Yo! Took some notes while playing your charming RPG:
The game starts right up, and I actually really like how there's no lore dump or a super long intro. The explanations for the first quest are so straightforward and simple, it's so clear what you're supposed to do. Many games like to write up 3 paragraph essays to explain something that players can just already understand or can be explained in like 1 sentence, so this was a bit refreshing actually!
"Rewards: your mother's approval" love stuff like this haha. Touches like this go a long way. Keep it up!
Not sure if you can control this but the fences dont need to block the camera, so if it's possible, you could turn off their collision for the camera, it feels kinda awkward currently.
Could have a spot that explains you can use Q and E to turn the camera. This could be put in the stone room you wake up in. By the time I got to that room, I actually forgot i could use a lantern, maybe it could automatically turn on when you're in there since you'd probably want to use it? Could just me also forgetting I had the lantern though. Also, I didn't know you have a health potion you can use to heal back up after the fight with the dude in that same room. Maybe after you find the hole and land in the next stone area there's a text that says to use the health potion?
The text spellout sound effect is kind of loud, could be turned down and/or replaced with a more subtle sound.
Not sure if this was intentional, but "Render Distance" and other options actually appear on all three categories on the menu.
Sometimes in battle, while selecting a "fighter" ability, the "This Turn" box on the top left actually blocks an enemy standing on the upper section of the floor, unable to see their health bar. This might be because the game doesn't have any resolution options, so it's running like an older game at something like 480pi but stretched up. Adding these will help the overal experience for sure!
I like this little game! It's got this great balance where it feels familiar, but the little twists added to the RPG genre really make it work far better than the hundreds of similar games that don't really feel self aware enough or try anything a bit different. Keep up those little additions and you'll make this into an even more charming RPG!
Thanks for the detailed report! I really appreciate it! I’ll absolutely check out all those things you mentioned, sometimes I get so familiar with some of the aspects of the game it’s hard to see things from an outsiders perspective! (Plus the annoying text sound is the main thing people mention, so that’s definitely getting redone)
Hey no problem!! Totally get that issue with needing the outsider's perspective, that's like the secret weapon to figuring out how to improve your own game haha. Looking forward to seeing progress!!
Nice traditional RPG with an intriguing story so far, seems very complete in terms of skills to learn, classes, etc. I can see it being very interesting on the long term in terms of character's evolution! Visual effects and sound are top-notch, but I had a bit of a hard time finding my way in some of the dungeons due to the 3D and camera issues. The screen was also quite dark at times even after lighting up some sconces (though this is normal in some places given the context). I played with a controller and couldn't find a way to perform some actions without having to use the keyboard (like turning the compass on/off, etc.). Not sure if it'd be possible to map everything single action on a controller though, so it might be expected. Anyways, good job, it's definitely on the right track!
Thanks for the feedback! I’m definitely going to looking into controller mapping, as I’ve only briefly touched on that so far!
ARE THE HORSES OK?! Ha.
What I loved:
1) Love me some turn based battle systems. Tried and true.
2) Love the after battle theme.
Some critiques:
1) We receive directions in chat (e.g. east road) but no way to immediately see what direction that is, unless I'm missing a mechanic. The compass doesn't update as you turn?
2) The dialog text is a bit too grating. Maybe a more muted effect or UI sound control.
3) Keyboard way to select dialog? Maybe in general introduce key bindings before we start? Tutorial section when entering the forest the first time before the fire?
4) No confirmation that you've equipped something? I couldn't tell if Father's dagger was equipped or not.
The horses are ok! (All of them). I’ll double check the compass, because it should rotate as your character turns, but not the camera. The text blips are currently just the default, since I haven’t found one I really like yet, it’s definitely going to change haha. I’ll take a look at equip confirmation and dialogue selection, I’m not at my pc right now, but I think you can wasd the selections and hit space to choose them, unless you’re talking about hitting the number keys that correlate to the choices then I’m not so sure.
Thanks for playing it! I really appreciate the feedback!
New build up! Added a compass, tweaked some boss health numbers, and made cross class skills actually work!
I can't download and try out this game.
EDIT
I was able to download it through the browser.
Pretty solid RPG. The camera controls took some getting used too. This game really reminds me of the original elder scrolls but in 3rd person. I like how the game progressed. I didn't really like the camera, it felt like tunnel vision, not sure if there is a way to zoom out.
Thanks for playing it! I was definitely inspired by early western rpgs, I'm working on making the camera a little more accessible, but if you zoom out too far the maps start to fall apart in terms of quality haha.
Edit: I added a zoom out feature! If you press C the camera zooms out a bit. There's a bit of a graphical glitch if you're exactly 4 tiles away from a wall with your back to it, since the camera clips into it a bit. But it's a step in the right direction!
Holy Crap! I've been following this for a few months on Twitter and it has come so far! Old school RPG elements but definitely a refreshing story that isn't the generic "Chosen One" story. I'm excited to see how the final product looks, but this is looking great. P.S. the soundtrack is fantastic.
