Hey all! I've yet to title my game, but here's a low-quality GIF of my current progress. I had a hard lesson today... the platform I use, Construct 2, is usually pretty stable... but every now and again crashes in a way that PERMANENTLY corrupts both the project file and auto-backup. I lost 4-6 hours of work today. I was able to redo that work in about 1-2 hours, but ugh, not fun. Moral of the story: Backup often! Fortunately I had been doing nightly backups, but now I've increased that frequency.

Yikes, never knew Construct was that bad. Either way, you've got some lovely sense of weight and momentum to the moment and the animations are endearingly chunky (you can almost hear the attack slam even without any sound); it's an excellent start!

Submitted

Thank you! :)  Construct 2 is actually pretty great, but the devs have moved onto Construct 3.  All "2" support is ending in a month or two. "3" is subscription only, and I'm cheap so my plan is to use my "2" license as long as possible. I guess this is a different  price I'll pay, lol.

Wow... that sounds too bad.

Maybe I should invite you to the Godot Gang in two months...

Submitted(+1)

Oof. Yeah, I'd second the 'move to Godot' call on that one. It's the Blender of game engines, or at least it aspires to be.

HostSubmitted (1 edit)

My my... I'm sorry to hear that. I have fortunately never had such experience outside Minecraft

Also hey, I see you are not using your usual characters; looking forward to see what you are going to make!

P.S.: What recording software do you use?

Submitted(+1)

Nope! Using a different set of characters and setting that I've been saving for awhile now! There's a whole bunch of them, but this game will focus on "June," with a few other cameos. I'd been wanting to make a game with this setting for awhile, and this jam was the perfect excuse! In a way, it's kind of a test to see how difficult it would be to make a bigger project out of this. This submission will be a sort of "slice" of what a bigger game could be.

As for recording, I'm actually just using the built-in Windows game bar (Windows Key + G) to record. It makes a decent MP4 file. From there, I export a GIF from Photoshop CS6. It came out pretty ratty this time, but it was late and I was tired so I just rolled with it.

Losing work always sucks. I (eventually) learned to save early and save often with Flash and GZDoom Builder, which at the time were very unstable and dumped a lot of work. You may want to look into source control (usually Git but there are others) if you haven't already.

How long have you been working on this game? It looks pretty polished and playable already!

I'm definitely backing up often! What's really insidious about this engine bug is that it corrupts both the project and auto-back files together, destroying everything. I have to manually backup my work to insure it's safe. This doesn't happen very often, but when it does it really stinks.

Thanks! I got a little head start on the character artwork when I noticed that the rules allowed pre-made art, free art, etc. Since I make all my own art, that can bog me down a lot, so I figured it was fair to start building that early if pre-made assets were allowed. I started that about a week before the official "launch." I still have a ton more to make though. DX

The game build itself, I've only worked on it for a few days. Last May I started doing "Weekly Game Jam" submissions (17 under my belt now) and participated in "Devtober 2019" in the fall. Jamming through so many games has definitely built up my speed when it comes to scripting out a basic game. Even yesterday, when I lost the 4-6 hours of work, rebuilding it took less than 2.  I find the more I make, the faster it goes. But I'm sure some game-breaking bug will come to haunt me in the finals hours of the Jam, it always does. ;-;

Here's a couple of screens of today's progress! Added a basic dialogue/text system for both auto-play elements and interactable objects.

One more screen! Featuring a new enemy type, and June's newest attack, the Cherry Cannon. It's strong but slow, and drains glamour(mana), so should be used sparingly.

Looks nice! So this is made with Construct 2?  I stopped using engines when I learned how to program in pure Javascript and then learned how to use a rendering framework. Using an engine is without a doubt faster, but I somehow got alienated by most engines I could find. I prefer mostly code oriented engines if anything. Also your backup problems are unfortunate, stay safe and make sure to not lose anything vital with this project, it looks great!

Submitted

Thanks! Yes, this is made in Construct 2. Despite my crash issues, I'm a big fan of it. An acquaintance  of mine who works as a full-time game dev recommended it to me when I needed software for a class I was running at the time. I used to code, but drifted towards enjoying art and design more after high school. Construct 2 is great because it's easy to use but still follows the same logic patterns as coding, more or less. So it scratches that itch for me, without getting too frustrating.

I may look into a deeper engine or system if I ever go beyond doing this as a hobby, but for now Construct 2 it is. Heck, maybe I'll cave and pay for a Construct 3 rental license eventually. I just hate that business model, ugh.

As for backups, no worries there, I'm backing up obsessively at this point. It's a rare thing, but man does it stink when it happens.

Keeping the update stream going! Started working on the second level, "the city." Also need to actually build the functions to move between levels, but hey, that's a small thing... right? right?

Thanks! :)

welcome

Also do you use version control? It would solve your backup problem. I use github/ github desktop app. It's a life saver as I recently made game breaking changes and can revert pretty easily.

Submitted

I don't currently, but that sounds pretty useful! I'll have to look into that.

I really need to title this thing soon... in the meantime, here's a glimpse of the 3rd level and a new enemy!

Submitted

I really like this sequence for some reason. It reminds me of NJTRAIN and that episode of Archer.

Are the colored squares going to be part of the final game or are those a debugging thing?

Submitted

Thanks! Yes, those colored squares will only be visible in test builds. This level is using a slightly difference camera system, so I've been tracking that.

Submitted

Gotta love train sequences. Looking good!

Thank you! :)

Made some good progress today! Going for another big push tomorrow. At this point, I need to do the final dialogue and the "gameplay" will be finished. I still need to finish and assemble the story art cards, game over screens (3 possible bad ends), title, instruction screen, all that great stuff that always waits until the end. And SFX. Need those. Hope to go back and add some polish and balance too.

Here are two short GIFs teasing the miniboss:

And the final stage:

Don't want to show too much and spoil it all! (Just realized all the debug blocks are still in there, lol. Gotta take those out too.)

Looking fantastic!

Thank you! :)

It all looks so cool!!!

Submitted

Thank you! It's actually coming together, despite all odds, haha. The core game is finished, just building out intro and ending screens, and some other miscellaneous items. Maybe add a little polish if I end up with any extra time!

Submitted(+1)

I'm looking forward to this it looks really interesting!

Submitted

Thanks! I hope you enjoy it when it's ready!

Time to officially void the title of this post! It has a name... "A Change of Heart - A Magical Girl Adventure". Here's the titlescreen without UI in place:

I keep seeing all these screenshots and I'm itching to play it!

TFW: you wanna post the game's music, but you also just want to wait until people play it.

Submitted

I know what you mean! I want to keep posting things to keep the momentum going, but I also don't want to give away ever detail, haha.
