Graphically, I think this may have been my favorite of the jam. The pixel art was not only great individually, but cohesive in style as well. The risk of attack while sleeping and the enemies getting free attacks to allow you to run both felt well balanced. The dragon waking me before a full sleep was a bit of a tense moment.
The only maybe detractor that I experienced was the camera POV felt a bit low. I joked to my wife sitting here this was really a dungeon crawler cause it felt like I was looking up from the floor.
I’m a big fan of retro pixel art and this game did not disappoint.
Controls are great and the game is fun without feeling grindy.
One complaint is that for some reason it doesn’t install using the itch.io installer. But, downloading and running it manually was not difficult.
I really enjoyed this entry. Great work!
This was pretty cool. I love all the pixel art. Really gets across that dank fantasy vibe.
Not sure if the stepping bob was a little over-exaggerated or not but it felt very smooth to move around and turn.
The duality was well represented in the dual player characters, one Offense and one Support. I'm a sucker for dual protagonists, and it's fun to imagine what their dynamic would be like in a more developed version of the game.
The combat interface was satisfying, but I found there was only one viable strategy.
Paralyze all. Crush at least two opponents to kill them in one hit. Pick off any stragglers with simple attack. Then rest to recover HP and MP after every battle. Even with 4 enemies at once, the Whirlwind didn't feel viable, since it couldn't take out large groups quickly and efficiently enough.
(I mean, it feels silly reviewing the combat like this, when the Jam obviously doesn't allow for much testing and tuning, but figured I'd say so anyway. And I still found it pretty enjoyable to play all the same.)
Couple of niggles that maybe you know about:
The windowed mode was offset for some reason for me. It was about a 3rd of the way into the upper left corner. Fullscreen worked fine thankfully.
When you die, the HP and MP stats don't reset, so you have to quickly rest before the game realizes and kicks you back to the title screen.
"Enemies defeated: 17"
I fled more than I'd like to admit. The game looks good, movement is good, and it's fun, resource management is always cool. I enjoyed it.
Looks very good, though I got ambushed by 4 dwarves at the start and having only one party member able to do action is very daunting, especially at the start, while you still learning how to act in what situations.
Also I didn't find a way to 'cancel' action? Is it possible to switch between attacks/magic after you selected action, but didn't press arrow yet?
And agree with needing more sounds in general. Steps are nice, but I would love more feedback in combat too.
Good execution and looks very good but somewhat imbalanced as you can be run over by a party of 4 from the near start. If you die, you need to exit and restart the game because just going to "new game" will not refresh your health
Now that you mention it, I never tested this and indeed I forgot to reset Global variable on new game.
Hey there! I had a chance to try out this game on Linux using wine, and I must say, the graphics are stunning! I particularly enjoyed the solid step sound effect, though I think it would benefit from some additional ambient sounds in the background. The visual feedback when selecting an attack against a group or individual creature is a really nice touch. Although there's still some room for improvement, I think you're off to a great start! I'd love to see this game fully developed, so keep up the good work!
The graphic is beautiful. But the battle are hard, it might be better with enemy walking around and maybe reduce the enemy count to max 3 rather than just all 4.
The game looks great, artwork and UI are nice and clean.
Audio is lacking, I only hear the footstep sfx.
Combat is pretty good, but I don't really like the random encounters. It would be nice if you saw the monsters walking around.
