Very fun game! I enjoyed playing with Red Lad the most! Yella Fella I gave up since the battles were so long. The opponent could heal and defend more often than the attack card appeared to me. Anyway, nice overall experience and satisfying UI FX and BGM as well!
Red Guy is definitely the easiest to play with as he has the most Attack cards. As many people have been saying, the game really needs an overhaul in terms of rebalancing! There's a lot for me to learn from all the feedback, which I'm grateful for
The characters were pretty cool to look at the music was awesome. I really like highlight on the buttons as well to know what you have selected, very nice touch.
I didn't really know what was going on most of the time, I got a Victory which was nice but it all seemed quite random. Would be improved with a bit more hand holding for players with no brain like me :P
Favourite bit for me is definitely the music, and the cute lil knights.
My music partner will be glad to hear that! Thanks! The buttons were also really fun to work on, since I'm not very used to pixel art.
I think a lot of the problem with not knowing what to do is a lack of rules/how to play and a lack of a thoughtful UI. The randomness, as I've been told, is a bit of a problem and has to do with how I've presented the game and the balancing. Especially with hindsight, I can see how needless it is for the energy stat because you'll almost always have enough energy.
An arcade card game is a good, but risky idea. You didn’t put anything to show the card deck to the player, and the cards are of three types. On this way, it seems the game seems random and forced (like: it doesn’t make sense to heal if you can heal only 1 and you can deal 3 turn on the enemy), in fact using the red character I managed to get to the final boss only with spamming attack and powering up my attacks or full healing when needed. You should rebalance the whole game for making it better and adding real strategies for the player. How about having attack, heal, defend (setted by the main character at the beginning) and a option to power up the stats, for example? Tell me if this was a good idea or not. I liked the game, but it should be rebalanced better, otherwise it can be breaked as I did before.
Yes! Definitely need to rebalance the whole thing. It was kind of a last minute realization for me too while I was testing it with friends. And as you said, the feeling is a bit forced because of the lack of UI, something I knew I needed to do, but was scoped out for since it was so close to the deadline. (I'm not great at pixel art, and this was actually also one of the first times I've done it myself)
I think the idea of having stats is interesting and I could see how it would work. So definitely not a bad idea! I think the game would need to be a lot bigger, though, for that to work. If I made another card battler, that's something for me to keep in mind because I can see how intriguing it is.
For a next game you could add new unlockable characters and making endless fights until you lose. Every character can have something special and you hope to do the best :D It’s a great idea and I can’t wait for the sequel now :D
A turn-based game using cards. The mechanic is simple, as well as the characters. Although, it was a bit too short and I wished there were more characters to fight. I was hoping if the game would be endless and there would be a boss, but the difference is that the game just got harder and harder. Still, good job! :)
Interestingly, I was debating between making it endless or making it a finite number of enemies (or having a score versus beating the game). Maybe in the future, I'll make that into a thing, whether it's Untitled Card Battler or another project.
Hmm I can't get into the game. I get stuck on the screen with 'play' or 'quit' buttons. This is happening on both the HTML and Windows versions for me.
Very strange! I'm sorry to hear that it's not working, though. I've had a few people tell me that it's not working for them, but just as many people have it working fine (as well as my friends who tested it).
I'm assuming this is also what lzyengn was experiencing as well. I have some suspicions that it may have something to do with how I was checking keypresses in Love2D, but I can't say for sure. Again, very strange. Unfortunately, at this point in time, I don't really know how I would fix it, considering that the game doesn't necessarily break. Hopefully in the future I'll find a fix for it! (On an off-note, I recently encounter the Pancake library for Love2D and was thinking of remaking the game with OOP, so maybe the weird thing that's happening will be fixed at that time)
Yeah I do the same thing, as mentioned I tried brower and windows build already but wasn't getting anywhere.
Good news though, I tried again today and managed to get it working, even in the browser! I think I must have been pressing the wrong key to start. Becuase it is working consistently today.
Going from pressing 'space' to start on the first screen to pressing 'c' to start on the second screen was the issue it seems. And you can crash the game if you try to press 'quit' when in the browser.
Glad to hear that it worked (I just saw this after replying to your other post, whoops)! And yes the browser version does crashed when pressing quit, since it can't handle the exit event that Love2D has!
Nice little game. I liked the various animations like button shining and title screen. My biggest issue is random distribution, there seemed to be a lot of shields and almost no attack cards so I got stuck in a situation where neither me nor my opponent could do any damage to each other. Music was also nice and the concept was simple, yet had some depth to it.
I'm aware of the balancing issues and I'm looking forward to adjusting it in a future update (presumably after the voting ends since it's not absolutely game breaking, just very annoying).
I tried to play it but the game wouldn't go beyond the Play Game button, though Space key seemed to work fine on the first screen (Press Start to play)
I'm not sure exactly what's causing your problem, especially because the html distribution for Love2D isn't official (meaning I don't know exactly how it works, nor do I know what its dependencies are). If you haven't already, try using the .exe if you can!
With that said, I apologize again. Hopefully a future update will fix this.
I really like the music and I think it fits the game very well. I think with some balancing this could be really good! I love Yella Fella’s name by the way (he’s the character I chose)
Some issues I ran into:
I couldn’t find a fullscreen button on the windows build and fullscreen was blurry on the web build
The controls were kind of confusing at the beginning
There seems to be a lot of shield and heal cards compared to the attack cards
One time after a level I got 3 of the same upgrade choice (“Add 3 heals”) which I thought was a bit weird
I ran into a bit of a stalemate on the final level since I wasn’t taking any damage because I had so much shield and I wasn’t receiving enough attack cards to be able to consistently damage the boss (it took me around 10 minutes to bring it down to 6/11 hp)
thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure to look back on these posts when I find time to make a mini update later on
and the balancing issues were found pretty late while I was working on it so I couldn't fine tune it the way that I should have. I'll definitely have a lot of focus on that. as for the fullscreen for the windows build, I'll probably look into adding that later. this was my first time working with Love2D and didn't really know my way around it at first
I love card battlers and this one is good. The menu options with the selected card animations are really good. My only gripe is dang dude, early on I need some more attack cards. I'm on full turtle mode because all I get are shields and heals.
Yeah I found out with some last-minute testing that it's unintentionally super easy to stack up on shields! I'll look to make a small update in the future to combat this, but for now, it is what it is :\

Super nice game! You can get really overpowered really fast with the stackable bonus, but I enjoyed it a lot!

Try to change browser or download the game. I always do that if I encounter some kind of problems.
