i didn't interact much with him myself and after implementing the custom party system i forgot to add the ranger as an option there so i'm sorry about that if you had any difficulty there.
I'm glad you managed to get and enjoy the combat system,i myself though it was simple enough to grasp but given the reviews i've read or seen it's not something you can get into, obviously it's not necessary to know the system 100% to be able to defeat enemies since you have the wolves that pretty much make fights way easier so yeah.. there's that.
I'm definitely going to work some more on this game after the jam since people have said so have potential.
Thanks for playing Solum Nights and have a nice day!
Cool art, nice ambiance (mostly), and interesting combo system. Overall the execution of the clever ideas was not balanced, and led to a confusing and frustrating time. I did manage to defeat all the enemies and unlock all the skills, but I got stuck for a while before finally stumbling upon the house with the cellar. So thankfully was able to beat the game (savior ending). A few jam related suggestions:
- Fights were way too hard, even on easy. Jam difficulty should skew easier, and if you have an easy option, actually make it easy!
- Fights were repetitive and numerous. Every minute counts in a jam. If I'm fighting 10 of the same spirit, the first one or two are fun, the next 8 are tedious. Even if the battles are optional, every single one has to be meaningful and ideally, memorable.
- Wandering is not fun gameplay. I probably used up 5-8 minutes not knowing where to go. If I stuck with the the 30 minute limit, I would end my game on a frustrating note. Even with the notes found, figuring out where the house was didn't make much sense.
- More care to sounds. They broke the ambiance in a lot of places, from the cancel sound to the victory music.
- One or two scripted battles that do a better job describing the combat mechanics.
- EIther playtest thoroughly, or get one person to play through real quick for bugs. There were some map transition problems, the sign softlocked my game once, and other little things like the disappearing ranger didn't make sense.
I had a similar experience to what other reviewers are reporting: the core concept is good, but battles are too hard even on easy mode, the sound design is mostly good but has some odd moments, and it's hard to tell where to go. I'm also puzzled as to why the ranger does not appear in the battle against the gravedigger even when the ranger is in the party. There are some occasional spelling errors (particularly getting quiet and quite mixed up) but they don't make things too hard to understand.
In summary: cool concept, execution needs refining.
Cool spooky look to the maps and enemy battlers, great work there. The story is solid too.
Difficulty seemed extreme on Easy, kept getting stomped by enemies no matter what skills/combos I used. It helped a little when I realized I could stack combos and regular skills, but not enough. It was tough to earn enough souls to buy enough heals to progress, let alone new skills.
Paper's #1, #2, and #3 all show the story of the Ranger graphic when viewed from Key Items.
The default battle victory BGM seemed out of place.
All that said, with a little polish and balancing this could be a fun game, you nailed the environmental aesthetics and story, just needs some mechanical adjustments.
I didn't expect to hear the story being good since it was something i thought on brief moments so that's nice.
Well i guess i fell into the trap that the game was easier since i knew how to play the game so yeah..my bad.
Regarding the default BGM victory theme, i'm sorry since i played the game with the audio turned down or off so yeah..easy to miss.
After the jam i could return to this and tweak a few things to make the experience more enjoyable/intresting.
That's a trap I'm guilty of falling into myself :)
It's definitely already interesting! - some balancing would add more enjoyment, yeah.
I'll give it another go if you release a post-Jam update.
Cool of you to share all of your hard work freely in the Solum Nights Asset pack too.
I like the idea of banishing ghost and the soul exchanger (shop). The artstyle is catchy and there a some interesting pictures. I died serval times on easy, because I touched to many things and couldn't win each battle. Some spells are pretty effective against a single party member (like stun). You had some walking issues, so it's possible to stand on some trees or things who aren't there blocking the way. But all in all a solid game.
Regarding collisions i was pretty lazy and didn't do the best job.
Thanks for playing and enjoying the game even if it had a few issues.
Thanks and i'm glad you enjoyed the art and the game.
