Ranked from 46 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does your game fit the theme?
Being "out of control" is the failure condition. Being hit makes it harder to keep in control. The situation is designed to become chaotic and more "out of control" as levels progress. Part of the music is generated reactively and semi-randomly to highlight this "out of control" situation.

I really like the idea of asteroids on a sphere. Kinda reminds me of Geometry wars 3.  If you wanted to develop this further you could try other shapes like a torus. Overall a nicelly presented game that I had quite a bit of fun with

Developer

Thanks! Interestingly, most asteroid shooting games are on tori (toruses?); when you leave the screen from above you appear below and when you leave it from the side you appear from the other side. In the case of the real projective plane (or half sphere), when you leave at one point of the circle, you appear from the opposite point (there's no "other side of the sphere"); This is fun because no matter where you shoot, you'll hit yourself in the back if you don't move (this wouldn't be the case in the torus; only if you shoot upwards or sideways, or at a certain specific angles).

Oh yeah you're right! It's the same with Pac-Man as well I recall

Really great representation of the world. Really liked it!

Developer

Thanks! Figuring out how to do the sphere-y thing was one of the things I wanted to try out for some time, and this game jam was an excuse to finally do so!

5/5. I was enjoying the music so much that I wasn't doing myself any good gameplay-wise. 😁 Love the design of your bullets being your obstacles. Great game!

Developer

Thanks! I also often find myself with more bullets flying round than asteroids to destroy...

This is really well put together, very impressive. I would have made the default binds for rotation the left / right arrow keys, but after fiddling with the settings I was able to get a more comfortable position.

Awesome work!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, those seem to be the preferred alternative bindings for rotations. You can set it to the left/right arrows, but then you'd have to write "arrowleft" and "arrowright" without being able to actually write the 'a' or 'w'... While you can copy paste it from somewhere else, those setting are far from ideal. The reason why the game "takes" all the keys used is so that, for example, pressing space doesn't move the page all the way down, or the up/down arrows don't move the website... I guess there's advantages and disadvantages to web games like these.

I liked the game, we had a similar concept in our game

Thanks for giving my game a try! I was unfortunately unable to run yours (I'm on Linux, and 'wine' was unable to run the Windows executable). Buena suerte con la game jam!

I loved this. I love the art style and the music especially. I thought the spaceship could have done with rotating a lot faster (I found myself just moving around with WASD and ignoring QE all together), but I found it really satisfying even then. It's also given me some interesting-looking maths to research, so bonus points for that I guess.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback! Now that I think of it, the rotation does feel quite slow. This changes in later levels due to the drag being lower, though it is quite slow at those levels too.

This is so nicely done. On one hand, I didn't want to shoot too many bullets, because things would start spiralling out of control. On the other hand, shooting felt só satisfying because of the sound effects. I just wanted to shoot bullets and make music.

The spin effect when being hit was very well executed. I felt my ship going out of control, but somehow I still felt in control and could recover from the situation more times than not.

I really like this, great work!

This game makes me go YES!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it : )

Hello! I played your game on stream! If you want to see your game played with live feedback, you can find the VOD and watch from this sheet: http://bit.ly/bean-stream

Developer

Thanks for that! I have no idea how you did it, I was so tired after the jam ended, it's amazing you had the energy to play through so many games!

Submitted(+1)

Haha, pure excitement carried me through most of it. Playing people's games and seeing their interpretation is half the fun of a jam!

Easy 5 stars, I had to read the instructions twice, once before playing, and then after because I didn't really read them XD. Everything felt really smooth and responsive, I think I would've preferred that Q and E were switched to the arrows, but that's my preference. The art style was great, the music and sounds were perfect for the game, and possibly my favorite part, the bullet noises changing pitch to match the song, I really liked that trick, and might just use it in the future....Anyway, great game, deserves top 20, personally my favorite so far :)

Developer

Thanks for your comments! Yeah, it's not always obvious what controls to choose when you need more than WASD, I thought Q and E were standard but my friend also found them uncomfortable. There is an option to change controls in the "settings", though it is not user friendly at all.

Submitted

I think that if you had mouse controls for shooting instead of space, Q and E would make more sense, as your second hand is already occupied. Awesome game though! First 5 stars I've given out

Simple visuals and sound effects, but they go well with the game's ambience! I really liked it! It took me a while to understand how you play, but in the end I found it really cool! Very good!

Developer

Thanks so much! Would you say it's the controls or the game mechanics that were harder to understand at first?

Submitted(+1)

Came here because based on the screenshots thought it's a sphere. Turns out it's a half-sphere. Even better! One of my favorite manifolds.

Neat sound effects.

Developer

I kind of wanted to try out this geometry, and the half sphere seemed to be one of the easiest and coolest way to do it. The advantages vs a sphere are that everything is on the screen! Thanks for your comment, it got me to check a really cool puzzle game.

Really cool visuals because of the projection you are using for the real projective plane.
controls are great, and i love the simple yet nice art-style.

Also i noticed that you asked on bean_borgs stream yesterday how i did my moving background
here is a link to the shader code i used https://gitlab.com/the-fiddling-fiddlers/gmtkjam/-/blob/master/levels/game_world... its a modified Voronoi Tessellation shader.
its made for the Godot engine, but should be easily changeable to work in OpenGL's GLSL shader language.

Developer

Thanks for that, I was really curious how the moving background was made! I had a hunch the base was something to do with Voronoi, but all the twisting and changing is what really caught my attention.
