Very fun. It had me wishing for more. Love the style of it all.

Run around and shoot things. The graphics here are very basic, but in a weirdly compelling way I rather like them; it's stripped back to absolute minimum. As the developer notes, it's not 64x64, so low rating for that particular thing, but I liked this game rather more than I expected to. As with all games with unlimited firepower, though, there's no reason to not just hold down the fire button the whole time, which is exactly what I did. I think there are too many controls -- left and right are expected, but "fire upwards", "jump", "fire", and "dash" are all separate keys, which is hard to manage in a twitch game like this rather than something more contemplative and thoughtful. There also seem to be some issues with the key handling; sometimes, if you're firing and running at the same time and then press "jump", the jump doesn't register, which is pretty annoying. But this is more fun than I admit I thought it would be at first!

Oh that one hit kill is infuriating.. flashbacks of Rick Dangerous where  you had to memorise the level to not get hit on each run!

Nice little game though, even with the resolution hiccup.

Developer

Hahaha xD

Shame about the resolution mishap. It's a solid platformer that is unfortunately bogged down by kinda weird controls and one-hit kill. If you fixed just one of these things, the game would be a lot more enjoyable to play!

Fair play for the upfront confession! Still liked this - it's like a platformer crossed with space invaders! Made me very happy! Shame about the resolution thing...

This is a nice platformer game with good physics, but not very friendly for people with different keyboards (like me). Overall, the game design has some minor problems like enemies insta-killing you on screen entry and respawning right next to you, but the level design was great. In the end, my keyboard made me give up,  but with changable controls, I imagine I'd be playing this for quite some time.

Developer

Thanks! I did spend quite some time getting the jump physics to feel exactly how I wanted and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I would add an option to set the controls yourself if this were a full scale game, but I'm too lazy to do that for a prototype to be totally honest xD. I know there are some bugs, I tried to fix the 'enemies insta-killing you on spawn' issue by making it so that enemies die if they spawn to close to you, but clearly that still isn't working correctly or the distance is not set high enough on that to solve the problem.

I put a good deal of thought into the level design too. I like games that give the player more than one way to progress, so I tried to include that where possible.

Thanks for playing my game and for sharing your thoughts! :D I will check out and rate your game soon.

The game does support Xbox 360 controllers if you happen to have one.

Well, it just happens that I have one right next to me, so I went back and replayed it. After 49 deaths, I can say that though the insta-shoot enemy view enters are still a bit annoying, it is a fun game. The enemy AI is good, game feel is nice and the graphics are clear and understandable. It's a shame that it isn't really 64x64, but still a great game regardless

Does have a good feel. Shame about the resolution miscue. You have a fun little base game on your hands though.

Cool platformer, with the gameplay in order. I have one question, is the resolution really 64x64 pixels? Considering the scale of the camera, I don't think it is. While I wait for your answer I will rate the rez with 1. Anyway it's a nice game. Great work

PS: If you have the time play my game, https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2018/rate/293637 it's nothing special.

Cheers

Thanks! As to the resolution you are absolutely correct. xD I set my resolution to 64x64, but then I went and set the zoom on the camera really far out without thinking about what that meant, so yeah I'm dumb. Tried changing the zoom to 1x scale but it turns out this game actually doesn't really work at 64x64 haha. Oh well, I guess that disqualifies me from the jam, I'll update my description with a confession.

Thanks for trying the game, I will check out your game!

Ahaha I see! Far from that, you won't disqualified, it's just you are gonna be rated 1 on the rez, the rest of points can still be scored the same way as the others. Nevertheless, it's a nice game, well done once again.

Nice platform game, challenging in a good way. Any reason for not adding ambient music?

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I spent most of the jam trying to come up with an original idea, and ended up making this in the last few days. Might add some music in an update.
