Thematic Relevance
Harriet Tubman is a pillar of 19th century United States history. Born a slave in 1822, she escaped slavery and began bringing other slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad, a secret network dedicated to transporting former slaves to safe havens in abolitionist states and Canada. When the American Civil War began, Tubman joined the Union Army as a cook and nurse.
After President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in Confederate states, Tubman turned to spywork, leading scouts through South Carolina. This would eventually lead to the Combahee Ferry Raid, the first military operation to be led by a black woman in the USA.

However, we also find it significant that Tubman was never paid for her role in the raid due to her status as a woman in the 19th century.

I loved the art style of the characters.

Glide your way around obstacles in the night, it’s for a good cause!

The music leads you into a cozy opening scene, and I love the 2D art and font choices here especially. Not the biggest fan of the drawing of the boat, and it looks a bit too out there against the 3D backdrop, but I was able to navigate just fine around the obstacles. It was also slightly too dark for me, but that’s potentially an eyesight thing. I couldn’t do much more (didn’t figure it out I guess), but the different destinations that I could target, stood out nicely.

Thanks for participating in HAGJ9!

You incorporated the backstory well, I actually feel like I've learnt something. The music created a good atmosphere and the 2d art was very well done. I had issues with loading on chrome. It took a few minutes and when it did load it wouldn't play when I pressed the play button. So I had to do the windows install and that worked okay. I kind of wish the river ride had the same art style as the cutscenes, maybe that would have fit better. The boat also got caught on the shore in a few places that felt unfair. Anyway, I really liked this entry. Congrats.

Nice game! It did not load for me in Firefox, it only opened a new tab that loaded way too long (maybe I did not wait long enough, but a few minutes should be plenty of time), but the downloadable version worked.
I especially liked the music, but in my opinion the flat boat was a bit weird in the otherwise 3D environment, but that may just be due to time limitations, 3D models take time after all. I though it a bit unclear where the levels ended: In the first level the end was at the only watchtower, in the second level at the last one, with a clear path, but in the third level I had some issues: Right next to the U-turn, which is rather hidden, is a watchtower. In my first try I did not even see the turn and just thought: Here is a tower, this might be the end, and then I just ran ashore and took damage. Maybe communicate the end of the level better?
All in all, great, short game, with good and intuitive controls, and telling history nicely with great art and music. Might be the best I have seen so far.

I thought the 2D boat would add a fun bit of personality to the design, but it wasn't exactly as I imagined it. I'm so glad you consider it good quality!

I tried the game on Firefox and Chrome but it didn't start on my Mac.

The game works better if you download it.

Wow, we didn't know Harriet had a flying punt! But the takeoff animations were nice. good game overall
(((We did not find the 16K version of the punt, only the 720p one. We assumed it would be included, judging from the file size...)))

Thank you for trying our game! Glad you liked it.

And I apologise about the file size. It turns out optimising 3d environments with physics takes lots of time and skill.
