How does your game fit the theme?
The player is a young boy locked up in his old family house. He finds the key to open the front door but it's alive! They explore the house together and create a bound.

Did you use any assets?
I used some community sprites for the furnitures of the house. I had to modify them a little bit to fit the game. I made all other assets and code.

A classic adventure game from Gb studio. I like the unlit rooms, and the graphic touch-ups you've done! It makes you want to explore the house to solve the "puzzles" ;)

Thank you! This looks so good on an original Game Boy! I think the unlit rooms are made to work on a Game Boy Color, but I'm glad it turns out ok!

I love how much writing you put into this, and it feels both silly and organic. Nicely done, especially for only 3 days of work!

Developer

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

i had a lot of fun exploring the house, but then it was fun to explore again with the key! the kitchen banter had me laughing. the clock sounds really made it feel lonelier, too. and wow 3 days!? awesome work!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that you tried all the interactions with the key again ^^

i have played the game twice. the first time i just directly try the front door after getting the key. the second time, I get the key and explore around with it. but it still leads to the bad ending. Is there only one ending. Interesting game, btw

Developer

You played it twice? Wow, thanks! This makes me happy :)

You're right, I had planned to add a counter mechanic to track the number of rooms explored and dialogues the player would start. This would have influenced the ending but, I was really short in time and I had to cut it off. I ended up submitting the game 7 minutes before the end of the jam!

I love that almost everything in this game can be investigated and interacted with, definitely sells a little boy talking to himself and having fun when nobody else is there to be there with him. The gameplay is a little stale though, as its mainly just finding a key.

Hello, thank you for playing my game and for your feedback!

The game was made in 3 days. To be able to deliver it in time, I decided to aim for a simple gameplay and put my work into writing dialogues and creating a friendly environment that can be fully explored. Once you have found the key, you can interact again with everything and you'll get new dialogues and informations on the characters and the family. I hope you'll give it a try!

I did not realize this, oof O.o Still, for three days that's quite a bit of detail. If you do add mechanics like that, I would recommend adding a subtle nod or something implying you can investigate stuff so that its a little clearer next time. I suppose the key telling you not to leave does that a little? But that's just my take.

Developer

I thought about adding a spark effect like in resident evil (and another GB game I made last month) but I wanted to let the player wander around in quiet and discover things by himself. Since there are no NPC's and going through the front door let the player understand he can investigate the environment, I thought he would end up investigate things. I did add subtle hints in dialogues like you said, I'm glad you saw that! I have already made a polish iteration for the dialogues, but I'll update the game after the Jam.
