Themes
Peaceful - We didn't want to make a game with combat, so we riffed on Crazy Taxi / Simpson Road Rage. Hitting people docks points (unless you activate Evil Mode...)
The Main Mission is a Sidequest: The whole loop of the game is essentially the same thing that happens when you hit R3 in a taxi in GTA III.
Attachments after attachments: This is the big one for us- all upgrades are physically modeled on the player and they can be loaded down with a bunch of them simultaneously.

Lessons
64x64 resolution for a 3D game lets you get away with pretty basic models while still having it look pretty good. Most of the other traffic in the game is boxes on wheels with Sprite3D windows but at this resolution we can get away with it. I like having these limitations, it makes things like UI much easier to design in my opinion. Text on the other hand is brutal to work with at 64x64.
