There's some charm here, the grid system works pretty well but I do wish there was a line showing the path made, The music is a little repetitive, I know from one of your you were running out of time from one of your replies to a comment but I feel you could have put text saying "Use the arrow keys to continue" in the game before you ran out of time, but you did put it in the page so I can't be too mad. the different unit types are also nice with their stats being different enough to be justified
Hey, thanks for the last minute rating!
Yeah we massively overestimated our capabilities lol. Time was super tight
Sameeee, GeomeTrick was supposed to have 3 more levels, unique tilesets and a boss fight. and all that got scrapped
Charming little game, reminds me of strategy games I used to play when I was growing up. I really like the dialogue and characters! Only thing I would improve is the awkward controls - I tried to click the arrow in the dialogue menu for quite a long time until I realised I was supposed to press the arrow button on the keyboard
aww that's nice to hear! I'm glad you liked the design side of the game :)
and I was intending on making it a clickable button but the time crunch was real. And that can be said about most of the game's short comings
An interesting game, what can I say. Make sure to check out my game as well!
An interesting game, took me a while to get the hang of (maybe a tutorial could be good). The idea was very creative and incredibly unique though. Great stuff (:
Haha thank you :) The first level is meant to be a little tutorial and the dialogue is meant to explain new mechanics. I agree that its not as comprehensive as it should be.
A interesting twist on the theme!
My approach to Game Jams has always to think outside of the box with the theme. I just hope it makes me stand out a little :)
This was a solid little strategy game. It reminded me of a real-time-strategy version of Advance Wars. I liked the design of the characters as spheres in the color of their country's flag. That's from something, right? I want to say there's a history youtube channel that does that. I think the only thing that could improve this game would be maybe a bit of polish, like adding some sound effects for when a battle is happening, and a line render to show a unit's path once it's assigned. I liked the music but it did get a little repetitive, maybe just make it longer so that it's a 2-3 minute loop with some variation rather than what felt like a 15-30 second loop? But overall, yeah, this is a very nice experience.
So, I've never played Advanced Wars, but after watching some gameplay footage, I can say that you make a good point lol.
And you are correct, the character designs are based off Polandball (or Countryballs), digital comics made by people all over the internet. There are also many YouTube channels that use them. If I had more time, I would've liked to lean further into that art direction but 72 hours simply wasn't long enough.
Annoyingly everything you suggested was on my to-do list but I just didn't get chance to implement them :(
Sadly the music is only 30 seconds long, and half of that is the intro. My musician is more of a quality over quantity guy.
Uh... yes, quality over quantity. Definitely. *ahem*
I really enjoyed the strategy aspect of the game and how it gets progressively harder as you advance through the levels.
I'm usually terrible at managing the difficulty in my games. Good to hear that I got that right for once lol
while there were a few bugs (artillery w/o visible health bars, the bottom row of the grid sending units all the way up (which might push the sprite of enemy units, making them untouchable), being able to create omega units (units stacked on each other all on 1 tile) by abusing the grid movement system, being able to move diagonally (very finicky tho), I generally enjoyed the game
if u do work on this more, i hope u lean more into the countryball side of things (like having the units be countryballs (whether they wear helmets to indicate infantry, sit in a tank, etc.)) and some more polish on the art (e.g. have the stripes of the US curve around the ball to give it a more 3d look; I'm sure u can find the full speel on r/polandball or something, but i do understand that the art was probably rushed for time's sake); clearer indicator of what keys do what (+ having pause button show pause and play and making the dialogue arrow clickable), arrows pointing to where units will move, being able to cancel unit movement, and one thing that would be nice to have is the ability to take 2 low-health units and consolidate them into 1 better-health unit
also also a visual indicator of where artillery can hit (+ in the 3rd battle, the top left US truck is in the artillery hit zone, so it drains as soon as time starts)
also enjoyed the map indicator of location (reminds me of the Oregon Trail)
also also a tip as someone who made a game w/ balls just one jam before this, i would recommend adding tags like "countryball" and "polandball" to make it easier for people interested in that kind of thing to find it
Honestly, I really appreciate your comment. I honestly feel quite disappointed, and to be frank, embarrassed, about the final game. But hearing some genuine constructive feedback makes me feel a bit better.
It's kinda weird, but your comment does make me want to turn this terrible game into something decent.
So, thank you, your comment really means a lot to me. :)
Also, its late as I'm writing this, but your game looks really interesting and I'm looking forward to playing it.
Love me a strategy game. Quite the contreversial topic but i like it.
The game is quite smooth and feels alot like old strategy games.
I like that the music sounds quite war like with the trumpets.
As the musician for this project, I will take that as a compliment and thank you.
