I was one of the official judges this year, and now that the results have been made public, and I'm free to do so, here is my score and thoughts on this title:
Overall score: 8.5
Neat and beautiful little game about depression and the effects it can have not only on the person affected, but others that rely on said person (in this case literal flowers). I felt the same music track forever looping was a bit much for the first few sections, and once the game really got into the meat of things and the big 'reveal' it sort of fell flat as it seemed to rush things a bit. The one-sided conversations were a nice touch, but left me a little confused at times. In a sort of good way, though. Very nice little game.
I got assigned this for round 3 of the IGMC. First, congrats on getting to round 3!
First, you may want to ditch the installer. I had no idea where the game was installed even and went crazy trying to find it. Also the default directory it uses doesn't work on my system, the game crashed to desktop every time it tried to save. I moved it to another directory and then it worked though. May want to check into that though, as not everyone is tech savy enough to figure out how to change directories.
Overall it was an interesting game with an interesting idea. I wasn't really sure though what the point of the battles were in the game, as you only need to fight in the first area (and the final boss), and I don't level up that I can tell. Maybe could consider changing it into a system that doesn't have battles? Also the game just kinda...ends. I found myself wondering if this was ever going to resolve and it just ended without resolution. I don't know if that was due to time restrictions and more is coming or not, but I would suggest working on the ending so it at least feels like the game is a complete story in the end.
Still, congrats on getting to round 3! I think with more time you could polish this into a really good game.
Very contained and good game! I like how original this game. The combat system is good even if I took a bit to know curing is limited per day and it’s enough to make the game strategic enough. Even the dungeon crawler-y parts are good even if I wanted something in return for killing enemies. The story and the protagonist are really weird and it’s hard to see if her is doing something or she is just crazy.
The game should really needs a more varied OST, and not the same music over and over.
The graphics are nice and I am surprised to what you have done with…RPG Maker 2003, am I correct?
Really liked the game, can’t wait to see if you will make other gem like this one!
Very cute game!
The art was quite lovely and the presentation was wonderful, and I liked how streamlined the combat was. I'll admit I ended up kind of staring at the last screen going "So what happened?", though. I don't actually get the story.
Still, the atmosphere was top-notch and I liked how streamlined the gameplay loop was--there was no need for introductions, tutorials, or anything of the sort. Just boom, action, go right away. And I liked it a lot!
Well done!
Hey there Cachi Córdova and LowResolutionBoy, I got your game for judging so here are some of my thoughts. The titlescreen artwork drew me in right away (I'm a plant lover), and I knew I was about to have a feast for my eyes. The story itself is told well and leaves a lot up to the player which worked wonderfully. Basing the enemies on real insects was a brilliant move, and made me almost want to battle more enemies to see what other insects I'd recognize.
The pixel art is gorgeous and works well to support the touching story. I was left wishing there were more flowers to help so that I could spend more time in the world, but I know that with the contest deadline you could only make the game so long. Each dungeon area was unique and made every flower feel like its own thing instead of just as a goal to help me 'win' the game.
I did have a problem in one area: the fungi dungeon where Ipomoea says to avoid battles. I did my best to avoid the enemies, but they seemed to be able to move while I was in battle so I kept being cornered by them. I ended up just running from every battle and probably should have fought back to clear out a few enemies, but the enemy's grossness made me think fighting would be the wrong move. I eventually shoved my way through, but it wasn't as fun as the other areas after spending minutes being attacked over and over and over.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game. Minor things could be tweaked to improve the gameplay, but they don't detract from the game's lovely story.
Thank you so much! glad you enjoyed it!
Such charming graphic lured me to try this game!
Since the first moment I loved this sweet and delicate atmosphere! I usually don't really love fights, but here I appreciated them: funny enemies and short combats, without much pain.
Very nice the message behind the game, really really inspiring!
Particular the save system, so different from the usual ones, I liked it.
The only downside is about text messages: some white texts on white background were hard to read and sometimes the message was too long for the windows. But these are little things, nothing that can harm the beauty of this game!
Congratulations, a stunning game!
yes, we noticed the textbox error too late, maybe we'll fix it and add more content when the contest is over! there a lot of stuff in the artbook that we did not have time to implement
I love RM2K3 games so this was a must-play for me, and wow, this was good! I was tearing up at the end!! Beautiful art & great storytelling, too
Things I Loved:
- The heroine's name
- Simple battles with creative UI
- Easy to escape from those battles
- Those cute bouncy fireflies
- The ending
Great job! :)
