Matthew September - music and gun sfx. Eden Meridia (me) - everything else

Software used
Godot, Krita, Audacity, FLStudio

Use of the limitation
"Death affects more than the player" doesn't specify whose death. In Protect Asylum, death doesn't affect the player at all, and the player can't die. How many of the NPCs you kill will determine which ending you get.

Cookies eaten
Let's see... 2 nights... 2 cups of hot cocoa... 2 cookies with each cup of hot cocoa... 2*2 = 4!!!

I loved the game! Was quite addicting but got a bit repetitive eventually. I'm actually in LOVE witht the idea and "story", congrats!! :D

I'm glad to know you like the story.

Assuming you don't already know,  I think you'd be happy to hear that there is a second ending ;D

I'm happy to hear I got the atmosphere right.

I'm very confused, I have so many questions. Why can the enemies seemingly shoot further than me? Why am I randomly taking damage out of nowhere? Why... am I taking damage at all and why are there health pickups, I thought the player couldn't die?

Also took me a while to figure out what the room numbers meant (which may have had to do with the fact that I skipped the intro by accident, because pressing enter didn't work at first, though I suspect that might be a web player issue). Also, the movement speed is definitely too slow :/

It's definitely the kind of game that benefits heavily from more time, some sparkles here, some tuning there, and it could be fun. Which I'm sure you wanted to add but ran out of time because everything takes 50 times longer than you'd expect :)

Developer

Thank you for the criticism. I'll implement fixes once the jam is over.

The thing about taking damage even though you can't die - that's where the Jam's theme of 'deception' comes in. Ideally, I would never have told the player that they can't die. I just did that as part of submission.

This is what was meant to happen:

You are made to believe that the "armed cannibal gangsters" can kill you. Each time you're shot, you turn red. When you pick up a health, you turn green. "So surely I take damage and can die?"

Knowing that you can't die, you've  realised that something is wrong. ie Somebody deceived you into believing that these cannibals can hurt you. If you've been deceived about that, what else have you been deceived about?

Ohhhhhhhh. Yea, telling people that they can't die was probably not ideal then :D Then again, chances are people would just assume it's a bug when they figure it out. Hm. Tough crowd you got there. That certainly makes the concept a lot more interesting, though!

I was walking down the hallway and taking damage but not sure where from so I picked a direction and walked that way for a long time only to reach the end and find out that the enemies had spawned behind me and were shooting me from the other direction entirely. And since it doesn't look like they can miss / you can't see the bullets, I had to take a lot more shots on the way back.
I'm not sure if you can die or if that just lowers your score though. There were hearts and I assume they were healing me, but I'm not sure.

I would have added a sprint, made it so enemies couldn't attack from offscreen, and added a graphic for bullets. I think this has  potential as a bullet hell or, if you were going for slower action, a sort of top down cover based shooter.

I like the sprite for the doors and I liked the animation on the big opening door at the end of the level.

Thank you for playing and for the criticism. Will add these fixes after the jam.

I actually have been thinking about this game all morning.

The "feel" of the setting came through really well and I'm imagining fighting through the halls with some stealth mechanics and/or a cover system.

Within the time limit I think this was really good. And I think that some small tweaks on top of it could really make it shine.

I'm happy to hear that it left an impression! Though I don't think I'll be implementing a cover system for THIS game, your earlier comment introduced me to a new concept - "bullet hell"!

I'll be implementing this, along with a cover system, in a game I've had in mind for a while now. Thanks for your feedback.
