My approach for this jam was to create one song that incorporates both themes at once. I struggled a bit with figuring out what "breaking the rules" would mean for me. What I eventually came up with is a collections of ideas, sounds, and composition choices that I personally thought would be challenging and unusual to combine into something coherent. Notable elements are a 9/4 time signature with a "4-on-the-4" rhythm, an aggressive 'bad connection" effect, stops throughout, and explosion sfx. My interpretation of the second theme was to make musical and sound design choices which reflected the setting and atmosphere in the image. The scene inspired me to pick sounds and instruments that were big and airy and which echo throughout the landscape. My decision to incorporate an explosion sfx came from there being a volcano in the mountain range.
Thank you for listening!

GG 🔥
Is that your cat?
Your piece is dizzying, like you are trying to follow a some horrible curve given by trig functions. Or perhaps gazing back down at the valley floor in the lee of a ridge.
You used the "bad connection" effect well as a rhythmic device. Your bass synth slaps. Did you drown the explosion sfx in reverb? Whatever you did, it fits in well with your mix.
I'ts my partner's cat Manti! Thank you so much for sharing how you interpreted the piece in such a visually creative way! The explosion is actually some kick and snare samples getting obliterated by my SoundToys Decapitator VST and then going through the airiest reverb known to man haha. Super glad it fits in with the rest!
Very nice one, u managed to mix both themes together very well 🔥
Hell yea thank you so much!
Nice job! I love the way you were able to pull the choppiness into a cohesive sound. The glitchiness really tugs at your ear, keeping you listening and you brought everything together nicely! And I liked that the sounds you used supported the feeling of a "bad connection"
What you said about the glitchiness tugging at your ear is very thought provoking! I agree and it's making me thing I can still experiment with the idea much further in future work! I'm very happy you also found it cohesive! I tried very hard to make it so but I'm never quite sure after hearing it over and over lol
Really cool track ! I love how the differents ideas are mixed together, with this solid groove to support it. The harmonies gave me some nostalgic vibe, and are well chosen.
My favorite part starts at 1:09, the arpeggiator is a very nice addition ! And very good job on the sound design part, the explosion adds a punctuation through the piece and some depth, love it !
Very well done !
I love how you put it with the explosions! They absolutely do feel like punctuation throughout! I'm really glad to hear that the nostalgic vibes are getting through as well! I've been wondering how to be more intentional about creating that emotion lately and the use of harmonies definitely sounds like a big piece of the puzzle! The section that starts at 1:09 is actually the first part that I came up with lol and I kind of struggled at first to expand off of it. Still my favorite part too!
i love how complex your synths are! did you make them yourself? the arpeggiator in particular is very satisfying!
I used Vital VST for most of the pitched instruments! I really enjoy trying to obsessively recreate the sounds I hear in my head in the form of a playable musical instrument! What really turned up the "satisfying" on the arpeggiation for me was adding just the right amount of glide to the synth !
The idea of having a solid beat and bass to support the "bad connection" effect works really well. The two parts complement each other. A very solid mix, very deep. I like how you used the 9/4, it took me a while to understand how you subdivided it, I hear it as 4+1+4 which is really cool because that 1 looks like it's the end of a 5/4 but then te bar keeps going. Really nice
Thank you! Supporting the "bad connection" was exactly what I was going for with the bass and drums! The way you count it is definitely the way to count the drum part but I mostly count it as "dum pa dum pa dum dum pa dum pa" lol. I tried using the semi-open hihat hits and ghost notes to "hide" the switchup in the middle of the bar and I find that it works really well! The reverse piano part that comes in at the last section is actually counted as 3+3+3 which I find gives it a lot of energy!
Wow that bass and synth there got me real vibes, good track.
The bass was the part I fixated on the longest and I'm glad I did!!
yes i like the choppynes it has and the lead sounds are nice and fitting for a mountain theme :)
Thank you! I'm very happy you found them appropriate!!
Really Good And Calming Track. Amazing
Thanks! I'm always happy to provide some calmness here and there :)
