Really nice game. While it is simple enough to figure out without any sort of instructions, I did have to die a couple times before I figured out the rules. Otherwise, I could definitely loose an hour or so to playing this game.

Developer

Thank you! What you say it's true. If it was polished and add more stuff to do, I think that anyone would be addicted to it.

Submitted(+1)

I like the way everything paused and slid down when you pushed a block, it gave the game an old console/arcade feel.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing and reviewing it!

It's interesting that I wasn't by any means, trying to make the game have that feel (retro feel I mean). It only felt better to do it that way.

Submitted(+1)

Super simple but actually really addicting and fun. The jump felt a little awkward (no slow curve at the top) but it kind of adds to the retro/nostalgic charm. Awesome job :)

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Some of the comments state that the jump is a bit weird. I was actually making other game for the jam, but I reached a point when I realized I wouldn't be able to do it on time, so I stopped it. Than I asked myself, "Am I gonna give up or am I gonna make something in these six hours." and then I came up with this. I'm gonna try to fix "Super Jump" bug and then I'm gonna try to make the jump a little bit more fluid without losing the retro/nostalgic feel.

So cute. It's difficult for me over 30 lv. My hiscore is 44 XD

Developer

Thank's for playing!

Ahaha, it's true, my highscore is about 50, so yours is not too bad. Thanks again for playing.

The rules on when the blocks would go down seemed a littly wonky at times, and it doesn't really make sense that landing on the top of a falling block kills you (though I understand where it comes from code-wise), but fun otherwise. The simple graphics are very clean-looking and it has a nice difficulty ramp. I enjoyed it overall. Thanks for sharing!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the review!

You speak the truth. The game is indeed a little buggy, sometimes when the blocks are on the ground they do this weird thing where they go a little bit up. I know why this one happens, so it will be easy to fix, the "Super Jump" is another story, because it doesn't always happen and it never happened to me.

About the killing part, the game is a bit hardcore, what happens is that if you touch a block that is not placed on the ground or on another block, you will die, and this fact is not gonna change, it's the mechanic I come up with to make it harder, in this case very hard.

Once again, thanks, I hope you play this or any other game I create in the future.

Submitted(+1)

Ah, okay... In that case, all I think it could use is maybe a change of color between when the block is falling, and when the block has landed. Like falling magma that cools off.

Developer

I will think about, it's actually a cool idea. Although I don't want to change much, because the compo is kinda over, so I don't want to change much from the original. But thanks, it's a nice idea.

When the box is falling and you collide with it from the side, it kills you. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but for me it ended quite a few runs. Overall it has nice controls, and a vierd and unique idea. It could certainly be made into a full game.

Developer

Thanks for the review and for playing it!

The mechanic that I come up with kills you unless the block is already placed on the ground, of course the game has a few bugs that need and will be fixed.

Someone else also suggested that it could be turned into a fuil game. I must be honest, for the last jam I made QLOW and I had ideas to turn it into a full game, but then I was caught by other stuff so I ended up not doing it. This time I don't even have intentions to turn it into a full game, at least, not for now. So if you or anyone else think they can make something good out of it, feel free to take idea and to ask me anything.

Again, thanks.

Pretty entertaining. It's very 2600!

I was a little stumped early on, but got sucked in after a few tries. "One more try" became a few dozen more tries.

It would be neat to see where this could go with more time.

Developer

Thanks for your review, I like it very much ahah!

I'm happy almost, if not, everybody had a nice moment playing it. It would be interesting to see a full scale game out of this, but like I said in other comments before, right now, for me, it's not the right moment to do it, so feel free to take the idea and make something.

Once again, thanks.

Nice little game.  I wasn't sure of my objective at first, but I eventually figured it out.  Iron out a couple little mechanical glitches, and it would be nicer to play. (When jumping onto a block, it leaves a space between the character and the block.  Also, sometimes after pushing the block down, the game makes you jump.)  I think my high score was 12, but I didn't play it too long.  Cheers!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the review!

The part where it leaves a space between the player and the block happens because of the animation, it's gonna be fixed on the next update.

The "Super Jump" bug is something that will take a while to fix, because it doesn't happen all the time, in a matter of facts, it never happened to me, at least not in the current version. But I will do my best to fix it soon, I hope you played.

I hope you give it a try again later on.

Once again, thanks for playing!

Nice entry, and has a really nostalgic feeling to it. With only 6 hours to create this game, I'm curious if you will spend more time fleshing it out post-jam?

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I usually don't mess up with the projects after the jams, but feel free to grab the idea and make it a bigger game.

Submitted(+1)

Very cool idea! Would be interesting to see it developed further. Give mine a try if you get a chance! You'll have to use your imagination because the resolution is only 3x3 https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2018/rate/293545

Developer

Thanks! I most certainly will give yours a try.

Submitted(+1)

I dig this!   Also nice to see a Java entry.  The game design is pretty clever, there seems to be incentive to push down more blocks faster instead of waiting for them to stack up.  There seems to be a jumping bug (?) - sometimes when I push down a red block, I get launched (sometimes into another block, can be frustrating).  I like the audio, very 80s arcade sound.

Developer(+1)

First of all, thank's for playing and for the review.

I see you connected with the game. You are correct, instead of waiting you gotta push them down faster, that way you won't be stuck.

About the bug, I've seen many people with this problem, I hope to fix it tomorrow, since today I don't much time left to do it.

Once again, thank's for the playing it.

Submitted(+2)

I found if you hold the down arrow while landing it prevents the launching bug. Makes it a lot easier.

Submitted(+1)

It's super lovely. The audio and the little bit "hard" moving hero remember me my Atari2600 when I was a kid.

Developer

Thank's for playing!

this is the best game i hear every time!

Developer

Thank's for playing it and thank's for the review.

Nice entry !
The gameplay is very simple and effective. I like this kind of action-puzzle games, and the fact that the player is not just pushing single blocks but entire lines. The addition of different kinds of block is good and allows for more strategy.

Great job ! (my high score is 58, so far).

Developer(+1)

Thank's for the review. Wait a second, 58 is more than I did, did you just beat me on my own game? ahahah Well done.

It's a phantasy console of mine. It's not finished yet, it has some bugs that need to be fixed, but it was enough to create this game in its current state. Right now it's using a palette of 24 colors (16 are pico8) the rest are colors  of my choice, note that, in the final version I will probably use all colors of my choice. The rest of the console is pretty much like Pico 8, the difference is that its mine and stuff on the core works differently. In the future I intend to create a Phantasy Console just for LowRezJam and one with less limitations like PixelVision 8, but this year I've been really busy, well at least Singulair 64 is gonna be finished or almost finished. Thanks for the review.

Developer(+1)

Oh and I still have to port it to android, that's gonna take a few days.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting game! I like the style and am impressed this has been created with a fantasy console you have made! Like others I noticed a few bugs - randomly killed by blocks sometimes. I also noticed a weird thing where I would jump again after moving the grid down without touching any keys. Would be intrigued to see if you take this further - reminds me of a classic arcade style mobile game.

Developer

Thank's for the review, much appreciated. It's weird, I've noticed the "Super Jump" bug, but I haven't been killed randomly by blocks. Perhaps I'm too cautious playing it. Let's see you, you can only jump to the block, if it's on the ground, if it is still coming down, and you touch it, you die.

I'm gonna try to fix the bugs later, I'm still playing lots of entries and rating them. Again, thank's for playing the game and reviewing it.

Good game, I did 30. Sometimes the character gives a weird super jump.

Developer

Thanks for playing. When you get the hang of it, you can score more than 40 easily. The super jump is bug, I'm gonna look into it later. Thanks again.

The first thing that stood out to me in this game was the seizure inducing background; thankfully I'm not prone to them. The idea behind the game play is a good one; although it took me a couple tries to figure out what you were meant to do. I'm not sure the execution was spot on. It seems like just touching the side of the falling squares kills you, which i'm not sure is intended or not. Also, there was a moment where I was way above the falling block and it counted as being crushed by it when I didn't even make contact with it.

The jumping mechanics felt a bit off, very fast and you fall about the same speed you jump.

Overall, it's a nice game, but I think it needed a few tweeks that would have made it a lot better.

Developer

Thanks for the playing and for the review.

1º - If a block is not yet placed on the ground and you touch it, you will die.

2º - I will change the background on the next update.

3º - I'm gonna take a look at the jumping mechanics, but I don't really want to be changing it much because the jam is over and I want the game to be evaluated for what it was when the competition ended.

Again, thank's for the review, this is the best one so far.

Submitted(+1)

Good game, I tried it a couple of time and my best try was level 4 with a score of 33. I would like to try the game with a calmer or static background to see if I could concentrate more on the boxes. I was a lof of fun to play.

Developer

Thank's for playing. The background will be fixed on the next update. Hope you try it again. Thanks

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Not bad, it's a cool highscore game with evoluting gameplay. But you should really change the background.

Developer

Thanks for playing. Is the background to fast? Or is it just a bad background? aahah

Submitted(+1)

The colors hurt my eyes, man, haha. I'm pretty sure I won't be the only one to say that.

Developer (1 edit)

I see, perhaps if I slow down or stop the animation, it won't affect anymore ahah I'll find a solution on the next update. Thanks for the review!
