Dear Folklore Jammers,

I hope folks are doing well. What is the folklore inspiring you right now, and how's everyone's progress?

I'll start:

In Hong Kong urban legends, there's a haunted public housing estate rumoured to be built on top of WWII-era mass graves, and also experienced devastating landslides in the 70s. In the game I am working on, a group of teenagers explore a fictionalised version of the haunted estate, with Jenga mechanics inspired by Dread and The Wretched. (It is interesting to think that spooky tales/ghost stories as a way in which humans process immense tragedies beyond our comprehension.)

Yours faithfully,

Arthur

Oh that sounds amazing :D

For now I'm just planning on reviewing Rooster and Owl before submitting it. It's based on talking animals folklore. My partner has Native American blood (it was written with MiniNewt, our child, in mind), we live in the States, and I used to love Aesop's fables when I was young.

I do have some ideas for folklore that's closer to home in a couple of different ways. In the major city closest to us, there is practically an underground city right beneath it. Most of it has been closed off for safety, but we took a tour a few years ago of what's still open to the public and they have a fascinating history. I might make a map-making game based on them, though I'll want to look up what some of the more popular ghost sightings were X3

I've also been wanting to create something about golems. I'm Jewish by bloodline if not by practice, and the bits and tidbits I recall about them have always made me smile. I'll have to do more research (my ma never had an interest in stories involving them so she's a poor source of info), but I think it would be neat to have players create a golem character who is charged with protecting a town, or maybe a golem looking for a new purpose after their original need is complete.

Those are some great folklore inspirations!

I love stories about underground cities!

Ugh, I'm not even sure if I'm going to get to any of these ideas x.x I barely had a chance to fix some serious spacing issues (well, not serious but were bugging me because justified alignment has always bugged me) in my Rooster and Owl game x.x If nothing else though, it felt good getting some of those ideas down. Maybe I'll save one for the next Folklore Jam :3

I decided to draw on a "recent" urban legend with roots in older folklore from my country of origin (Scotland); the Gorbals vampire. It's a pretty great story.

Just submitted! I'm originally from the Lake District and was inspired by the stone circle "Long Meg & Her Daughters" it's surrounded by superstitions folklore and I've really enjoyed the witchy vibes!

Also...  maybe I've been working on a silly pun game for this jam. My husband and I had "Faux-Claw" rattling round  in our brains and I just can't get these cats off my mind ... too off topic I wonder?
