This game jam is being hosted by the Game Development Club at WSU (Pullman). Our club's goal is to help guide all (from inexperienced to well established) in the process of developing a game! We go over game development in various engines (particularly Unity) as well as the process of making video game art, music, and more. We are striving to create a fun space for people to brainstorm, collaborate, and help each other with various game development problems and projects. We hope that this game jam will help facilitate that purpose and give a kick start for those wanting to get into the hobby/field!
We want to see how creative you get with this game jam, and we're eager to play your finished product!
The theme for this Game Jam will be announced at the start of the jam!
The theme MUST be followed in some capacity, although feel free to get as creative as you can with stretching the theme to be something unique!
NOTE: those that have no experience creating games are encouraged to follow online tutorials and submit those for the jam. We will not be posting links to recommended tutorials as to encourage variation in the tutorials followed. However, you will not be eligible for a prize.
Who can enter?
Anyone, of any age, from anywhere (this includes students of other schools). Experience level doesn't matter! You can post submissions as a group or an individual.
When does the jam begin/take place?
We will have an opening ceremony where we will announce the game jam's theme and finalize teams. The entire game jam will take place in the Engineering building (Sloan/Dana/EEME), utilizing Computer Science class labs as venues for teams. We'll be hosting our ceremonies and talks in Sloan 5 (tentative). Opening ceremony will be held on November 8th from 6pm-8pm, we will have pizza! Guest speaker and talks are being planned.
Development Time: November 8th at 6:00pm - November 10th at 7:00pm (Veteran's Day Weekend, Friday - Sunday)
What is the theme?
We will announce the theme of the jam at the opening ceremony and promptly update/send it out to this page with the information! Remember, themes can be taken both literally and figuratively, stretch the meaning of the theme to be as unique as you desire! Have fun with it and be creative!
What can I make my game in?
Anything, provided you can upload a file that runs on Windows or in a browser. This includes (but not limited to), Unity, Bitsy, Game Maker Studios, Scratch, Unreal Engine, Godot, RPG Maker, a terminal project, a custom engine, etc. Feel free to ask us for recommendations for engines within you and your team's skill level.
What assets can I use?
The game should be developed during the jam, but you may use some pre-existing code and you can use whatever art and audio assets you have the legal right to use. This includes those from marketplaces like the Unity Asset Store, or freebies like those from Open Game Art!
Who will judge the games?
Games will be judged and voted on by the all participants and club members. Don't want to be judged? No problem! Just let us know and you can be exempt from judging! Our goal is to make better developers, not to discourage those who are new!
We recognize many people have no experience working in a game engine or with graphics libraries, which is why we have elected to have two categories for judging: games with graphics, and games that use the terminal. Terminal games can be made in any language you are comfortable with!
What will the games be judged on?
Games will be ranked against the following criteria: Theme, Gameplay, Concept, and Art (Graphics/Sound/Design).
What's the prize? ($$$)
The top three voted submissions/teams will win the following prize:
FIRST PLACE: $50 and a Shroomie trophy
SECOND PLACE $25 and a Shroomie trophy
THIRD PLACE $15 and a Shroomie trophy
