Nice game. I love this kind of games and it has a lot of potential. I didn't finish it although I leveled a lot and kept playing for a while but I'm not sure who killed the king. The dragon or the orcs or something else?
There are some bugs that need fixing:
Axe after some time started shooting in random directions and not the mouse direction
The player gets stuck easily and sometimes can't be unstuck.
Still, it was very enjoyable for me and I played it for a while. Good job :)
It was a nice little game and I had a nostalgic feeling by playing this. I really liked the mechanics but I had the problem, that my axes worked like boomerangs and they came back to me everytime. Is this supposed to be like that? Otherwise, well done! :)
Someone else mentioned that but I never came across that in play testing that I did. It might be an issue playing in the browser or the GL build. I'll investigate as that shouldnt happen. Thanks for reviewing
Fun game :D the axe could be a little faster and the pixelart was blurry. Did you want it like that? Normaly you set it to point no filter.
Anyway I had fun and would be happy, if you'd play and rate mine.
Wasn't supposed to be blurry :( Will be fixing that as I work more on the project after the jam. Such a nice little setting... completely missed it. Thanks for feedback and reviewing
good, but why do my axes work like boomerangs? the comeback and hit me
Thanks for reviewing. The axes weren't meant to come back to you. That might be a weird bug for me to investigate. All bullets are supposed to hurt no matter who threw them though. My plan was to have enemies hit each other and then agro against the original shooter. But right now they either shoot at you or the human archers or dragon, if any close.
Nice submission! I wasn't completely sure what I was doing but I had a good time exploring the map. I chose to ignore the danger sign and got cooked 🤣
Thanks for reviewing and glad you enjoyed it. Good feedback and hopefully when I add some NPCs their guidance will help better the experience
I really like the environment and the atmosphere it creates. I also like the story and how storytelling is incorporated into the environment. Very fun!
I think to make this game even better, you may consider showing the cooldown of the attack, and adding more variety to the combat. I already like the storytelling, but I think you can push even harder to incorporate a richer story.
Overall, while the game feels a bit unpolished, your ideas shine through. You should be very proud of what you've accomplished, and continue to work on it! Nice attempt!
Thanks for the feedback! I had plans for bow, spear and magic attacks but never got to them. :) Showing the cooldown Im still not sure on the best ways. Will have to experiment.
Pretty good submission! I like the story, and the 2d top-down style is really nice. But the 2d sprites were quite blurry. You can easily fix this in unity by editing your sprites filter mode to "point (no filter)". Other than that though I really liked the art! I also liked throwing axes, although because of the long cooldown on throwing your axe (and how little damage they did) it was far more effective to let the orcs kill themselves with their own axes though lol. I'm not really sure what the fix could be on that, because I'm guessing you wanted collateral damage. And if you lower your cooldown/increase your axes damage that might make the game to easy. So I'm not entirely sure what I'm suggesting, but as is combat feels a little unpolished. In general though, this was a really good submission! The amount of content was impressive considering we only had 10 days. Good job! :)
Also, maybe you could check out and rate my game? :)
Such a small option and what a huge difference it makes! Thank you for recommending that! :)
Even on my test plays I was considering the cooldown mechanics... making it shorter made me able to spam axes and then combat was super easy. I decide on a level system last minute that would decrease the times but its not very well portraited in the game. Thanks for the feedback
I love this top-down games so I might be a bit biased :P
I liked the mechanics and the time I spent killing orcs was pretty fun.
Some things that I found were a bit confusing:
- Both player and orcs can get hit by their own axe. I hit myself many times and some orcs also killed themselves (pretty funny actually).
- There was no cooldown indication for attacking so at the beginning I wasn't sure if I had run out of ammo or just the spacing between attacks was really long.
I saw that you already mentioned the lack of time for implementing things. With them I'm sure´it will be a pretty solid game. Good Job!
I grew up playing games like gauntlet and warlords. The funniest part was the multiplayer when you could shoot each other and stun. The axes hitting everything was by design and the plan was to cause orcs to start and attack each other if hit by someone other than the player. Orcs killing themselves by running into their own bullets was a funny side effect of that. The only part I removed was the dragon hitting itself as in play testing it shoots a lot faster and was also killing itself pretty quickly. Even the human archers can shoot and kill each other and the player, but they only attack/aim for orcs.
I had plans for a cooldown display but couldnt fit it in. As you increase in levels the cooldown becomes faster and hits become stronger... but I dont display that anywhere :/
I see you ran out of time to implement a lot of things you wanted, like quest givers and use for gold, but that's fine, you can do it later.
Scope creep is definitely a thing. I think I was a little too ambitious for all the things I wanted to add. I tried to have a war in the middle of the map between orcs and humans once they reached a certain population level. Its funny to watch if you get to see it. At one point when I was play testing the dragon came over and killed absolutely everyone! :/
Not a bad game! I enjoyed my time playing it
Thank you for reviewing. :)
Looks good and I liked the concept but I couldn't understand what I was actually meant to do, I just ended up running around the map collecting health and gold and making friends with the dragon.
Thanks for reviewing. Main task of the game is to find who killed the king. I ran out of time but I was planning on adding npcs as quest givers
Hi, I noticed your submission is missing source. Your source is everything someone needs to download your game, open it in the game engine, and hit Play to play the game. Here is an example of the files to include: https://github.com/icepol/DeathIsOnlyTheBeginning
I added the github link. Thanks for checking. :)
It looks good now :)
