This is amazingly detailed sea battle game, with a lot of different co-existing mechanics involved. It also feels very NES-like (except for using a mouse). There is a lot to explore and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface after playing it for some time now. Well done! :)
Thank you! We wanted the game to feel adventurous, and like there is always more to discover, so It makes me happy to hear that you felt there was a lot to explore! Thanks for playing!
A quite enjoyable adventure with plenty of places to explore and diverse gameplay. Initially, I got lost at sea until I realized I had a map in the pause menu. I haven’t completed the game yet, but there’s a sense of mystery in these islands that needs to be unraveled. Great job!
Thank you for playing! The pause menu seem to have eluded a few people, but to be fair the only place I mention it is in the game's description. I'm glad you enjoyed exploring our little world!
What a fun adventure haha. I followed the clues and made it to the end and it was very satisfying. So many cool little gameplay elements and bits of polish and juice. The music was chill and fit theme and setting, and the art is very cute.
Wasn't sure if I missed something in the starting island, I couldn't do anything with the huts, but I still got everything I needed for the you know what to appear.
Awesome game, super fun.
Thanks for playing! To my knowledge, you might be the first to get to the end, nice job!
The starting island had some plans, but I never got around to them during the jam, so you didn't miss anything.
Thanks again for playing :)
FYI everyone! Press the ESC key to open your inventory. You can only use the mouse on the inventory screen, no keyboard navigation.
Very engaging game play loops. I spent much more time than I planned to playing it.
Like others, I was stymied by a few mechanics. However, the controls are limited so after a few minutes of failures I figured out the battle and fishing mechanics. This reminded me of renting NES games and having to figure the game out without the manual. I think this is a fun experience when the interface (i.e. input controls and mechanics) are simple.
I found half a medallion but at some point it disappeared out of my inventory. I did go to a several islands with special features on them (no spoilers) but nothing obviously happened that would indicate that the half-medallion was used.
I had collected 300 gold but, back on the starting island, I could never interact with any of the huts. Nothing happens when pressing the space key. Also, I would also suggest including crosshairs in walk-around mode also so it is clear where you are aiming.
Good fun. I've definitely revisit this game later.
Thanks for playing!
Yeah, I wish I had time to implement more tutorial stuff, unfortunately the game jam timeline got the best of me. I'm hoping to improve on a lot of that post jam.
The half medallion disappearing is kinda strange, there is a way to expend it, but you most likely would have noticed doing it, so I'm inclined to think that it vanished due to a bug. I'll definitely look into it!
I intended to add more to the home island, but again time got the better of me, so currently none of the huts have any functionality. There is however merchants on the sea that will give you a chance to spend some of that hard earned gold on upgrades :)
I think the idea of adding a crosshair is an excellent idea, I also have some ideas for smoothing some of the rougher and more confusing mechanics in the future.
Thanks again for playing, and giving such a great breakdown of your experience, it will definitely help us improve the gameplay post jam!
I was really impressed by this- the core loop was fun and relaxing, I found myself just idly playing for a while. I really liked the fishing / salvage minigame. It worked great. I was also really impressed when I realized you could walk on the shore- though I tried interacting with some huts to no avail. Overall, great work!
Thank you! I'm really happy with the way the salvage game turned out :)
Yeah the huts were a last minute addition, they were gonna be a tutorial of sort, but time caught up with me. Other Island do have things to interact with though, if you ever feel like giving it another go.
Either way, thank you for playing!
What a spectacular game! I have also created a piracy-themed game, but it is nowhere near The Mariner regarding its content and polish. It is amazing how deeply you designed this game. There are lots of interactions, and each part of the game feels like a minigame. Well done!
Thank you! The game stems from an idea I had years ago, so I've thought about it a lot haha. In hindsight it was an extremely hard game to fit into a game jam development window, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Thank you for playing!
Very nice. The loop of switching between sea fairing and fishing was addictive I spent quite some time doing that. Though I couldn't figure out the point of fishing/collecting collecting the items (other than cannonballs). And, I think all chests were empty on one island I found to be dockable. There is definitely some potential in expanding post-jam.
Glad you enjoyed! I'll have to look into the empty chest thing, that's a bug I hadn't come across yet. There actually is endgame islands to be found, but it's kinda convoluted, and I didn't do a great job teaching the player what to do... Thank you very much for playing!
Really cool game! I didn't completely understand all the mechanics, like fishing for example, and the combat was a little hard to get the hang of, but the art, polish, and mechanics all succeeded at really making me feel like I'm part of this world, and immerse myself in this little game. Great work!
Thank you! I'm glad you felt immersed! We added so many systems to this game that I think a couple things, like the combat, could have done with a little more development time. But I suppose that's just how game jams go. Thanks for playing :)
