Not sure why this is in both year's jams, but its a cool idea. I included it in my GMTK Game Jam 2019 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)
A really clever game that bends RPG Maker in a really interesting way. This is a really good puzzle game! Adding a Wait command or spell that doesn't do anything but takes 100 MP would be appreciated though as it feels like I'm not doing anything by just constantly doing Fire whenever I want to wait but not use an Augment. Awesome use of the theme and toolset here, please make more to this!
I have submitted another RPG Maker Game if you'd like to try it https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/463926
Thanks for your comment!
Gonna play it now! Wow, 2 games made in 48 hours for the jam??? Thats dedication!
(also just wanted to say, gotta admire this game being submitted 38 seconds before the deadline. you gotta take risks to make gains!)
Hah hah, and that's not even taking into account that the deadline was delayed for 2 hours.
Welp, the opposite charge puzzles in this one are definitely more comprehensive than in Single Armed, and I am not sure whether we are allowed to re-submit games from the previous jams, but I will give it a pass, since it also fits this jam's theme. :-)
I've actually tried reducing all stats to just on in my own VX Ace game, but couldn't figure out how to do that (I've first learned that engine over the weekend), so I instead went with making you only get one weapon, one armor, one level, etc. throughout the game.
I've been using RPGM since I was a kid (almost ten years now). That's how I've learned to script all sorts of small tricks. I'm glad you didn't have problems this time!
The game would do better as a boss rush rather than an RPG style, but otherwise, great game! Although, I think you need to give more context to the skills, they are very complicated, but they do make great strategic decisions.
I know my games are complex and very niche, and I wish I could use something other than RPG Maker so that I had better tools to explain the mechanics. Thanks for the opinion! ^^
Cool idea! I got stuck on the 2nd floor against the fire slimes. It seemed like they all attacked each other or something? Didn't really understand what was going on there, but I'm sure if I wasn't stuck the other battles would be more competitive.
Got stuck as well, maybe I missed something?
Just playtested and nope, it's working as intended. If you want the solution, tell me. It's easier if you think of these battles as puzzles rather than battles.
I was trying to think of them more as puzzle due to the way cost and hits can change. I'll take the solution for this one as a free pas so I can get to the rest of the game! Looks really interesting
Unless your build is different than mine and I forgot to update it, you should be able to complete it by using Fire three times then Great Fire once.
If you lose to the second fight twice, a bug will prevent you from leveling up when you should. At this point, you have to restart the game. I'm sorry, I'll fix it as soon as the Jam is over.
Huh interesting. And you're solution worked. Either way I think any game has bugs but beyond that you have an interesting idea sticking to the theme!
Thanks for your kind comment! And thanks mostly for playing!

Gonna playtest it in case I messed up something.

I got stuck too. It appears to be straight forward. Hit fireball until they run out of mana then aoe. However I don't have enough mana for that strategy to work. I'm don't know what other moves I can make... : /
You don't have enough mana? That's strange, I just playtested it. How much mana do you have?
I have 500 at the start of the fight. When the Slimes run out of mana, I have 200.
I think I found the problem. If you lose a 2nd time against the Willowisp you don't receive the increase to your mana. Therefore, you won't have enough mana for the next area.
Oh really? How can this happen? I'm looking at the code and there shouldn't be any problem. It will take time to fix this, but I can't update the game until the Jam is over anyway.
I found the problem, but I can't upload the fixed version until the jam is over. Fortunately for me , execution isn't rated on this Jam, so bugs shouldn't affect the score haha XD
Thank you for looking into this. I managed to play the game to completion and I enjoyed it. Good luck to you.
Thank you! It's really uplifting when someone enjoys it ^^

It's not bad, but it lacks complex problems, the game kind of boils down to "use fire until it can't hurt you any more" which isn't super compelling. Cool idea, and definitely fits the theme, and for RPG maker it's definitely some good quality.
Perhaps you only played the first few battles? The complexity ramps up as you progress. Or perhaps you played the whole thing and didn't find it strategic enough, in which case, I'm sorry :( Thanks for the opinion!
I feel like the one stat is a nice idea but I can't say that the execution felt very fun. Do I not have any defensive spells at the beginning of the game? All i can find is Fire.
You find more spells as you progress!
Yeah but it tells me to use some defensive spells at the beginning but then I don't have any. Feels annoying that I can't follow directions.
Ah, no, all spell are defensive. All spells shield you.
A fun rpg-maker style game without HP, only mana.
I hope you liked it!
