I love the minimalist look of this game, its so clean. And the narration was very. I won't spoil anything for people who haven't played but I enjoyed the puzzles.

Well, while I thought it was quite difficult finding the 6, I have to say that all around this is a great game! The platforming is pretty good, it adheres to the theme really well, and the puzzles were good, both in and out of the platforming sections!

A couple of things I noticed, these aren't major complaints just little things :)

Firstly, the reading of the dialogue was a bit annoying when it was overlaid over other things. I'd say either give it an opaque black/grey background, or move it somewhere where there is less going on (the menu button kept coming up behind dialogue choices)

The platforming was all around pretty good, but there were a couple of tight jumps that felt quite difficult to do, mostly because if you did a run up it was quite hard to judge when was the correct time to jump, because if you timed it too late you'd just fall but the energy would still be used. I think this is probably a simple thing to fix though!

This isn't your fault, because you did make it really clear (but when the game is lying to you...) I pressed the reset save button, and ended up having to replay the first 6 levels. You did put the warning there, but I think it would be better to not show the button until the final credits screen, just to make sure nobody accidentally presses it!

Other than these things though, I think it is a solid game and does well both at adhering to the theme and in having good platform puzzle elements. Only other thing is to suggest some audio ;)

Developer

Damnnn, I'm so sorry about the reset button! I actually had to leave it there for debugging reasons on my friend's computers, I didn't have time to remove it, I was afraid even with the warning some people would press it exactly because of the theme...

You're the first one on itch talking about the jump mechanics and tight jumps, but all my friends who tested it also complained about it, I probably need to change something with the collider there...

Thank you about the suggestion on the dialogue opaque background, the same thing happened on my pc when I playtested it, in the unity editor it was fine because of the different resolution, I thought the only solution would be to go into resolution config/scripts and I didn't really want that, but the opaque background should fix it easily!

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Found the level 4 accidentally. Is there a level5 ?

Developer(+1)

Well, it is the game with 8 levels! *wink wink*

Developer(+1)

Oh, and the game actually saves, so you can reopen it and it should probably work from where you left off! :D

Nice job ! It's a very good game I had lot of fun playing it ! The platformer part is so good and the seeking part too ! The only problem is the lack of sound and music but it wasn't a big problem ! Keep it up !

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, I'll add some sounds in a future version, that should give the game some extra juice...

Submitted(+1)

Rated - Really great use of the them!  The platforming controls are solid as well.  After the jam, adding some simple sfx, and some more juice would be great(like particles or glowing sprites). Great job! Please check out my platformer when you can.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! Thank you for the particle suggestion, i think the game needs more visual and audio feedback for the player, I tried to compensate that a by explaining how it works, because I didn't have time to do it, but it only got to the bare minimum of being playable, the game should get better with some game juice...
I'll surely check your game!

Wow, I think what got me most about this game is that you succesfully pulled off two major ideas very well at the same time!!

Like take out the menu dialogue and detective puzzles and you have a solid puzzle platformer with a really unique and engaging mechanic! I Was stuck for quite a while on some of those later levels but the game really gave me a good sense of that "AHA!!" moment that everybody strives for in puzzle games.

Then, you put all that aside, and you have a well thought out dialogue system and humourous- theme specific menu minigame which honestly could've stood alone in the submission with just placeholder levels.

But you managed to pull both off in a really smooth and engaging way so omg bravo to you!! As most people have mentioned, the only drawback was the lack of sound but despite that, this was one of the best games I've played so far!

Developer

Thank you so much for your encouraging review! It makes me really happy to know you enjoyed it that much! :D
I'll be sure to check your game, too!

Developer

Oh, and if you like humourous dialogue, I seriously recommend you to try "totally not a summoning", it's one of the best games I've played in the game jam so far!

Submitted(+1)

I liked looking for clues to solve the puzzle of getting more levels.

The level design is fairly well executed as well, even though it's fairly simplistic.

One of the best implementations of the theme, I would argue. Though it is a little unsubtle because it shows that there are more levels at the beginning.

The thing I liked the least was the narrative. Lots of dialogue that I wanted to skip to get to the action. Tutorial included. In fact I clicked as fast as possible, then deduced how to play on my own.

There's no audio at all in the game, which is a shame. Just a few sounds would have helped.

Graphics are very simple. Coherent, but a bit too simplistic for my taste.

A solid entry. I enjoyed playing it.

Developer

Heeyy! Thank you for the feedback! Indeed, the unsubtlety was because of me getting too worried that people would think its a broken jam game and REALLY quit after the third level...
I'm curious about the dialogue thing, is that something you dislike personally? Or do you think you skipped the tutorials and the initial dialogues because of a low quality writing? Or maybe a low quality UI?
I'm glad you enjoyed playing it, thank you again for your sincere critique!

Hey there, a bit from all columns really.

I'm not a fan of dialogue for dialogue's sakes. Most people are not Steven King's children, so their writing isn't anything to (ironically) write home about. Yours at least didn't have typos that I recall, which is a plus, but I am generally skeptical of people who write things.

Secondly I don't like tutorials and similar stuff that interrupts gameplay. I understand why it sometimes works, but I think it's an anachronistic position nowadays. It would be a much better situation if the tutorial were optional or situational. There is something magical about earning your own understanding of a situation. That's a valuable aspect of games and puzzles. Don't take it away from me.

From my perspective you used dialogue to contextualise the theme, pretty much. And you succeeded at that. In fact, I liked your take on this more than many other games I've tried. Most other people went for unpleasant, sarcastic AI. You went for scared, self preserving AI. More original, but not believable. An AI has no thoughts or feelings or anything like that.

I made an analogy on my stream about this. When I was in my 20 or so, Microsoft invented a tutorial system with an animated, cute, interactive paper clip in it. Every time that little bastard popped its virtual head on the screen, I wanted to click on his little cross icon for him to go away faster than I could get my cursor to it. The infamous paper clip is now something that those who remember clearly refer to as a ridiculous idea. Now tell me, does it sound like a good idea to make a video game with the very same paper clip in it?

Now, with all this said, many people interpreted the theme as "make a game that is deliberately obnoxious to the player". Big no no in my view. You avoided this to some extent, by having the obnoxious paper clip not behave like an arse. So kudos. :D

Hope this makes sense.

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, it does make a lot of sense. Though I didn't like my cute lil' game face being compared to the paperclip of doom... Hahahaha!
By the way, the final version of the game would include a lot more dialogue and dialogue choices where you could influence the AI to different endings, resisting death in many ways or accepting it in others. The actual puzzle game with the little square is just a simple game I came up with so there could actually be a game to push the story forward.
Thank you for your patience in writing and explaining your point of view, this conversation has been very useful for me!

My pleasure. :)

Really good stuff, its fun. My only complaint is that there's no audio. Like the dialogue system, really gives the game the UMPH, ya know.

Level 6 was pretty difficult to find and difficult to beat, but then came level 7. Man, level 7 was hard. I was kinda expecting that there would be a super secret level 9 (with the c2019), but that didn't seem to be the case. Perhaps you can add some more control options, like jump with W. Some sound would also be great.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your feedback! Interesting idea with the 2019 thing! Did you get to the credits screen? I hoped that would really convince the player that the game had really ended. Thx for the "W" suggestion, I'll be sure to implement it in a full version with the sound as well!
Also, if you have the time, could you specify which part of the game was hard? My close friends who playtested complained a lot about the square being hard to control, that wasn't my intention at all, but was that the case for you as well?

Submitted(+1)

Yeah I did get the credits screen. There was some difficult from the unfamiliar controls, but most of it came from the difficulty of the puzzles. I didn't pay much attention to how good your movement controller is, but there probably are ways to improve upon it. Like jump if the character is grounded or if they were grounded 0.2 seconds ago.

Developer

Yeah, I tried to make sure it only jumped when grounded, and also recheck with a coroutine after about 0.2 seconds grounded to make sure the player couldn't get that energy before dying. Their main complaint was the square not jumping properly near the edges... I probably need to fix the ground check on that one. Thank you for your reply, it means a lot! I'll be checking your game tonight.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that automatic restart would be nice as well.

This game is short but awesome at the same time! The theme fits perfectly, the gameplay is original and I liked the fact that you gotta look for the levels in the menu. Unfortunately, the game has no audio (I would've added at least some sound effects) and the UI graphics is really simple and not user friendly (there isn't a panel when the AI speaks, so sometimes it is difficult to read what it says). But despite that, a really great game!

Developer

Thank you so much for your feedback! Sound effects were the next feature planned, but I took so long to bugfix after the game was "complete" that I didn't have time to create the soudn effects...  About that panel, it exists, but I don't know why I left it invisible(?). Looking back, I took a lot of stupid design decisions somewhere in the middle of the development. hahahaha
Then again, thanks for the feedback! I'll be sure to leave one on your game soon too!
